COMMUNIQUÉ NORTHWOOD WOMAN’S CLUB NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2019

Jan’s Journal

Embrace the Future: Vision 20/20

Jan Folmar President

Thank you all for our 239 members and guests who attended our "Kick Off Luncheon" on August 22, 2019 at our new venue: Venue Forty/50. A big thank you to our New Member class who lifted, loaded and delivered the school supplies so generously donated by NWC members. The recipient schools were delighted and overwhelmed. Another big thank you for our Program chairmen and Hospitality committee who rose to the occasion and made such a great effort to accommodate everyone. It all worked out beautifully!

We have made great strides with our new volunteer hour tracking app: Track It Forward. We have 3,350 hours recorded as of midnight August 31, 2019, (beginning June 1, 2019) with 64 volunteers who have already met or exceeded their 15 hour annual requirement plus 106 volunteers who have already logged from 1 hour up to 14.5 hours and we haven’t started the year yet! Many log their own hours (hours must be approved by the chairman) and others have had the project chairman log the hours for them as a group. You can monitor your status when you log into your account.

You should have received an invitation sometime at the end of August with instructions on how to sign up for Track It Forward from Deneice Scott. Please download the app from your device, sign in with your email and change your password. Note that many more features are available on your computer than your phone so start there. If you are having difficulties, call Deneice Scott at 214-277-3719.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting at Northwood Club on September 26, 2019. We have an exciting speaker that you will all want to hear: Annette Becker, Director of The Fashion Institute UTD. Jan NWC’s at Bat and the Bases are Loaded! BYLAWS Amy Brady, Director

Bylaws Are Important !

Bylaws are an integral part of what makes Northwood Woman’s Club run smoothly.

Bylaws are important because they help to maintain consistency in the running of an organization. Bylaws communicate organizational rules so that internal disputes and conflicts can be avoided. Bylaws also educate incoming directors and officers so meetings and elections of the group run smoothly.

NWC works each year to review the club’s bylaws and standing rules to determine if any bylaws/standing rules need to be changed/added/deleted.

All Northwood members are permitted to request changes or additions to the Bylaws and/or Standing Rules, and you are encouraged to do so.

Please submit all Bylaws/Standing Rules suggestions to: Amy Brady at [email protected] MEMBER SERVICES 2nd VP Doris Knapek

ANN Written by HOLLAND TAYLOR Starring Libby Villari Directed by KRISTEN VAN GINHOVEN Kalita Humphreys Theater Thursday, October 24, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

Portrait of Texas’ legendary governor The feisty and unadulterated life of legendary Texas Governor Ann Richards is revealed in a stunning performance written by Emmy Award-winning actress and writer Holland Taylor (, ). Now an icon, both heroic and hilarious, Ann Richards is profoundly inspiring. While her leadership as a woman couldn’t be more timely, she remains truly a woman for all seasons. Libby Villari (Boyhood, Infamous, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Boys Don’t Cry), reprises her well-received role in this intimate chronicle of Richards’ legacy and how she was determined to make her mark on the world. “Frank, funny and warm” (New York Times), ANN is a captivating tribute to Richards’ life as an activist, politician and feminist champion. A co-production with Arena Stage For play information and schedule contact any one of the Co-Chairs: Sarah, Alice, Eleanor.

A Special Tribute Nan Hoffmann, founding president of NWC, passed away on July 15. As many of you will remember Nan came to the August, 2018, meeting and also appeared in our 50th year video. Fifty years of charity work serving those in need ... what a great legacy to leave behind! In 1968, Nan Hoffmann, along with 8 other women, formed Northwood Woman's Club with the desire to contribute to their community while promoting service opportunities. As the first President of NWC, within one year Nan grew the NWC membership to over 75 members. Today we have grown to over 350 President President members and raised and distributed $6 million dollars for 2018-2019 1968-1970 those in need. We are so very thankful of her legacy. NEW MEMBERS Sharyl Weber and Laura Williamson, Directors

NEW MEMBER SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE We need to thank all 18 New Members for the fabulous job they did collecting the school supplies our membership provided for Dover Elementary and Haggar Elementary. The supplies were sorted and divided evenly for each school; what a job!! Four SUVs, completely filled, delivered the boxes of school supplies to each location. Carol Welwood, last year’s new member, advised everyone how to prepare for this huge job. She attended both orientation meetings so we would know exactly what to do. Carol deserves a BIG THANK YOU for all her help. Also, we collected $3, 505.00 from checks, which was $1, 752.50 given to each school. I am sure this was a tremendous surprise to all and very much needed for both the school and students. The ladies of Northwood Woman’s Club can be very proud how well our School Supply Drive turned out for 2019-2020; it was a wonderful day!

Thanks to the 11 women from NWC who volunteered their time to hand out school uniforms at NDSM August 12-14th. NDSM has distributed uniforms to over 2000 students this year! Genesis Women’s Shelter

Thank you to the many volunteers who signed up for our projects. We still have room for more. The monthly meal teams are full for fall, but we need more cookies in December and team members for our Spring months. Our Holiday Drive in December could use a few people who will adopt a single client or a client with children. It’s a fun project to do with a friend – shop their wish list. You can also help by donating gift cards for those wishes that weren’t fulfilled completely or for those families who seek shelter on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day without any gifts. The staff will put your cards to good use. Small denominations for Walmart and Target will go a long way! Last but not least, the favorite project – the Mother’s Day Spring Purse drive is always open for more purses and the fun goodies that go inside. If you like to shop, this is the project for you. Please contact me for more information to help us support GWS. Linda Ayres, 214.696.1020; [email protected]

The Einstein School is looking forward to meeting club members who signed up for volunteer opportunities within our Einstein Community. Please join us for a tour of our school and meet the staff and students with whom you will be working. Sign up early with [email protected] as space is limited to 10 club members.
