The CJFL TOTAL THURSDAY Newsletter
www.cjfl.net “For all your CJFL Information & News” The CJFL TOTAL THURSDAY Newsletter Brought to you by Issue 3 – Volume 1 "The CJFL gratefully acknowledges the support of the following Sponsors" "The Canadian Junior Football League provides the opportunity for young men aged 17 to 22 to participate in highly competitive post-high school football that is unique in Canada. The goal of the league is to foster community involvement and yield a positive environment by teaching discipline, perseverance and cooperation. The benefits of the league are strong camaraderie, national competition and life-long friends." History of True Sport In 2001, Canada’s Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for sport came together to bring ethics and respectful conduct back into the way Canadians play and compete. They believed that damaging practices—cheating, bullying, violence, aggressive parental behaviour, and even doping—were beginning to undermine the positive impact of community sport in Canada. The first step they took in turning back this negative tide was the signing of what is now known as the London Declaration, an unprecedented affirmation of positive sporting values and principles. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering. -
CSHOF 2020 Class Announcement
LEGENDS, TRAIL BLAZERS GAIN ENTRANCE INTO COQUITLAM SPORTS HALL OF FAME Coquitlam’s Sports Hall of Fame will enshrine a trio of trendsetters as the class of 2020. Joining the community’s celebration of sport are basketball’s Rich Chambers, soccer’s Geri Donnelly and hockey’s Darcy Rota. The three – Donnelly as an athlete, Chambers and Rota in the builders’ category – will be inducted alongside the class of 2019 at a virtual ceremony to be held on June 16, 2021. Donnelly was a member of Canada’s first women’s national soccer team, recording the first two goals in international play in a 2-1 win over the U.S. in just their second game together. She would go on to play 72 games for Canada over 13 years, including serving as captain at the 1999 World Cup. Chambers elevated and shaped the game of basketball as a coach over nearly 50 years behind local, provincial and national team benches. On the international stage, the Coquitlam resident spearheaded the Canadian women’s program to six World championships, including thrilling FIBA under-19 women’s victories over Australia and the United States. Rota, a member of the Vancouver Canucks alumni, was the driving force in bringing junior hockey to Coquitlam in 2001. He and the Coquitlam Express original ownership group skillfully stickhandled past skeptics and roadblocks to put a B.C. Hockey League team into the Poirier Sports Centre. As the club’s first general manager and president, Rota helped many players achieve college scholarships and a handful reach the ultimate dream of playing in the NHL. -

SPRING/SUMMER 2016 Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health FOUNDATION TOUCHING LEGACY FOR PEACE ARCH HOSPITAL HOGG BURSARY AWARDS PEI DOCTOR AN EXTRAORDINARY GIFT TO THE NEW ER LYNNE QUIGLEY & PATRICIA JOHNSTON MEET Carry on the tradition for the Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society ✚ LEADING THE WAY WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST EDITION OF ! As usual, the Foundation office has been buzzing with activity. We wrapped up our 2016 Gala, whichthrive raised a staggering $435,000+ for the purchase of a brand new, modern digital x-ray unit for the hospital’s medical imaging department, and the plans are coming together for the ER expansion and new residential care and hospice facility. Needless to say, it has been all hands on deck! Speaking of the Peace Arch Hospital Gala, we decided to shake things up for 2016 and create a whole new experience for our guests, some of whom come year after year. Our Vintage Vegas themed evening was a huge success complete with Elvis, the Rat Pack and a special appearance by Marilyn Monroe who sang her rendition of Happy Birthday to our outgoing board chair, Art Reitmayer, as only Marilyn can. Look for pictures of this fun night of philanthropy on page 6. I would also like to introduce you to our new board chair, Siobhan Philips, who took the reins just last month. She is a dedicated volunteer and passionate fundraiser who has a long history of giving back to her community. Check out pages 12 and 13 for a profile on Siobhan. Lastly, we feature two extraordinary donors in this issue – Westland Insurance who recently made a gift of $500,000 to the ER expansion project and the late Margaret Rodgers, a wonderful friend of the Foundation who dedicated her final birthday to fundraise for Peace Arch Hospital. -
