THE PINNING STONES Culture and community in Aberdeenshire When traditional rubble stone masonry walls were originally constructed it was common practice to use a variety of small stones, called pinnings, to make the larger stones secure in the wall. This gave rubble walls distinctively varied appearances across the country depend- ing upon what local practices and materials were used. • Udny Station
Settlement Summary: Udny Station Population: 278 Udny Station - Open Spaces Audited Public Parks and Gardens Schools/Institutions Observations (of Community 7.2% Amenity Areas Council) 14.6% Play Space • Improved play area for Sports Areas 8.1% community centre; would 25.5% benefit from facilities for older Green Corridors/Riparian children and the elderly. Routes 6.6% Semi Natural Areas • Improved amenity planting at Allotments shrub beds in Cherry Row. 9.0% Churchyards, Cemeteries Green Network Links Other Functional Greenspace The principle areas of open space Civic Space in Udny Station adjoin the surrounding countryside, and a number of the remainder appear to have a degree of interconnection. In considering any new development for the village, it will be important to protect existing access to adjacent habitats. For example, consideration might be given to extending the existing habitat/woodland strip adjoining the community centre play area, to link with the Formartine and Buchan Way to the north. Open Space Requirements Although there are positives from having greenspace on the perimeter of the village, the disadvantage is that Udny Station lacks a central focus, and would benefit from creation of a greater sense of place. With further development to the east, the community centre would occupy a more central location, underlining the need to enhance facilities in the associated greenspace. This area is managed by the Udny Station Conservation and Amenity group, with the help of grant funding from the Council and Formartine Partnership. Udny Station is estimated as having about 44% open space, a reasonable amount for a village of this size.
