Learning with Picture Books: View, Voice and Vocabulary Learning with Picture Books: View, Voice and Vocabulary

Picture books have emerged as more than read-aloud books for young children. They are wonderful resources to increase children’s listening and speaking skills as well as mastering key vocabulary in context.

During this presentation, we will be viewing numerous picture books to discover their special features. Always remember to share these tips:

• VIEW illustration for more details • VOICE predictions, questions and answers • VOCABULARY will increase with meaningful repetition VIEW: Factors to Select Picture Books

Book and Print Features • How many words and lines of text are on each page? • How many pages are in each book? • What size is the print? • Are there great pictures, and how easy are the pictures to understand or interpret ? High Frequency Words

There are approx. 600,000 words in English, however only a small number appear in print frequently.

Only 13 words account for more than 25% of the words in print. (a, and , for, he, is, in, it, of, that, the, to, was, you)

No David Series

David Shannon’s mother saved his early childhood drawings. This artwork helped create the vision for this book.

On most pages are the words: "No, David!" ...and a picture of David doing things he was not supposed to do.

1999 Caldecott Honor Book The David series definitely relies on the illustrations to carry a great deal of meaning.

Take a closer look at these illustrations to see how you could discuss in your classroom.

If you look closely, you'll see Fergus in all of the David series books — somewhere!

Fergus became popular so he became the star of his own book!

Good Boy Fergus! is a picture book not only about David Shannon’s West Highland terrier but also about the relationship between David and his pet. VOICE: Predictions with Picture Books

• Often we hear the expression, a picture is worth a thousand words. • Look for picture books that introduce vocabulary with appropriate pictures and graphics. • This provides good mental images for children to make predictions, ask questions, and provide answers. We want the story to be enjoyable so they remember and read on their own later.

Picture Books and TPR

• Look for picture books that have interesting content for acting out with students. • Young children love “action.” Viewing the characters in the story to see their body language/ gestures. TRP motions are fun to duplicate in class if possible.

New Vocabulary in Context - Rhyming Text

Books with repetition or catchy text makes for great entertainment. Look for rhyming text that is fun to read aloud, sing and sometimes act out. The text should be relatively easy to remember so children can join in when they are ready.

Rhyming word family stories are wonderful books to build vocabulary quickly. 38 Common Word Families __at __ap __an __ot __op
