Types of Feminism •Radical Feminism • Most radical feminists believe the traditional familial roles is vehemently sexist and should be rejected as a whole. •Socialist Feminism • Sees the oppression of women as identical to Marxist theory about exploitation, oppression and labor. Socialist Feminists believed that Prostitution, childcare, domestic works were ways women were exploited by patriarchal society •Cultural Feminism • Encourages traditional feminine behavior over masculine behavior. •Liberal Feminism • Focused on the removal of political and legal forms of discrimination (voter rights, reproductive rights, salary equity for men and women) A Historical Perspective (1700’s) • Women in the 1700’s were fed up with the conditions they faced prior to the French revolution.

  • Taking the Ideal out of the Thin Ideal Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree
Taking the Ideal out of the Thin Ideal Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Julianne C. Wojno, B.A. Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2015 Thesis Committee: Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, Advisor Dr. Nancy Rhodes Copyright by Julianne C. Wojno 2015 Abstract For years, scholars have studied the mass media’s impact on adolescent female body image. Studies have shown that the images of the “perfect body,” also known as the “thin ideal” adolescents see in the media negatively impacts body dissatisfaction and self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to test an entertainment education intervention with the goal of counteracting these negative effects. It tested the idea that the thin ideal’s perfect image could be debunked through showing adolescents the pain and suffering that these models go through in attempting to achieve this ideal body. The idea was that adolescents would see that the models’ lives are not all glamour and grace, but instead plagued with eating disorders and mental distress. The investigation hoped that seeing this new image would help protect the adolescents from negative effects. The study predicted that after seeing the reality behind the thin ideal, one’s self-discrepancy between her perception of her actual-self and her ideal-self would decrease, self-esteem would increase, and body dissatisfaction would decrease. After running a three-part experiment to test these ideas, however, the hypotheses were not supported. ii Acknowledgements For supporting my growth in knowledge of communication theory, experimentation methodology, and statistical analyses, a thank you to the great Dr.

Beyonce performs at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards on August 24, 2014. Jason LaVeris—FilmMagic/Getty Images Are You a Feminist? First-Year Seminar T/Th 10:20 - 11:40 285 Court Street *** Dr. Lauren Silber Shapiro Center for Writing 116 Mt. Vernon Street, Rm. 301 [email protected] Office hours: T/Th 1:15-2:15 and by appointment (schedule in person or via email) Course Description On December 13, 2013 Beyoncé surprised the world by dropping her fifth studio album, and her first audio-visual album, entitled Beyoncé, without warning. Three years later, Beyoncé premiered Lemonade, her sixth studio album that, like Beyoncé, was accompanied with full visuals. These visual albums brought forth a politically minded and certainly more personally grounded Beyoncé with songs about the female orgasm, quickies in a limo, adultery, gun violence, and black Southern US identities. As the world came to learn every song by heart, they also began to debate the significance of Beyoncé’s claims to feminism and her attempts to highlight the black experience in the US. These debates were shaped by Beyoncé’s inclusion of the literary arts in her work: On “Flawless” one of the most popular tracks of Beyoncé, Nigerian-American author, Chimamanda Adichie’s TedTalk “We Should All be Feminists” is sampled; and throughout Lemonade’s visual interludes Beyoncé is heard reading the work of Kenyan-born, Somali poet residing in Britain, Warsan Shire. Taking our cue from Beyoncé and the debates her music has produced, this course investigates the meaning of feminism by considering how writers, artists, activists, academics and public and academic intellectuals discuss the topic.
