Notes for WILLIAM ANDREW SKINNER: William at the age of 21, the oldest of 9 children, traveled with his family via covered wagon from Washington County, Iowa to Peabody, Kansas in October 1896. In 1899 he married Sarah and their first child was born in Nov. 1900, Ellen Cleo.He went into business with his younger brother Odie. Some sort of dispute arose out of this arrangement, Odie repossessed all of William's possessions and a with that William packed his family and all his belongings and headed west toward Colorado. He didn't return to Peabody for 30 years. Not even for his fathers funeral. In his later years he made up with his brother and they visited as often as they could. In Colorado he worked a variety of jobs from dray man to hauling coal. The oldest children were born in Colorado Springs. Later on William and Sarah went out to Hanover and homesteaded a couple hundred acres. Those were the tough times for the family. Sarah became ill in 1902 and was sick the rest of her life. She had 2 set of twins back to back. She acquired some sort of lung ailment either emphysema or bronchitis which eventually took her life. The children who were not married took care of her. Some gave up one year of school to help nurse Sarah. She died 1 day after Christmas in 1933 at 55 years. William at the end of his life acquired colon cancer and in 1942 along with his daughter Hazel traveled out to California to visit with his son Bill and his family, there he died at the age of 67 years. He is buried along side Sarah and their infant son Edgar in the Hanover Cemetery.

Notes for ELLEN CLEO SKINNER: I was the first child of WILLIAM ANDREW SKINNER and SARAH "SADIE" CARSON SKINNER. I was born in Peabody, Kansas November 9, 1900. Papa's family moved to Kansas from Iowa and mama's family came from Philadelphia to Kansas. They were married in Peabody, Kansas November 29, 1899. Mama was a niece of Kit Carson and was related to General Palmer, who founded Colorado Springs. We moved to Colorado Springs when I was one year old. We lived in a condominium where the Seldom Ridge Grain Company is now. I remember one time when I was about two years old that mama went shopping and was wearing a fur around her neck. She put it on me and when I walked it would drag the ground and make a noise on the boardwalk. We moved to Moreno Avenue after Isabel was born, then to Washington Avenue after Rachel was born, then to our house that papa built on Park A venue in 1907. Papa pulled the large bell into the Bell Tower of the Courthouse with his horses. I remember Teddy Roosevelt coming to town when I was in the Lowell School and rode his white horse that was prancing and our class sang a song and tipped our little hats to him. William (Billy) and Martha (Sue) were also born in Colorado Springs. Edgar (John), Edward, Alvord (Jiggs), Hazel (Sis) and Ross (Bud) were born on the homestead in the Chico Basin north of Hanover. We moved to the homestead April 1, 1911. After moving to the homestead, the horses had sand compaction and died. Papa had to go to Colorado Springs to work to support the family who stayed on the homestead. He came home on weekends, about 31 miles, and had to walk back and forth. The neighbors were very good and put out our crops and garden that spring for us. Isabel and I hauled water in a little red wagon about two miles for the family to use. Also we helped papa haul water in a regular wagon. A 60 foot well was finally dug on the place and it was very good water. When digging the well a human skeleton was dug up, but when it was brought up out of the well it deteriorated very rapidly. In about 1912 papa bought a team of horses and left his job in Colorado Springs to devote his time to farming and caring for the family. In 1913 we had a big blizzard that virtually covered the house. There were a lot of hard times, hard work, rattlesnakes, coyotes, etc., but we made it and it was probably good for us to experience it to be able to face the world and its hardship. I remember that we raised a lot of watermelons and papa delivered them in a wagon to Colorado Springs and sold them to people. It took one day to go, one day to sell and one day to come back home. When I was about 17 years old we had a bad windstorm, possibly a tornado close by, that about blew our roof off. We were hanging onto the roof and Isabel ran three miles to the Greens to get help for papa. When I was about 21 years old, lightning struck the house in the southeast comer. I was playing the organ and the lightning knocked me out. Susie was thrown against the wall and Rachel and mama were stunned. They threw water on me to bring me around. . After marrying Walter, we had Wilbur, Hubert, Kenneth and Wilberta when we lived on the Beuker place just north of Hanover School. We then moved to Missouri October 29, 1929. We lived near Papinsville, Missouri for about three years. Mama died December 26, 1933 while we lived in Butler. I took John and rode a train to Colorado for that sad occasion. Then we moved to near Christopher, which was about nine miles southeast of Neosho, Missouri for about seven years. Those were seven hard years, due to drought conditions; Chester and Ervin were born while we were near Christopher. Then we moved back to the Butler area. We now are retired and live in Raymoore. There are many found memories that linger in my mind of my childhood and adulthood. It has been a good life.

