We now follow Hothersall Lane for a short while to a footpath to Lower Collage Farm and Alston Farm. From here yet more field paths bring us out at St Lawrence’s & St Paul’s Church and Duke William car park. I kid you not when I say that this is a muddy walk!! I have booked the weather. Mellbreak & with Graham Hogg Grade A Distance 9 miles / 14.5km Climbing 37 00ft / 1128 m

We commence our walk today at Lanthwaite Green Farm and proceed to the shores of , following paths through Lanthwaite Wood. After contouring the northern end of the lake we make our way to Low Park and Flass Wood before climbing steeply to gain the summit of at 512m. On a clear day the views down the valley are arguably one of the best in the , with the combination of lakes and steep ridges providing a magnificent setting. From the summit we descend to Black Beck and climb again immediately up the flanks of Scale Force until we reach Lingcombe Edge and the summit of beyond at 755m. After a short descent and re-ascent we are soon at the summit of High Stile (807m) our highest point of the day. The descent options from High Stile are not suitable so we will retrace our steps to Red Pike where we can make an easier descent down to and back to Buttermere via Sourmilk Gill and Burtness Wood.

Grasmoor with Val Walmsley Grade B+ Distance 8 miles / 12.9 km Climbing 2795 ft / 852 m

Leaving the coach at Beck House we ascend Whiteside West Top with fine views of the Scottish Hills across the Solway Firth. From the East Top we have fine views of Gasgale Crags down to Gasgale Gill. We descend into the hollow and then climb to Hopegill Head from where it is a simple stroll to Sandhill. Moving down to Coledale Hause we proceed round Eel Crag to begin the ascent of (optional). Returning to the col we bear right above Addacombe Hole to the cairn of Wandhope and on to Whiteless Pike. From here we descend to the col above High Rannerdale followed by a drop down to Buttermere.

Mosedale with Dorothy & Jackie Grade B Distance 8 miles / 12.9km Max. Climbing 1000ft / 305m

We begin our walk from the area by the café making for the lake. We follow the field track to cross Scale Bridge over Buttermere Dubs and join a bridle path. Climbing, gradually at first and then more steeply, up to the fence line by Black Beck we turn right with some more climbing for a short distance. We now take the footpath along Mosedale passing the Mosedale Holly Tree as we go. Reaching Church Bridge we walk along the lane to Scalehill Bridge where we turn right into Lanthwaite Wood then High Wood to reach the main B5289. Here we have the choice of walking up Rannerdale, another 600ft / 183m of ascent, or walking lower down with just 100ft / 30m, and then back to Buttermere.

Buttermere Circular with Bill Manning Grade C Distance 5 miles / 8km (3¼ miles / 6km) Climbing 100ft /30 m

Starting the walk from the village we have a short road walk up to Wilkinsyke Farm before we continue on down to reach the shoreline path. This is a charming walk which takes us on a circuit of Buttermere, one of the prettiest and most isolated of the lakes. The mere itself nestles at the end of its valley with the steep sides of Red Pike, High Stile and rising up directly from it. When we reach Sour Milk Gill you can return to the village or continue the walk on to Crummock Water.

Please help to keep the coaches clean by removing muddy boots. Thank you.
