    Forum The United States Naval Academy’s Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies Brannon Wheeler Abstract In August 2005, the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies was established at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This was the result of a multi-year review of the acad- emy’s curriculum as part of far-reaching efforts under Admiral Rodney Rempt, the current superintendent, to provide a more international and interdisciplinary curriculum to the students. The United States Naval Academy Founded in 1845, the United States Naval Academy was authorized by Con- gress to begin awarding a B.S. in 1933. It now offers a four-year curriculum leading to a B.S. in twenty-one majors, among them aerospace engineering, chemistry, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, English, general engineering, general science, history, information technology, math- ematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, ocean engineering, oceanography, physics, political science, quantitative economics, and sys- tems engineering. Majors in Arabic and Chinese are scheduled to be added with the graduating class of 2010. The Naval Academy has a student body of roughly 4,000 midshipmen who come from all fifty states, Washington (DC), Puerto Rico, and the Northern Marianas. The 2009 class, for which the latest statistics are avail- able, also includes eleven international students from Guyana, Honduras, Ireland, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Philippines, Singapore, Tai- wan, and Thailand. The student body includes roughly 20 percent minorities and 20 percent women.     MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE OF THE KINGDOM OF SPAIN ESTABLISHING A MIDSHIPMEN/CADET EXCHANGE PROGRAM (MCEP) The U.S. Department of Defense and the Ministry of Defense of the Kingdom of Spain, hereafter referred to as -the Parties-, have agreed to establish the framework of the Midshipmen/Cadet Exchange Program (MCEP) between the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and the Escuela Naval Militar (ENM), which is designed to strengthen friendship and understanding between the countries and their Navies and to enhance midshipmen education. The two Academies wish to arrange a strategic partnership within a broad educational and professional partnership. Focusing in the academic areas of engineering, science and humanities, the academies will strengthen the mental strength of their students, the professional qualifications of their respective faculty and staff and develop positive international relationships. This agreement originates from the terms agreed to by the participants, within the framework of the Agreement on Defense Cooperation between the Unites States of America and the Kingdom of Spain, dated 1 December 1998 and revised by the Protocol Amendment on 10 April 2002.
