"C" is theby Bette Addington Word Cardio is the “C” word for bowlers currently. Bowling leagues is not only a competitive thing for us to do but believe it or not, it helps keep us in shape. Can you imagine how heavy that bowling ball is going to feel when we do get to come back and bowl again? Weather is cooperating, so get out and get some fresh air and sunshine. Set a goal every day and work to accomplish it.

Here’s the feedback I got from those who responded when I asked for what they are doing these days to work exercise into their routine. Thank you to all that took the time to respond. Stay healthy! “Kady loves to take her scooter out while I walk around our neighborhood every day.” –Jana Richardson “Wine-ups every day!”—Michelle Dunn (Michelle is also walking approximately 2 miles each time she ventures out.) “Orange Theory at-home exercise program via their app, running and yoga. End the day with Michelle’s Wine-Ups, lol!”—Nancy Curran “Hello, yes I’ve been walking around the neighborhood curling barbells. Usually after or before dinner. Followed by pushups and sit-ups. This week we’ll try the elliptical.”—Alex Garcia

AMF Southwest Lanes issued this statement, “Your health and safety are important to us, which is why, out of an abun- dance of caution, we are closing our centers across the country beginning March 17th to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We want you to have fun, but your safety is our first priority. We appreciate your understanding and support during this time.” Scheduled time to re-open is Fri., May 1st. AMF Southwest Lanes is also welcoming back all winter leagues to finish their season when they re-open. Summer leagues (that were supposed to start April 20th) will now begin after Winter leagues can return and finish their last week. League bowlers were not only alarmed this happened but being we have just seven weeks or so of winter season left, it puts all of us in panic mode. Are all league bowlers paid up to date? Will we be able to return and finish our league before Summer leagues begin? Should we just finish our league now? Have we done our league’s Audit yet? It should be interesting to see how this all plays out--especially since we can’t all get our league together since the centers are closed.

League Play Info from USBC Rules USBC considers the coronavirus as an emergency and, therefore, the unanimous consent of all team captains (Rule 122) requirement for leagues to change the schedule does not apply. The decision to change the schedule may be made by a majority of the votes cast by the league board of directors (officers and team captains). The league, before a decision is made regarding the league schedule, must come to an agreement with the bowling center management concerning the league contract. Verbal or written, the league has a contract. Whether the center is closed by choice or because of governmental restrictions, league officers should contact the center before any league decision regarding a change in schedule is made. The league needs to know if the center is going to charge lineage fees for the balance of the contract. Once the league has an agreement with the center, the league board of directors (officers and team captains) has a couple of options to consider. The decisions may be made via email, text, or phone or conference call during this difficult time.

Postpone the schedule and complete the league at a later date Some bowlers may choose to withdraw; USBC will not hold bowlers accountable for the fees required in Rule 114a. Any prepaid fees must be returned fully to a withdrawing bowler and should be done immediately. The bowler(s) also is entitled to a pro-rated share of the prize fund based on the number of weeks paid. RUSTY BRYANT Cancel the league schedule Lessons by Appointment All prepaid fees must be returned to the rightful bowlers. The standings are final as of the date the league decides to cancel. If the center charges lineage for the balance of the contract, it is deducted from the league prize fund. The league board of directors must also decide how the prize list will be adjusted. For split season leagues, because of the inability to hold a playoff, the league board may declare co-champions and divide THE PRO ZONE any additional playoff money equally among teams in the playoff. “The Ultimate Pro Shop”

