Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Umbria e delle Marche, Perugia, Italy; 2. Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Science, University of Perugia, Italy INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to perform a statistical evaluation of PRNP allele and genotype frequencies of the sheep population of Umbria and Marche regions in order to evaluate the probability to find genotypes susceptibles or resistant to scrapie in 8 italian sheep breeds: Sarda, Merinizzata, Merinos, Bergamasca, Massese, Appenninica, Fabrianese and Comisana. MATERIALS & METHODS Allelic Discrimination by Real-time PCR Farms 136 154 171.1 171.2 Blood DNA sampling extraction DNA from 171.2 different breeds 136 StepOne Plus Real-Time PCR System 154 Statistical analysis Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated as a measure of association between breed and frequencies of susceptible and resistant alleles and genotypes. Data with P-value ≤0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS Analysis on the behavior of the breeds respect to ARR allele and susceptible genotypes based on OR calculation on allele and genotype frequencies, respectively. Fabrianese and Appenninica have OR<1, while Merinos, Massese, Comisana, and Appenninica. P-values were Bergamasca breed have OR>1, but P-values were not statistically significant for all breeds except for Appenninica. statistically significant in both cases. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The results of statistical analysis as a whole, demonstrate that Sarda, Comisana, Massese and Merinos breeds have a low probability to be affected by scrapie than the other breeds analyzed and so they could be classifiable as resistant breeds. As regards to the other breeds, they have a medium to high probability to be susceptible to scrapie. To fulfill these requirements, this investigation aimed to implement feeding strategies to reduce the cost and energy level of diets for dairy breed lambs slaughtered at an older age than the light lambs, applying a feed restriction at 75% and/or including an inexpensive and local byproduct, such as durum wheat bran (DWB), as a fiber source. The proposed feeding plans were suitable to increase the slaughter age of lambs up to 120 days and produce lean carcasses that, compared to those from 90-day-old lambs, were heavier and with improved meat quality in terms of major water retention and tenderness.

[email protected] (Corresponding author) Summary Animal physiological functions involve enzymes and cofactors. Many of these substances can not be synthesized by the body, but derive from the diet. An example are micronutrients, that strongly affect production performance, whose requirements are often met by the farmers by adding supplements to the diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic variability of Italian sheep breeds searching for possible selective sweeps that harbor genes involved in the metabolism of micronutrients in. SNP A sample of 496 sheep belonging to 20 breeds farmed in Italy were genotyped with the Illumina Ovine 50K beadchip. Data were analysed by canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). Forty SNP located in regions of the genome containing loci involved in the metabolism of vitamins and minerals were detected. in particular, genes linked to the metabolism of vitamins and minerals such as Selenocysteine Lyase (SCLY), calcium sensing receptor (CASR), Solute Carrier Family 23 Member 1 (SLC23A1) and Thiamine Triphosphatase (THTPA) were highlighted. Keywords: selection signatures, micronutrients, sheep, Canonical Discriminant Analysis Introduction Nutritional status is of particular importance for productive performances in livestock. Growth, milk production, reproduction depend on a wide range of essential nutrients such as amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Moioli et al. Successful establishment of small ruminant recording systems in the Mediterranean countries B. Moioli1, J.-M. Astruc2 & S. Sanna3 1Istituto Sperimentale per la Zootecnia, via Salaria 31, 00016 Monterotondo, Italy 2 Institut de l’Elevage, BP 18, 31321 Castanet Tolosan Cedex, France 3Istituto Zootecnico Caseario per la Sardegna, Loc. Bonassai, 07040 Olmedo, Italy The paper analyses different production systems involved in the small ruminant sector in the Mediterranean area and the Near East countries. Summary A questionnaire was distributed among 22 countries of the basin and the collected data were used for estimation of breeding values and selection; extension services including feeding requirements, reproductive information and pathology patterns; support strategies for livestock development. The investigation underlines the relative importance of the sheep farming sector while goats are less important everywhere (their numbers amount to less than one third of the sheep). The national frame for the different sheep and goat breeds recording schemes is also reported together with the different breeding objectives of the various countries. The advantages of on-farm recording schemes for meat traits are described: mainly due to the extension service activity played by the technician when visiting the flocks and the testing of the males (through the daughters) in various flocks, which means in various conditions and environments; the French case study is also reported as an example of efficiency. Different recording schemes are described with the involvement of private and/or public sector, depending of the national organisation; the efforts in the countries are mainly concentrated on the recording of traits for meat and milk characters.
