Firstly, there is scientific or historical chronology, which deals with the real chronology of actual events. We do not see events fully as HGod sees them. Nor can we be certain that the most crucial contributors to those events have not been overlooked. There is a dark side to history which is better left untold. All the members of our church, including its leaders, “ . were once dark- ness” (Eph. 5:8). Scripture itself teaches us to be discreet. “It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret” (Eph. 5:12). If this darkness were fully recorded as God and the angels know it, then the grace and kindness of God toward such sinners would be the chief note of our account. Also we believe that the most amazing contributions to the work of God are unseen: Hours spent in the discipline of secret prayer; Lifelong application of God’s Word in family life; Patient catechiz- ing of children; Acts of charity, hospitality and sacrifice never mentioned; Witnessing and suffering for Jesus’ sake; Heart engage- ment in loving worship of God which is not measured by public appearances. The widow’s “very small copper coins” (Mark 12:42) mean more than the millionaire’s tithe. Only the Lord knows the heart that is most aglow with love for Him. Human history tends to shine the spotlight on generals, while within the ranks of their armies are countless heroes. It is not always the strategy of leaders but the grit and character of those who execute the plan which wins the day.

The apostles understood the amount of time from creation to Christ to include around 4,000 years. 2. Statements in the New Testament indicate that the apostles felt that Christ’s return could occur in the first century AD. 3. The apostles taught that the creation week which was composed of six days of work followed by a seventh day of rest would be paralleled in the course of history such that the kingdom of Christ would include a millennial reign of Christ on earth which was proceeded by 6,000 years of history starting at creation itself. The first statement is probably taken for granted, but may not often be the focus of much discussion and it may not have much doctrinal significance other than its inclusion under the larger concept that the apostles accurately understood all biblical teaching. The second statement articulates a very common perception that can be derived from certain plain statements that occur in the New Testament. There is no inherent difficulty with simultaneously accepting both these two conclusions. However, once we add the third point into the discussion, contradiction arises. For, if the apostles understood 4,000 years had occurred prior to Christ’s first coming and they believed that Christ could return in the first century AD then they could not have taught that Christ’s return and his kingdom could only occur after 6,000 years of history.