April 23, 2020 CaliforniaBowlingNews.com Page 5 It’s Time to Honor ‘Grab Your Balls’ Composer by Fred Eisenhammer TIMBERLAKE, Ohio – There’s no bowling going on in the L.A. area these days. The coronavirus crisis has made a sickening appearance in our life and quieted the sounds of activity in so many venues. But if bowling were rockin’ and rollin’ now, some people might remember “Rockin’ Ray” Miller’s celebrated refrain and dash to their nearby bowling centers. “Rockin’ Ray” made it perfectly clear: The time is always right to “Grab Your Balls, We’re Going Bowling.” That was the name of the iconic song that “Rockin’ Ray” wrote and composed. The song arguably is the most “Rockin’ Ray” Miller composed his iconic bowling/ popular, most played polka song in 1995. bowling and polka song ever. “Rockin’ Ray” died last year at 80 and he left an enduring legacy: About 70,000 jukeboxes across the country are set up to play his song. His legacy shouldn’t be confined to jukeboxes. The bowling Hall of Fame and polka Hall of Fame should immortalize him by honoring him with a spot in their museums. Four years ago, I made the case for “Rockin’ Ray” to be enshrined by those halls of fame. My plea fell on deaf ears. It’s time those halls get it right. The induction is long overdue. By inducting “Rockin’ Ray” Miller’ posthumously, his contribution would finally be recognized. In 1995, “Rockin’ Ray” wrote the lyrics and music to his song, which became a huge polka dance hit. “The song is supposed to be all about fun,” said Diane Miller, the widow of “Rockin’ Ray.” And that’s precisely why “Rockin’ Ray” belongs in a bowling hall of fame – he summed up the game in a few clever verses that are fun to listen to. And if you’re a polka fan, it’s just as much fun as a dance song. The sport of bowling is more than players’ blasting 300 games and 800 series and tireless workers dedicated to serving the game. Those elite bowlers and hard-working administrators definitely deserve to receive Hall of Fame recognition. But why not go outside the box and pay respect to a selfless individual who has made a hugely positive impact on the game in his own inimitable way? Diane, a big polka aficionado who plays the accordion, says the song’s third and final verse is her favorite. And for many bowlers, the final verse pretty much illustrates their devotion to the game: “We’ll add up all our scores in just a blink. Then we’ll buy ourselves another drink. We’ll spend an hour trying to explain. Why we didn’t bowl a better game.”

The song is available on the Internet, though most versions have taken some liberties with the original version. One video is absolutely laugh-out-loud funny. Six polka bands (at last count) have used the song (without paying compensation to “Rockin’ Ray”) as part of their albums to ramp up sales – and the song has proved to be successful at doing just that. The song is an absolute hoot and Diane, for one, says she’s listened to it a couple of hundred times at home – not to mention assorted times outside the house. “It just wakes you up and makes you want to move,” Diane says. “Rockin’ Ray,” incidentally, was a more-than-respectable bowler who used his league experiences to concoct the words. He’s so modest that he laughed at the thought of getting credit for his song. “The only good thing I’ve done in bowling is quitting,” joked “Rockin’ Ray” after he retired from the game. He actually averaged a sterling 189 in his heyday and didn’t quit the sport until he was in his upper 60s. On second thought, “Rockin’ Ray” allowed that, “Well, I’ve done two good things. I’ve also written a song.” It’s a song that made “Rockin’ Ray” relatively little money. A spot in a hall of fame would be a fitting tribute for the man who has encouraged others to “grab their balls” and go bowling. Page 6 CaliforniaBowlingNews.com April 23, 2020

USBC Events To The Fall continued from page 1 instead of two. Limiting the number of teams per squad will allow USBC to cut the number of partici- pants in half for each squad, keeping areas like the squad room from being overcrowded. Typically, all bowlers on cram into the squad room before each squad, which would be the exact opposite of social distancing. USBC also said it would eliminate early morning and late night doubles and singles squads at the events, which would no longer be needed as a result of hosting fewer teams per day. USBC provided the following details in the release on rescheduling for teams: USBC will provide pre-registration to Captain’s Club members – coordinators with five or more teams – starting April 17, asking them to submit a form with the dates their teams want to compete, which will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will open to the public on April 27, at which time teams will be able to go into the Online Registration System and move their 2020 teams to any open dates/squads. Teams that choose not to compete in 2020 may request to have their payment used for the 2021 tournament or they may submit a request for a refund.

