211 BELKNAP PLACE | SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS 78212 | 210-733-9135 | [email protected] OUR SPEAKS Sabbatical- A complete Sabbath B'NAI Towards the end of the , God presents Moses with the rules for the sabbatical year. The people are told that for six years they are to sow their JUNE 4-5 fields and prune their vineyards, but, during the seventh year, the Bar Mitzvah of Gavriel land is to be given a sabbatical; Flores-Chasnoff, son of a Shabbat Shabbaton. (Leviticus Leslie and Brian Chasnoff 25:2-7) and Xelina Flores

What is a Shabbat Shabbaton? It is often translated as ‘a complete rest’. Ibn Ezra, a 12th century Spanish commentator sees it as rest for the soul and rest for the body. It is a rest above which there is no other rest and is meant to be a complete cessation from one kind of work so that one might focus on something else entirely. SHALOM The biblical rules of sabbatical provided the land with a chance to rejuvenate. This concept has led to the custom of sabbaticals in various professions that recognize the Y'ALL usefulness of taking a large block of time to refresh We welcome our newest members to and recharge. In the Fall of 2019, the Board of Trustees the TBE family! approved a sabbatical policy for clergy and granted us 3 months of sabbatical in the seventh year of our service to Temple Beth-El and every seven years after that. Irina Brenner & Christian Krause-Brenner Emily Berenson As I finish my seventh year as Senior Rabbi, I am grateful Duane Hagins to be able to take part of a sabbatical this summer. Later Lauren & Eithan Kotkowski this year, Cantor Berlin will take a partial sabbatical as Tiffany Borland & Alexander Jackson well. Schlenker & Jamell Yarborough Lisa Hibshman & Don Moore During the six weeks that I am away from San Antonio, Elie Allen I will create my own shabbat shabbaton and dedicate myself to resting my soul and my body. It will be a chance Anna Schragin & Jeremy Rosen to refresh and recharge as I take time to read, study, Samuel Villa Smith exercise, see family and hopefully if COVID restrictions Jacqueline Suttin permit, travel to . This brief pause from my Dylan Fedderman congregational responsibilities will certainly rejuvenate Melanie & Holden Neff me. I will return at the beginning of August with new ideas and perspectives energized for the High Holy Days and the year ahead. GREETERS NEEDED As we prepare to wind down a bit to enjoy what will hopefully be a relaxing and more typical summer for us Want to help with services? We are all, I look forward to seeing you at High Holy Day time. looking for volunteers to help us with May you each find some time to create your own shabbat Friday night and Saturday morning services. shabbaton in the months ahead. JUNE/JULY 2021 page 5 REMEMBERING RABBI LUNCH CHAVURAH MORLEY T. FEINSTEIN, Z”L

In 1981, Temple Beth-El was seeking the services of a newly ordained Assistant Rabbi. We wanted someone who was energetic; creative; well-organized; compassionate; skilled in relating to all age groups, especially youth; and learned in Torah. In Morley Feinstein, we found all these attributes and so much more.

During his six years with us, Morley brought renewed vitality to our congregation and won the hearts of scores of our members. He and I frequently went to lunch at a Mexican restaurant in San Antonio to study Hebrew texts. We designated these encounters as, “Torah and Tacos.” In addition, both of his sons, Aaron and Ariel, were born during Morley’s time with us.

Personally, it was a joy to work with him. Morley and I forged a marvelous partnership and continued to cultivate our relationship after he left our congregation to serve congregations in South Bend and Los Angeles. I had to joy of participating in his installation in both of these .

Several years ago, Alisa, our younger daughter, at whose PRIDE SHABBAT Bat Mitzvah Morley co-officiated, underwent surgery for breast cancer in Santa Monica. My wife, Lynn, her husband, Join us as we Marco, and I still remember his visit to us in the waiting room that late Friday afternoon, before he conducted celebrate Pride at Shabbat services.