Notes for RACHEL MARGARET SKINNER: I was four years old the spring we moved to the homestead. May 2, 1911 Mama, Ellen, Isabel, Rachel, Susie and Bill spent the first summer all-alone out there, with only an occasional sheepherder and plenty of coyotes around us. Mama was a brave and hardy person. Papa rode a bike out to see us on weekends. Reason for the bike, all the horses died from eating sand. They were city animals and the new spring grass was so good they ate it into the sand filling their stomachs with sand. Buffalo horns were all about, also their bones left from the hiders (men who killed them for the hides). This did help us some, as bones were in demand for buttons, combs, etc. We kids helped pick them up and papa haled them to town. Of course he had gotten more horses by then. How wonderful it was when Papa came home. He most always brought us a bag of candy and big glorious bananas. I could go on forever so this is where I'll stop. Would have to write a book about where Jack and I wandered. Such a good life!

Notes for WILLIAM CARSON SKINNER: Bill and Leona moved from Colorado to California in the fall of 1940 when their youngest child Kenneth William was 3 mos old. They loaded up their model A Ford and along with Bill's brother Jiggs (Alvord Carson Skinner) headed west toward California. Along with Kenneth their other children were Eugene and Frieda. They made a hammock and strung it across the interior of the car so the baby could lay down. Their destination in California was Orange Co, California where Leona's uncle William McQueen lived. Along the way they spent a couple of days with Leona's uncle Hugh McQueen in Arizona and then continued on toward California. They stayed with William McQueen until Bill was able to get a job. Leona's cousin Delbert McQueen would drive Bill around to different job prospects. Bill was able to get a job with Douglas Aircraft in EI Sequndo. They moved to EI Segundo and purchased a house at 510 W Palm Ave. Two more children were born while they lived in EI Segundo, Barbara Jane and Marguerite Stella. In 1947 they moved to Lawndale where Danny and Robert were born. The home in EI Segundo was need of a great deal of repair, termites nearly destroyed the house. So purchasing another home was cheaper than repairing the existing one. They stayed in Lawndale for 33 years. They raised 7 children there. In 1975 Bill retired from Hughes Aircraft and in 1980 Leona retired from the retail business, manager of the Super Yam Mart. They sold their house in Lawndale and move to Ventura, California. Leona died in Ventura in 1986 and in 1991 Bill moved to Morro Bay, California. In June of 1993 Bill moved to Fresno. There on October 23 he died from complications of "Aplastic Enemia".

Notes for WARREN VALKO: YAKIMA - Warren Stanley Valko, 72, of Selah, passed away suddenly Sunday, January 21, 2007 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Warren was born January 25, 1934 in Elko, PA to Matthew and Alice (Borgan) Valko. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Warren worked 40 years for McDonnell Douglas in Torrance, CA as a metal fitter before retiring in 1989. He moved from Carson, CA to Yakima in 1989.
He especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He loved working with his hands, creating, building, remodeling and making things, such as: kitchen cabinets, furniture of all sorts, toys, gifts and more. He also enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes, camping, boating and waterskiing. He built his own motorcycle and enjoyed riding. In 1965, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the city of Lawndale, CA for saving the life of a young girl (niece).
He is survived by his wife, Lucretia "Chris" Valko of Selah, his children, Debbie Skinner of Harrisburge, PA, Cathy Valko of LaGrande, OR, Michael (Charlotte) Valko of Selah, and David (Gabrielle) Valko of Hawthorne, CA, step-children, Patricia (Stephen) Muecke-Thibault of Fallbrook, CA, Sandra (Calvin) Collins of Selah and Karen (Richard) Lemon of Black Diamond, WA; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, also a brother, Tommy (Phyllis) Valko and a sister, Dolores Shiffer, both of CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-daughter, Jeanette Borden and a brother, Donald Valko and a niece, Teresa Valko.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Notes for William Andrew Skinner: William at the age of 21, the oldest of 9 children, traveled with his family via covered wagon from Washington County, Iowa to Peabody, Kansas in October 1896. In 1899 he married Sarah and their first child was born in Nov. 1900, Ellen Cleo.He went into business with his younger brother Odie. Some sort of dispute arose out of this arrangement, Odie repossessed all of William's possessions and a with that William packed his family and all his belongings and headed west toward Colorado. He didn't return to Peabody for 30 years. Not even for his fathers funeral. In his later years he made up with his brother and they visited as often as they could. In Colorado he worked a variety of jobs from dray man to hauling coal. The oldest children were born in Colorado Springs. Later on William and Sarah went out to Hanover and homesteaded a couple hundred acres. Those were the tough times for the family. Sarah became ill in 1902 and was sick the rest of her life. She had 2 set of twins back to back. She acquired some sort of lung ailment either emphysema or bronchitis which eventually took her life. The children who were not married took care of her. Some gave up one year of school to help nurse Sarah. She died 1 day after Christmas in 1933 at 55 years. William at the end of his life acquired colon cancer and in 1942 along with his daughter Hazel traveled out to California to visit with his son Bill and his family, there he died at the age of 67 years. He is buried along side Sarah and their infant son Edgar in the Hanover Cemetery.