Juanita Weber continued from page 1 bowling history. The legacy she leaves behind includes son Richard (Sue) Weber, Jr., daughter Paula (Jeff) Darmon, son John (Chris) Weber and son Peter (Renee) Weber; grandchildren Lisa, Brian, Nicole, Ashley-Marie, Nick, Ryan, Joshua, and Stacy; great- grandchildren Avery, Austin, Isla, Kaisen, Kamila, Leo, Hattie and Eli; and sister-in-law Sharon (Jim) Nizzola. In keeping with family tradition and her wishes, Juanita Weber will be cremated. No funeral services will be held. The family asks that any memorials in her honor be donated to the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, 621 Six Flags Drive, Arlington, TX 76011.

Bowling Came Back continued from page 1 played only 126 games and won the World Series over the Chicago Cubs. Babe Ruth was the top left-handed pitcher in the American League that season, winning 19 games in the shortened season. Playing the World Series at the customary time in October would have put the play- ers of both teams at risk because the typical flu season usually takes off in October. The decision to shorten the 1918 Baseball season was one of the wisest decisions in Baseball history. As it turned out October 1918 was one of the deadliest months of the Spanish Flu pandemic, with nearly 200,000 deaths in the United States. By completing the World Series in early September probably thousands of lives were saved. There are many stories surrounding Babe Ruth, the hero of the that 1918 World Series. He was known for his shenanigans and missteps. He was a fun-loving guy who was great with kids, visited hospitals and liked his beer. His dad ran a tavern in Baltimore, Maryland and I’ve seen photos of Babe bartending in his dad’s saloon. So, who else but Babe Ruth would waste an opportunity to participate in a pandemic? Why not be one of the most famous survivors of the Spanish Flu pandemic. That was Babe Ruth. On an off day in May of 1918 Babe went to Revere Beach, played with kids, drank some warm beer, ate some hot dogs and a woke up the next morning with 104° fever. With regards to Bowling, all Bowling Centers were ordered closed. They did close along with billiard parlor’s, saloons and card rooms. However, the American Bowling Congress (ABC) Open Championships were competed. Cincinnati hosted the 1918 tournament and 654 teams participated. That figure was down about 8 1/2% from the previous tourna- ment in 1917 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. I don’t know if the drop in participation was the result of the pandemic, but it could have been a factor for the drop in the number of teams participating. The 1919 tournament was held in Toledo with 796 teams participating. The first Women’s International Bowling Congress (WIBC) championships were con- ducted in 1916-17 in St. Louis, Missouri with eight teams participating. The WIBC did hold tournaments in 1918 and 1919 just as the ABC had done. The 1918 event was held in Cincinnati with 32 teams participating and the 1919 event was held in Toledo with 440 teams participating. The only time the ABC or WIBC ever canceled their national tournament was 1943, 1944 and 1945 because of World War II. As all of us know, the entire sports world of today is shut down. Most sports appear to be postponing the majority of their events and canceling only a few. No one knows if there will be a World Series, Basketball Playoffs or Stanley Cup Finals this season. We could see the cancellations of 1918 repeated. Bowling has had cancellations postponements. Most winter Bowling leagues that I am aware of have been canceled. However, our National and State tournaments have only been postponed. So far! No matter what happens in the next few weeks and months, we know that Bowling will be back better than ever. While most of us don’t know it, nothing that is happening today is unprecedented. What we are going through today was experienced by Americans and people throughout the world during the pandemic of 1918-19. Back in the early days of the 20th century, after the passing of the Spanish Flu, our country, the rest of the world and the sports world came back bigger and better than ever. The ROARING TWENTIES were just around the corner. Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Jack Dempsey, Bill Tilden and Hank Marino burst on to the American scene and sports were back. BOWLING CAME BACK.
