Salzburg with its long clerical history of Archbishops still welcomes pilgrims most cordially. Visit historic churches, walk through beautiful countryside and impressive trails and find your inner tranquillity. Walk past green hills down to Lake Wallersee and through a nature reserve to Eugendorf. Day 3: Eugendorf - Salzburg 13 km + 130 m – 250 m See the mountains in the distance which you will pass during the next few days. Walk into Salzburg, a city with unsurpassed cultural and clerical heritage, little alleys and magnificent sights. You must have a taste of the famous ‘Salzburger Nockerl’, a light and delicious dessert. Pilgrim’s church Maria Plain overlooks the whole city and is well worth a detour. Day 4: Salzburg - Bad Reichenhall 17 km + 190 m – 140 m Across the city to Untersberg massif. At Schloss Marzoll you cross the German border and enter the lovely country Rupertiwinkl. The day ends in the Bavarian salt mining town of Bad Reichenhall. Visit the new thermal spa. Day 5: Bad Reichenhall - Unken 18 km + 180 m – 140 m Follow the river Saalach back into Salzburg County. Past Lake Saalachsee you penetrate into stunning mountain scenery and through the wild and idyllic Saalach valley. Day 6: Unken - Waidring 21 km + 380 m – 160 m Continue along the Saalach to the widening valley around Lofer. This mountain village was able to preserve much of its quaintness and original charm. Surrounded by the steep mountain ridges ‘Loferer Steinberge’ you ascend to the Strub pass and continue on your way to the Tyrol. Day 7: From Waidring - St. Johann in Tyrol 26 km + 320 m – 450 m Past lake Pillersee with its glittering waters and St. Jacob´s church on to the route to St Johann in Tirol. Enjoy the prospect of a hike with views of the Alps of Kitzbühel and the crags of the mountain range Wilder Kaiser. The evolution of the drainage system in the Eastern Alps is inherently linked to different tectonic stages of the alpine orogeny. Crustal-scale faults imposed eastward-directed orogen-parallel flow on major rivers, whereas late orogenic surface uplift increased topographic gradients between the foreland and range and hence the vulnerability of such rivers to be captured. This leads to a situation in which major orogen-parallel alpine rivers such as the Salzach River and the Enns River are characterized by elongated east–west-oriented catchments south of the proposed capture points, whereby almost the entire drainage area is located west of the capture point. To determine the current stability of drainage divides and to predict the potential direction of divide migration, we analysed their geometry at catchment, headwater and hillslope scale covering timescales from millions of years to the millennial scale.

The spatial distribution of fluvial and limnic sediments data provided new insights into the evolution of these conflu- ences expanding into the Salzburg Basin, Bad Reichenhall and Piding basins after the Last Glacial Maximum._________________ The two rivers deposited their coarse sediments in the basin, producing delta fans that subsequently progressed towards the basin center, leaving behind beds of coarse-grained sediments in the otherwise fine-grained lake deposits.
