WALLACE (WALLY) MACINNES Wally was a valued member of PFC’s Advisory Council until his passing on July 23, 2013.

As a passionate and enthusiastic volunteer, Wally supported PFC’s projects and programs, particularly the Building Playgrounds and Communities Program. He was committed to ensuring that Calgary families had access to free recreational opportunities in their communities.

His contributions to the PFC team are missed and we were honoured to have had the opportunity to work with him.

ROTARY/MATTAMY GREENWAY PATRONS COUNCIL | 7 ROTARY/MATTAMY GREENWAY

Construction of the Greenway in 2013 was very successful despite the devastating floods in June.

Design work for the CN Rail crossing in phase 1 proceeded and construction is anticipated to be complete by late 2014 or early 2015.

The wetland boardwalks in phase 2 were constructed and the connecting pathways will be complete in 2014.

Construction of phase 3, the final phase of the Greenway, began in the fall of 2013. The Aspen Link (Sarcee Trail) section will be complete in 2014. With 39 kilometers of existing pathway in phase 3, manufacturing of the directional signage and seating nodes began and will be installed in 2014.

Having Calgary’s Rotary Clubs and Mattamy Homes partner as naming sponsors of the Greenway was a significant contributing factor to the project’s success. A large Rotary/Mattamy Greenway cairn was unveiled at the event announcing the partnership.

Next year holds many challenges as well as countless opportunities for success for the Rotary/ Mattamy Greenway. Design development will continue for Airport Trail as well as the Inland Field pathways, both of which are expected to be tendered and awarded in 2014 for 2015 construction. There will also be continued development, promotion and planning of pathway amenities and in- kind construction by our developer partners.

8 | ROTARY/MATTAMY GREENWAY ROTARY/MATTAMY GREENWAY PATHWAY CONSTRUCTION | 9 BIO-ENERGY PARK

A master plan was completed for the Bio-Energy Park project. The master plan was jointly funded by the City of Calgary Council Innovation Fund and the Estate of Mario Stella. Guided by a Stakeholder Committee, the Bio-Energy Park project selected Old Refinery Park as a potential test site.

The proposed project would strive to develop a completely sustainable living building - one of only a handful in the world. This world-class research and public education park would test biological processes in the remediation of contaminated land and water.

The development of an innovative park concept that incorporates bio-remediation, sustainable development, recreation and public education has the potential to showcase practices that may be applied locally, nationally and globally.

Looking ahead, we will continue to work with the Stakeholder Committee to identify funding opportunities and necessary approvals required to move the project forward.

10 | BIO-ENERGY PARK BUILDING PLAYGROUNDS AND COMMUNITIES

Parks Foundation Calgary continued to build playgrounds and community capacity across the city. In 2013, 16 playgrounds were built valued at nearly $3.7 million. Since the inception of our grant program in 2009 we have completed 85 play spaces valued at nearly $12 million dollars.

Among the playgrounds built through the program in 2013 was one of the largest playgrounds in Alberta, and the largest ever for the program. The community of Applewood worked with PFC to raise funds and organize more than 130 corporate volunteers to make this large project a reality. This playground will surely become a destination for residents and Calgarians alike.

The communities supported through this program united and took ownership of their playground projects. One of the best success stories of the year was seen in the community of Forest Lawn. An engaged and connected community hosted Playground Day at the new, fully accessible playground in September. As a result of this program there was enhanced community capacity.

Numerous communities are working with PFC to participate in the Building Playgrounds and Communities grant program and Project Gift Administration for 2014. Parks Foundation Calgary will continue to create free and engaging recreational spaces for Calgarians through our successful programs.

BUILDING PLAYGROUNDS AND COMMUNITIES | 11 HORTICULTURAL PROGRAM

During the summer of 2013, the Horticultural Program continued to successfully engage diverse populations through gardening and culinary activities. Despite a decrease in participation from partner organizations impacted by June floods, over 100 participants were engaged in the gardens at Calgary Housing Company (Falconridge) and Enviros, plus Haultain Park and Calgary Rotary Challenger Park.

2013 Partner Organizations: Vantage Enterprises (adults with disabilities), Calgary Society of Community Opportunities (adults with disabilities), Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (senior women), Enviros (young offenders and children with behavioural challenges), Calgary Housing Company (subsidized housing), Stardale (Aboriginal girls), and Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre.

A new garden project was added to the Horticultural Program in 2013. Located in the community of Dover, the Twin Views Communal Garden is situated in an old tennis court revitalized as an innovative gardening space. In partnership with the City of Calgary, the Greater Forest Lawn 55+ Society and residents of Dover, Southview and Forest Lawn, PFC has created the framework for community-led design of this garden space where sustainable food production and inclusive social gathering is the main focus.

Thanks to successful, multi-year funding secured in 2012, we had the opportunity to focus fundraising efforts on the new Twin Views Communal Garden project and other new projects for 2014.

