Powell talked about a simple, almost primitive style of life,wh€ire even though water was everywhere around, water for drinking and bathing was not so easy to come by. Homes had cisterns to gather rain water, which had to be boiled and was most often used for dishes and cooking. These were pic- tured. The Island ton had a shallow well that pumped pure sul- phur-water smelling like rotten eggs. At Bailey's, fresh water was available to purchase. He took questions from the animated crowd, and there were many, including one about the old riverboat, the Algiers, which briefly became a residence on the island. Powell closed by saying, "Though so much has changed, things that are ever-present are Sanibel's beautiful sunsets and its native vegetation." The Library will present a similar presentation by Powell on Wednesday February 16, at 7:00 p.m. again in the downstairs conference room. The Historical Village is also looking for- ward to having him speak again while showing additional slides, sometime in the spring. Both events will be open to the public.
