A friend of Bob Dylan and praised by Nick Cave, Karen Dalton was one of the most amazing and moving voices of the 60s. The muse of Greenwich Village, Karen was adored by her peers yet remained relatively unknown to the general public. This exceptional musician's life has until now been shrouded in mystery, and she has become an almost mythical figure, and an icon, in both Swiss and international music circles. Through an 8,000-kilometer journey across the United States, from Colorado to Woodstock, New Orleans and New York, the director set out to shine a light on this elusive singer's life, to find those who knew her then and those she still influences today. From this enchanting journey, Emmanuelle Antille brought back unpublished images, unseen archives, and personal testimonies that tell the story of a shocking life. To date, A BRIGHT LIGHT - KAREN AND THE PROCESS is the only film about Karen Dalton. A Bright Light - Karen and the Process was successfully presented last year at Visions du Réel in Nyon. The film is currently on tour at festivals, including the Hof International Film Festival in Germany, Solothurn Filmtage, F.A.M.E. in Paris, Reel Music in Portland, DOXA in Vancouver, IndieLisboa in Lisbon and many more to come. 27 short unpublished videos, making of the film, are to be discovered on a special website retracing the journey and the shooting : www.abrightlight.ch/thejourney 5 DIRECTOR’S NOTE Originally, I wanted to talk about creation, its process and our relationship to the world through the figure of an artist. The central question was: How does the creative gesture unfold? How far can the desire to question the world and create lead us? What are we willing to sacrifice to achieve our deepest aspirations? When I happened to hear one of her songs, Sweet Substitute, I was immediately struck by her exceptional voice. It carried a story, a mystery capable of overturning us beyond time. I investigated and found out that she was completely unknown to the general public, but praised by Nick Cave and Bob Dylan among others. She had been the muse of Greenwich Village in New York in the 1960s and had lived in abandoned gold mines. It was very exciting. Digging deeper, I quickly realized that there was little information about her; no interviews, only 10 minutes of film and still the same 5-6 photographs. I then decided to conduct the investigation to gather as much material as possible about her life, her friends... and also to find out why such an extraordinary talent had remained unknown. This reconstitution lasted two years. With all the information gathered, I contacted her friends and decided to meet them. I put together a small team; Carmen Jaquier for the camera and Malika Pellicioli for the sound, and we left for thirty-three days of shooting across the United States. Emmanuelle Antille Born in 1972 in Lausanne, Emmanuelle Antille is an internationally renowned artist and director who has represented Switzerland in the national pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Her previous feature film AVANTI starred Hanna Schygulla and Miou-Miou and was a constant on the festival scene, garnering rave reviews and receiving an award at the FIFF in Namur. A Bright Light - Karen and the Process is her first documentary. For more information about the film : www.abrightlight.ch 6 PREVIEWS: EVENINGS-EVENTS WITH FILM AND CONCERT To mark the release of the film A BRIGHT LIGHT - Karen and the Process, a feature-length documentary about cult singer Karen Dalton, an exceptional and unique musical project has been created to accompany the film's Previews. This project brings together three of the finest contemporary Swiss female singers, Laure Betris (aka Kassette, winner of the 2018 Swiss Music Prize), Melissa Kassab (Swiss folk music revelation), and Dayla Mischler (Cheyenne and Delia Meshlir), for a tour across Switzerland ending in Montreux Jazz Festival for its final event the 13th of July. LAURE BETRIS, MELISSA KASSAB & DAYLA MISCHLER - TRIBUTE TO KAREN DALTON Combining their voices and influences from folk, blues and rock, the three performers will pay tribute to Karen Dalton by reinterpreting her most emblematic songs live, such as Katie Cruel, Same Old Man, Red Rocking Chair and Green Rocky Road. Songs revisited by the musicians who will offer an astonishing, powerful and contemporary version. The trio will perform in a light electrified configuration, but without artifice, to give pride of place to the strength of their voices and interpretation. Each concert will take place directly after the screening in the cinema and last 40 minutes. A 45T vinyl of three titles will be available for this occasion. Between February and July 2019, twenty dates are planned in the major cities of Switzerland, each concert being organized in partnership with a major club in each city. 7 THE MUSICIANS ©Medhi Benkler Laure Betris Born