CONNECTING THE VANISHING FLORA, FAUNA AND ITS RELATION TO THE INDIAN REMOVAL POLICY AS SEEN IN COOPER’S THE LEATHERSTOCKING TALES Ceisy Nita Wuntu [email protected] English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Manado State University, Indonesia Abstract: This study aims at connecting the vanishing flora, fauna and its Relation to the Indian removal policy in Cooper’s The Leatherstocking Tales. This research applies an American Studies’ interdisciplinary principle supplemented by the myth and symbol theory proposed by Henry Nash Smith. Smith claimed the importance of imaginative works in revealing American culture. He declared that the historical, anthropological and cultural, sociological, and ecological data as covered in this research can be equipped by data from imaginative works. Hence, in this research, those data are presented integratedly in their context of past and present. In this research, in order to highlight environmental matters in Cooper’s The Leatherstocking Tales, the analysis covers the data above that are integrated with the data revealed in The Leatherstocking Tales as a whole by employing the concept of ecocriticism. The spirit of the immigrants to have a better life in the new world, stimulated by its rich, lush and beautiful circumstances, in fact, is not an aim of a sustainable life. The desire to improve their life is not enough without using and treating its environment wisely as well as facing it with the environmental conservation paradigm. The spirit of doing the exploitation is a consequence of western humanism value. The reason of coming to America to avoid the population density as well as the competition of life cannot be attained when the immigrants experience the same population density and harsh competition as in their old world and when the beautiful nature disappears, the forests become cities, the tranquility becomes noisy and crowded, and the people experience the uncomfortable life that many kinds of conflict can follow. -

Brown; historian Obed Macy; and journalist J. Ross Browne, among others. In my Introduction, I argue that these whaling narratives helped to further develop and perpetuate an already existing fantasy of masculine physical labor which imagines the United States’ working class men to be ideal, heroic Americans. This fantasy was so compelling and palpable that, surprisingly enough, the New England whalemen could be persistently claimed as characteristically and emblematically American, even though they worked on hierarchically-stratified floating factories, were frequently denied their Constitutional rights by maritime law, and hardly ever spent any time on American soil. -

Mencken and Van Wyck Brooks vociferously expounded a deep and profound disenchantment with American art and culture. At a time when American popular entertainments were expanding exponentially, and at a time when European high modernism was in full flower, American culture appeared to these critics to be at best a quagmire of philistinism and at worst an oxymoron. Today there is still general agreement that American arts “came of age” or “arrived” in the 1920s, thanks in part to this flogging criticism, but also because of the powerful influence of European modernism. Yet, this assessment was not, at the time, unanimous, and its conclusions should not, I argue, be taken as foregone. In this dissertation, I present crucial case studies of Constance Rourke (1885-1941) and Gilbert Seldes (1893-1970), two astute but understudied cultural critics who saw the same popular culture denigrated by Brooks or Mencken as vibrant evidence of exactly the modern American culture they were seeking. In their writings of the 1920s and 1930s, Rourke and Seldes argued that our “lively arts” (Seldes’ formulation) of performance—vaudeville, minstrelsy, burlesque, jazz, radio, and film—contained both the roots of our own unique culture as well as the seeds of a burgeoning modernism. -

van wyck brooks and the progressive frame of mind peter w. dowel I It has long been recognized that Van Wyck Brooks's America's Coming-of-Age (1915) and its companion piece Letters and Leadership (1918) captured the insurgent mood of a young generation of intellec tuals who themselves came of age with an outburst of critical and artistic activity in the years just prior to America's entry into World War I.1 To those of his contemporaries espousing a literature in touch with the wellsprings of modern American life, Brooks gave, as one of them put it, "an afflatus inchoate, vague, sentimental," but one that brought vital energy and creative focus to their cause.2 Although his demand for a truly national literature growing out of a healthy national culture was hardly new, harking back to Emerson and Whitman among others, Brooks's vigorous restatement of this theme expressed particularly the concerns of the present moment: a belief in self-expression as an ideal of personal growth and the basis for a flourishing artistic tradition; a sense of social responsibility, often tinged by some form of political radicalism; an emphasis on freedom, experiment and creativity in all phases of the national life, and especially a youthful rejection of all that smacked of the "old America." The diverse ideas and interests of Randolph Bourne, Floyd Dell, Max Eastman, Waldo Frank, Walter Lippmann, John Reed, Paul Rosenfeld and Harold Stearns, to name but a few, indelibly stamped what Brooks called "the newness." Having come into their own at the high-water mark of the Progressive era, these young men felt that the current reform agitation had fallen far short of creating a new social and cultural order. -
Devoto's West
Introduction During the summer of 1946, Bernard DeVoto toured the American West by automobile. He had grown up in the West; and after two decades of writing, he had established himself as an expert on the re- gion. Having just completed two book-length manuscripts on the West, one a novel and the other an award-winning history of the moun- tain fur trade, DeVoto set out to see both the national parks and the northwest passage of Lewis and Clark in preparation for a book on that storied expedition.1 He planned to support the more-than-thirteen- thousand-mile journey by writing articles on his venture for popular magazines, but by the end of the second month he had determined to enlist his writing against those westerners desirous of ruinously exploit- ing the region’s extensive public lands. In the words of writer Wallace Stegner, his friend and a fellow westerner, “DeVoto went West in 1946 a historian and tourist. He came back an embattled conservationist.”2 He began his crusade against western eVorts to privatize the public domain with a pair of long essays in the December 1946 and January 1947 issues of Harper’s Magazine. During the nine years until his death in November 1955, he published nearly three dozen essays advocating the importance of federal control over, as well as the conservation of, the nation’s public lands. Most of these essays appeared in his monthly Harper’s column, The Easy Chair; the others were longer articles in Harper’s and in a variety of popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s. -
