This change was instigated as a result of consultation with Aberdeen Airport, and reflects their Client: agreement to an increase in tower height to 55m. Charles Simmers Four viewpoints have been used to show the visual impact, and it can be seen that there has been little change to the Mains of Bogfechel Significance of visual effects. The nearest viewpoint at By Whiterashes Whiterashes has an increase in impact magnitude, Aberdeenshire AB21 0QU increasing Significance to Medium/High. The impact Significance at middle and long distance views is unchanged. Telephone 01651 882303 The photomontages and the wireframe images also show the location of the existing derelict turbine in the event of a future replacement being installed Project design: Richard Gauld Tower dimensions are now 55m and the blade radius is 24m, BSc (Hons) IEng MInstMC Dip.DesInn Dip.GeoSci giving a maximum turbine height of 79m. • THE PINNING STONES Culture and Community in Aberdeenshire
THE PINNING STONES Culture and community in Aberdeenshire When traditional rubble stone masonry walls were originally constructed it was common practice to use a variety of small stones, called pinnings, to make the larger stones secure in the wall. This gave rubble walls distinctively varied appearances across the country depend- ing upon what local practices and materials were used. Settlement Summary: Udny Station Population: 278 Udny Station - Open Spaces Audited Public Parks and Gardens Schools/Institutions Observations (of Community 7.2% Amenity Areas Council) 14.6% Play Space • Improved play area for Sports Areas 8.1% community centre; would 25.5% benefit from facilities for older Green Corridors/Riparian children and the elderly. Routes 6.6% Semi Natural Areas • Improved amenity planting at Allotments shrub beds in Cherry Row. 9.0% Churchyards, Cemeteries Green Network Links Other Functional Greenspace The principle areas of open space Civic Space in Udny Station adjoin the surrounding countryside, and a number of the remainder appear to have a degree of interconnection. In considering any new development for the village, it will be important to protect existing access to adjacent habitats. For example, consideration might be given to extending the existing habitat/woodland strip adjoining the community centre play area, to link with the Formartine and Buchan Way to the north. Open Space Requirements Although there are positives from having greenspace on the perimeter of the village, the disadvantage is that Udny Station lacks a central focus, and would benefit from creation of a greater sense of place. With further development to the east, the community centre would occupy a more central location, underlining the need to enhance facilities in the associated greenspace. This area is managed by the Udny Station Conservation and Amenity group, with the help of grant funding from the Council and Formartine Partnership. Udny Station is estimated as having about 44% open space, a reasonable amount for a village of this size.

The settlement is characterised by the woodland setting of Balmedie House and the long sand beaches of Balmedie Country Park. Balmedie is a key settlement in both the Energetica area and the Aberdeen to Peterhead strategic growth area (SGA). As such, Balmedie will play an important role in delivering strategic housing and employment allowances. In line with the vision of Energetica, it is expected that new development in Balmedie will contribute to transforming the area into a high quality lifestyle, leisure and global business location. Balmedie is expected to become an increasingly attractive location for development as the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route reaches completion and decreases commuting times to Aberdeen. It is important that the individual character of the village is retained in the face of increased demand. The village currently has a range of services and facilities, which should be sustained during the period of this plan. In addition, the plan will seek to improve community facilities, including new health care provision.
