Directions From Nearest Mainline Stations From Euston Station: Allow 40 mins from the Euston to the College including walking time By Black Cab: A cab will get you there in less than 15 mins – will cost under £10. By Tube: You will have to physically leave Euston Mainline Station and walk the 5 mins to Euston Square where you can get on the Hammersmith & City or Circle Line to Edgware Road. By Bus: The Number 18 from Euston runs to the Edgware Road. It leaves from the main road outside Euston Station but you need to cross the main road and check you are going in the direction of Harlesden. The buses will not accept money, so you either need to Purchase an Oyster Card and put money on it or you some but stops have ticket machines by them but not all. -

Johnson: Social Contract and Energy in Pimlico ORIGINAL ARTICLE District heating as heterotopia: Tracing the social contract through domestic energy infrastructure in Pimlico, London Charlotte Johnson UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, University College London, London, WC1H 0NN, UK Corresponding author: Charlotte Johnson; e-mail: [email protected] The Pimlico District Heating Undertaking (PDHU) was London’s first attempt at neighborhood heating. Built in the 1950s to supply landmark social housing project Churchill Gardens, the district heating system sent heat from nearby Battersea power station into the radiators of the housing estate. The network is a rare example in the United Kingdom, where, unlike other European states, district heating did not become widespread. Today the heating system supplies more than 3,000 homes in the London Borough of Westminster, having survived the closure of the power station and the privatization of the housing estate it supplies. Therefore, this article argues, the neighborhood can be understood as a heterotopia, a site of an alternative sociotechnical order. This concept is used to understand the layers of economic, political, and technological rationalities that have supported PDHU and to question how it has survived radical changes in housing and energy policy in the United Kingdom. This lens allows us to see the tension between the urban planning and engineering perspective, which celebrates this Johnson 1 system as a future-oriented “experiment,” and the reality of managing and using the system on the estate. The article analyzes this technology-enabled standard of living as a social contract between state and citizen, suggesting a way to analyze contemporary questions of district energy. -

The sprawling Buckinghamshire destination, administered by the National Trust, astounds with the richness and variety of a property that was augmented, enriched, and, indeed, reshaped by an all-star 18th- century cast hired by the aristocratic Temple family: Charles Bridgeman, Sir John Vanbrugh, James Gibbs, William Kent, John Michael Rysbrack, and Lancelot “Capability” Brown, who was then just starting out on a career that would result in England’s transformation from stiff formal gardens to rolling landscapes that look utterly natural—but actually aren’t. “There’s so much going on at Stowe,” says David Nathans, the president of the Royal Oak Foundation, the energetic American fundraising arm of the National Trust. By that he means not only plants, trees, lakes, and the earthly like but scores of monuments, follies, temples, bridges, and other architectural delights that the public can see 365 days a year. Among them is what’s left of the 1730s Temple of Modern Virtue, a William Kent limestone frivolity that was built as a fool-the-eye ruin—it was intended as sarcastic commentary on Sir Robert Walpole, the avaricious British prime minister, who is depicted as a headless torso—but which has become, literally, tumble-down. -
The Custom House
THE CUSTOM HOUSE The London Custom House is a forgotten treasure, on a prime site on the Thames with glorious views of the river and Tower Bridge. The question now before the City Corporation is whether it should become a luxury hotel with limited public access or whether it should have a more public use, especially the magnificent 180 foot Long Room. The Custom House is zoned for office use and permission for a hotel requires a change of use which the City may be hesitant to give. Circumstances have changed since the Custom House was sold as part of a £370 million job lot of HMRC properties around the UK to an offshore company in Bermuda – a sale that caused considerable merriment among HM customs staff in view of the tax avoidance issues it raised. SAVE Britain’s Heritage has therefore worked with the architect John Burrell to show how this monumental public building, once thronged with people, can have a more public use again. SAVE invites public debate on the future of the Custom House. Re-connecting The City to the River Thames The Custom House is less than 200 metres from Leadenhall Market and the Lloyds Building and the Gherkin just beyond where high-rise buildings crowd out the sky. Who among the tens of thousands of City workers emerging from their offices in search of air and light make the short journey to the river? For decades it has been made virtually impossible by the traffic fumed canyon that is Lower Thames Street. Yet recently for several weeks we have seen a London free of traffic where people can move on foot or bike without being overwhelmed by noxious fumes. -

Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral

Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral Since London is a Solar City – with St Paul's Cathedral representing the "sun" – we should expect to find evidence of solar rays , the symbolic use of Asherim to depict the radiant, life-sustaining power of the sun. Such a feature would seem to be required by the Babylonian worldview, where Asherim are conceived as conduits of hidden power, visible portals through which the gods radiate their "beneficent" energies into the universe. The spires and towers of 46 churches are aligned with the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, creating 23 "solar rays". I was already familiar with this idea from my research into the monuments of Dublin, where church steeples and other Asherim are aligned in radial fashion around the "sun," the huge modern obelisk known as the Millennium Spire. As it happens, a total of 23 "solar rays" pass through the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, based on the alignment of churches alone . Thus, in the diagram above, two churches sit on each line. If other types of Asherim are included – such as obelisks, monoliths, columns and cemetery chapels – the number is substantially greater.
