This will be the second national championship event and fourth NCAA postseason event that the University's women's athletic department has hosted in the past four years. The success of the NCAA Central region gymnastics meet held at Williams Arena in April1990 led to the University's securing of the national championships bid for 1992. The Central regional championship drew an NCAA-region record crowd of 7 ,591. Previously, in December 1988, the department set a national attendance record (17,202 over two days) in hosting the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship at Williams Arena. In December 1989, there were 4,969 in attendance (then a record for an NCAA first round match) as the Gophers beat Colorado in an NCAA first round volleyball match.
