Your participation in this survey course will introduce you to the wonderment and beauty of Italian culture. Including the geography, basic conversational Italian, visual art and design, theatre, music, fashion, architecture, and the rich artistic history in from the to present. The course will also serve as a foundation for experience-based educational travel to Italy, where some projects and assignments may continue. Students will be responsible for writing response and research papers, visual art projects, and class presentations. Class sessions will include lecture, discussion and critiques, role- play, project development, museum/gallery visits, café and restaurant visits, food preparation, cinema/theatre/performance regular attendance, and project/class work time.

Regular attendance and participation is required, and the primary basis for grading. Additional assessments may include response papers, group critiques, self- assessment, tests, and criteria-based rubrics. Grading will follow the point/percentage system found in Power School. Students will be required to create a portfolio of work that may include; response papers, research papers, PowerPoint presentations, visual art projects, journals, videos, books, and other pieces determined through consultation with instructor.

A minimum of 10 projects must be included in the portfolio. Each project will be worth 10 pts. A final project worth 20pts. will be submitted ,with the final portfolio, as part of the 10 required projects. The portfolio will be evaluated in addition to the final exam to reach a final grade for the course. We will discuss the nature and breadth of “a project”. See assessment rubric.

Exams will be given at the mid-term and final weeks of the semester. The content of those exams will be covered in daily lectures and presentations. Content will be posted on my website, and it is your responsibility to access the information upon missing class time.

Failure to submit a final portfolio, or take the final exam, will result in a failing grade for the course. Discuss any extenuating circumstances in advance.