in 1981 in Fribourg, Laure Betris, alias Kassette, is constantly reinventing herself. She released her first solo album, "Chamber 4", in 2007, followed by three other albums. In addition to her numerous collaborations as a guitarist, pianist and singer (Gustav, Aurélie Emery, among many others), she has demonstrated her taste for change in 2016 by joining the oriental electro-rock trio Horizon Liquide and the psychedelic rock band H E X. An independent musician with a talent for teamwork, she is constantly exploring new areas. Laure Betris is the winner of the 2018 Swiss Music Prize. Melissa Kassab A revelation of the Swiss and European music scene since 2017, Melissa Kassab sings delicate and powerful folk music. Having grown up in Sion in the Valais mountains, this prolific traveler writes her songs while on the road between Switzerland, New Zealand and the United States. Since 2017, and the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, she has been constantly touring Switzerland and Europe, both on the stages of major clubs as well as at renowned festivals, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Eurosonic (NL), Bars en Trans (F), and Autumn Falls (BE). Dalya Mischler Born in 1992, Dalya Mischler is a visual artist and musician from Lausanne. She first played music in the band Cheyenne, well known on the French-speaking scene, and released a magnificent album of "primitive blues" entitled Cheyenne in 2013. In 2015, she created the group Delia Meshlir with Steven Navid and Sylvain Papotto. Her musical universe mixes powerful rock (reminiscent of PJ Harvey) with a very personal touch of blues and melancholic melodies. She is undeniably a huge talent for the future! 8 FOR MORE INFORMATIONS ABOUT THE FILM www.abrightlight.ch Press Contact Sara Hesse [email protected] 078 930 96 28 Contact Distribution SISTER DISTRIBUTION - Abel Davoine [email protected] 022 808 08 63 9 PRESS REVIEW TV 31.01.19 > 1245 RTS (Julie Evard) 31.01.19 > Puce à l’oreille (Iris Jimenez) PAPERS 25.01.19 Le Courrier (Bertrant Tappolet) 25.02.19 Le Temps (Arnaud Robert) 30.01.19 La Liberté (Olivier Wyser) 04.02.19 La Gruyère 06.02.19 Le Nouvelliste (Jean-François Albelda) 18.02.19 T Magazine ( Caroline Stevan) RADIO 21.01.19 > Pony Express (Ellen Ichters) https://pages.rts.ch/couleur3/programmes/pony-express/10135278-pony-express-du-21-01- 2019.html - timeline-anchor-segment-10135286 21.01.19 > Paradiso (Yann Zitouni) https://www.rts.ch/play/radio/paradiso/audio/paradiso?id=10117466 28.01.19 > Radio Vostok, La Quotidienne https://radiovostok.ch/un-road-movie-lumineux-et-envoutant-sur-les-traces-de-karen-dalton/ 30.01.19 > Grrif, Engrenage (Céline Roduit) https://www.grrif.ch/interview/devant-le-miroir-face-a-karen- dalton/?fbclid=IwAR2fSVU__21vrZjWgUM5-56Cs7d2XjVQ1pX87JbKqrGItE2bshwBuLVc4RY 31.01.19 > 24Heures (François Barras) https://www.24heures.ch/culture/cinema/Sur-la-piste-de-Karen-Dalton-Emmanuelle-Antille-deniche- de-l-or/story/12660600 02.02.19 > Nez à Nez (Nicolas Julliard) 04.02.19 > Magnétique (Anya Leveillé) : https://www.rts.ch/play/radio/magnetique/audio/karen-dalton-a-bright-light?id=10154558 15.01.19 > Vertigo (Pierre Philippe Cadert et Laurence Froidevaux) 10 VENDREDI 25 JANVIER 2019 LE TEMPS Culture 21 Karen Dalton, une voix qui s’échappe encore CINÉMA La vidéaste Emmanuelle Antille réalise son premier documentaire, «A Bright Light», qui traque la mémoire perdue de la chanteuse de blues. • FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane.

You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Rhodes Every episode we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock. You know, fire, combustibles, albums that bump eternally. Today we will be deep diving together into the cult classic 1971 album by Karen Dalton, In My Own Time. 00:00:24 Music Music “Take Me” off the album In My Own Time by Karen Dalton. Sad, slow music with crooning, raspy, vibrating vocals. Take me to your darkest room Close every window and lock every door [Music fades out as Morgan speaks.] 00:00:46 Morgan Host Turn to your neighbor and say, “I thank God I don’t look like what I’ve been through.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that over the years; and more than an acknowledgement of the virtue of melanin, it is meant to suggest that whatever else a close read of your backstory might reveal, pain doesn’t always show on your face. ‘Cause sometimes it shows up in your voice, as it did with Karen Dalton on her album for Paramount records, In My Own Time. Karen Dalton sounded like what she’d been through. Raspy world- weariness, longing and sadness, even on songs meant to be happy like Holland-Dozier’s “How Sweet It Is.” Karen Dalton did two things for sure on this album: uncovered pain on an album of covers, and spent those covers strumming her pain with her fingers, in blues, in folk, in gospel, and in rock.

Karen Dalton.
