Going last is sometimes a good position, sometimes a bad position, and we had five girls hit routines so I knew my teammates had my back and I just had to do my job. It all worked out for me and that was one of the best routines of my career.” “It’s amazing that she came out under this heavy pressure situation as a freshman and performed as well as she did everywhere,” Florida head coach Rhonda Faehn said.“To anchor that bar lineup, to have that fight for every little thing, it’s not only amazing, it speaks volumes for what she will continue to bring to this team in the future, which is exciting.” Faehn had her back to the scoreboard and paid no attention to the other teams competing.

Patterson was confi dent because she had senior Ashley Priess set for that last routine. Priess closed Alabama’s decisive balance beam rotation with a 9.950 and the Crimson Tide edged No. 1 seed Florida to win its second consecutive cham- pionship April 21 at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.. Alabama won its sixth title by posting a score of 197.850 to beat Florida’s 197.775, giving the Southeastern Conference the top two spots in its Super Six showdown with the Pac-12. Entering the fi nal rotation, Florida led Alabama by only 25-thousandths of a point. The Gators scored a 49.40 on their fi nal routine, the fl oor exercise, and Alabama won with its 49.50 on the beam. ”I realized our scores had matched up with theirs pretty well and it was going to come down to that last routine,” Patterson said. Florida closed its fl oor routine with a 9.925 from all-around champion Kytra Hunter. ”I knew that Ashley was going on the balance beam, and I knew it came down to that routine,” Patterson said. Gopher Sports News Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455 (for immediate release) June 26, 1991 UNIVERSITY TO HOST NCAA WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS-- The University of Minnesota women's athletic department will play host to the 1992 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships at the St. Paul Civic Center on Apri124-25, 1992 with the assistance of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer steering committee. Twelve teams and twelve individual all-around qualifiers will compete for national titles in what will be the NCAA's 11th annual championship in college women's gymnastics. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 1. The prices for two-day event tickets purchased in advance are $20 for lower level reserved seats and $16 for general admission. One-day ticket prices (sold the day of the event only) are $12 (reserved) and $10 (general admission). Special group ticket packages will be available by advance sale only. The chair of the steering committee for the championships is Anne Ford Nelson, vice president, Norwest Bank.     Gymnastics NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S Highlights Bruins Win Sixth Women’s Gymnastics Championship: At the precise moment UCLA gymnast Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs finished her floor exercise routine April 23, enthusi- astic screams of “UC-LA! UC-LA!” echoed around the seating area at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. “I felt my teammates jumping around and going crazy before I even got up there,” Hopfner-Hibbs said. “I knew something was going on.” Like, say, a national championship? One minute later, smiling widely, Hopfner-Hibbs landed her final jump to complete a 9.95 performance. She bounced off the stage into a sea of UCLA gymnasts, and the University of Florida’s home arena turned into a cheer-fest of Bruins blue. UCLA had won its sixth NCAA Division I Women’s Gymnastic Championship, but its first since 2004. For the Bruins, a team that considers legendary basketball coach John Wooden its mentor, it was a defining moment. Remember, this was a gymnastics program that once had five Olympians and won five national titles in eight years. Its head coach, Valorie Kondos Field, says she was actually told by another coach that a “monkey” could have coached those squads. “This championship means a lot more to me than the other five did,” Kondos Field said, “because the other five came in such quick succession.” A Bruins bubble, they called it. “The whole journey, looking back on the whole thing, is so excellent,” said Anna Li, a senior who had three scores of 9.9 in four events. “We were our own Bruin bubble, and we brought the Bruin bubble to Florida.” Did they ever.
