Recent evidence provided by the Spokane Fire Department and the Spokane Regional Health District indicate an alarming increase in heroin overdoses in our community. Unfortunately, Spokane seems to be reflecting a national trend of increased heroin use. According to a report released in June by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, heroin use in the United States has reached the highest level in 20 years. The question is: Why the increased use of a drug that is highly addictive and so deadly?

The answer is complex. Some suggest that the rise of heroin use corresponds to a decrease in the prescription of legal painkillers (opioids). As addiction to legal painkillers has risen, physicians have become more cautious about over prescribing and thus these legal drugs become more difficult to obtain. Addicts then turn to cheap heroin which is readily available in a form that is purer than ever before.

There are those who contend that readily available heroin with increased purity is a direct result of legalized marijuana. In fact, a recent article in the August edition of the Wall Street Journal made that exact connection. Since 2012, when marijuana became legal in Colorado (with other states to follow), the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico saw a 40% decrease in marijuana sales. Why buy pot smuggled in from Mexico when it can be purchased legally right down the block? So, as cunning businessmen, the cartel adapted to market demands by planting vast poppy fields, increasing heroin production 70% and then making it more potent. Instead of smuggling marijuana, heroin now floods across the border to feed our American addiction.

The answer to increased heroin use and drug overdose in our city is complicated. However, the above information further convinces me that we simply do not want to see any more drugs in our Cathedral neighborhood. Some time ago, the Parish Pastoral Council formed an ad hoc committee chaired by Tim Coyle to take the lead on efforts to rid the neighborhood of legalized marijuana sales. Tim continues to work city and state officials on behalf of the Cathedral and I am grateful for his efforts. It has been frustrating, but we are not going to give up - the safety and wellbeing of our parishioners, neighbors and fellow citizens are too important. We will continue to keep the parish posted as progress unfolds.

Until then, let us invoke the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes as I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Darrin Connall Rector

There will also be a program for children needing to prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Families may now register their children for Sacramental Preparation at the Cathedral by visiting the Cathedral’s website, http://www.spokanecathedral.com. Bishop Daly will offer the Mass of Confirmation and First Holy Communion on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. First confessions will be Saturday, December 17, 2016.

An information session for parents will take place on Sunday, September 18th in the lower level of the Cathedral following the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses. First Friday

This coming Friday, September 2nd, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last Sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass.

V OLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Crosswalk is a the only shelter in downtown Spokane specifically geared towards homeless & at-risk teens. Their programs include counseling, providing clothing & basic hygienic necessities including showers, tutoring & school drop-out prevention programs, transportation, emergency housing, life- skills, parenting classes for young mothers, and more. They dedicate themselves to serving these kids aged 13-17 and are desperately trying to provide the care needed to break the cycle of youth homelessness.

For many years, Parishioners at the Cathedral have helped this shelter by providing a simple meal for 20 kids on the first Sunday of every month. Unfortunately, the number of volunteers has dwindled over time, and is now down to 2 or 3 families to provide 12 meals per year. Meals can be easy, such as pizza, frozen lasagna, chili, etc. and you are not required to stay and serve; you can just cook the meal and drop it off! If you are not financially able to contribute but still want to help, the Cathedral Poor Fund will reimburse you for the cost of the dinner. Please consider volunteering for this important mission. For further information, call Marilyn Jans at (509) 448-0999.

In response to the Church’s ongoing mission of evangelization, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will be offering a program of instruction for those interested in the Catholic Faith and in living a full sacramental life within the Church. This program may be of interest to the unbaptized, or to the baptized non-Catholic Christians who wish to become fully initiated into the . Classes will begin Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 am in the Ribble Center. For more information or to register for classes, please contact Deacon John Sicilia at 358-4290 or [email protected]. Cathedral Security

In response to a spike in crime on our Cathedral Campus, a security officer was hired to provide protection during the summer months. Officer Ben Moller from the firm GoJoe Patrol guards the building during the week. His presence has allowed us to keep the doors unlocked and open to visitors, tourists, and parishioners seeking some time to pray. Fewer people are camping in the stairwells and there have been no disturbances at Mass. Maintenance Staff indicate that things Officer Ben Moller & Father Connall seem “calmer” around the campus and there is a noticeable decrease in the presence of trash, needles, and human feces. No damage has been done to the Cathedral, the donation boxes have not been looted, and there have been no instances of any crime. As the summer comes to an end the Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council will be meeting soon to review security issues on campus and to develop a permanent plan going forward. Thank you to Officer Ben for helping to keep us safe! A Spiritual Journey to Croatia Fun with Friends “First Friday Imagine yourself on an enjoyable and faith-filled 12- day journey through the beautiful cities, villages, and Pinochle” countryside of Croatia and the Adriatic Coast! The First Reading in today’s Holy Scripture is from the Old Testament Book of Sirach. At times this Bible book has also been called the Wisdom of Sirach. Similar to Proverbs, Sirach is a series of teachings recorded between 200 and 175 BC.

The first verse of this reading captures one of the key elements of stewardship. It says, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.” The word “humility” literally means “of the earth” or in a phrase which might mean more to us “down to earth.” The good steward realizes that he or she receives everything from a loving and generous God. That can be a humbling recognition.

“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less,” is how the eminent author and theologian C.S. Lewis put it. We are important in the eyes of God. Jesus emptied Himself in our behalf. He was humility incarnate. Washing the feet of His Apostles, He comes to us at every Mass in common bread and wine.

If we practice and pursue stewardship as a way of life, we choose to let others be more important; we are not controlling; we support others in silent ways. Are you willing to let God take charge of your life? Being a steward means that. That is the message from Sirach, and it is a message given us by Jesus over and over.