12 | HORTICULTURAL PROGRAM SADDLEDOME AMATEUR SPORT GRANT

Since 1987, Parks Foundation Calgary has facilitated the awarding of more than $10 million in grants to amateur sport organizations in Calgary.

In 2013, there was a 43% increase in the number of new organizations applying for funding which supported our goal of reaching out to new groups.

The following grants totaling $282,800 were awarded in 2013:

Alberta Biathlon Club $7,000 Bishop Carroll High School $10,000 Calgary Tennis Club $30,000 Lake Bonavista Community Association $58,500 Marda Loop Communities Association $52,000 Netball Alberta $7,000 Nose Creek Sports and Recreation Association $100,000 Strathcona-Christie-Aspen Community Association $18,300

SADDLEDOME AMATEUR SPORT GRANT PROGRAM | 13 BENCH DEDICATION PROGRAM

The bench dedication program continued to be popular with Calgarians wishing to honour their loved ones however 2013 proved to be a challenging year due to the June floods.

Parks Foundation worked with sponsors and the City of Calgary to locate and replace any lost or damaged benches. These benches will be repaired or replaced as needed and returned to as close to their original location as possible. This will be an ongoing process as we enter into 2014.

Although the floods did slow the number of new bench inquiries and interest, PFC worked with donors to sponsor 44 new benches in 2013.

14 | BENCH DEDICATION PROGRAM PROJECT GIFT ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM

Parks Foundation Calgary’s Project Gift Administration program continues to be an important catalyst in creating stronger communities. In 2013 PFC supported 37 community-driven projects through this program. The list below outlines the new projects awarded Project Gift Administration in 2013.

Applewood Playground Highland Adult Fitness Park Applewood Playground Expansion L’Ecole la Mosaique Bowness Indoor Play Area Light of Christ Playground Bowness Playground Revitalization Masters Academy Playground Capitol Hill Community Centre Playground Montgomery Playground Revitalization Chinook Park-Kelvin Grove-Eagle Ridge Community Rideau Park School Playground Association Silver Springs Outdoor Pool Renovation Collingwood School Playground St. Henry’s School Playground Crescent Park Playground St. Joseph Playground Deer Ridge - Yellow Slide Park Westgate Playground Revitalization Forest Lawn - 52nd Street Playground Winston Heights-Mountview Community Garden Hawkwood Community Playground Redevelopment

PROJECT GIFT ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM | 15 CONCEPTUAL DRAWING GRANT

CONCEPTUAL DRAWING GRANT Projects aimed at enhancing parks, pathways, playgrounds, natural areas and open spaces in Calgary are eligible for a conceptual drawing grant of up to $5,000. A conceptual drawing by a landscape architect is often an important first step in realizing a project. In 2013, arksP Foundation Calgary awarded four conceptual drawing grants to the following projects:

Calgary Mountain Bike Skills Park Calgary Rotary Challenger Park Garden Hoffer Park Garden Sunalta Community Centre

16 | CONCEPTUAL DRAWING GRANT JACK LESLIE YOUTH ENVIRONMENT AWARD

Every year, two schools receive grants of $1000 towards projects that benefit the environment. This program is made possible because of the partnership between Youth Central, the Leslie family, The City of Calgary and Parks Foundation Calgary.

FOREST LAWN HIGH SCHOOL Through a partnership with the Wildlife Studies program, the Environment Club, and the Outdoor Leadership students at Forest Lawn, the school is landscaping and creating a native prairie garden to improve the appearance and reputation of the school, while incorporating environmental principles. A gravity fed irrigation system with solar panels and rain barrels will be included, as well the garden will be built on the principles of xeriscaping to help teach the students the importance of resource conservation.

WILLIAM ABERHART To support the sustainability of the William Aberhart athletic program, the school purchased ethical, organic, Canadian made t-shirts for school gym strips instead of the regular t-shirts that have a negative impact on the environment. Purchasing these t-shirts saved 165 lbs of pesticides from being released into the environment. Additionally, for every t-shirt purchased, a tree was planted. As part of the project, students from William Aberhart will visit other schools to speak to them about the ways to change school clothing for the better.

JACK LESLIE YOUTH ENVIRONMENT AWARD | 17 THE ART SMITH AMATEUR SPORT LEGACY FUND

Since 2000, Parks Foundation Calgary and the Calgary Booster Club have partnered to award bursaries to amateur athletes through the Art Smith Amateur Sport Legacy Fund. Art Smith was a great Calgarian and supporter of amateur athletes in the city and this fund continues his legacy.

In 2013, the Art Smith Amateur Sport Legacy Fund awarded bursaries to 10 athletes to support their athletic pursuits.

18 | THE ART SMITH AMATEUR SPORT LEGACY FUND THE JOHN CURRIE AMATEUR SPORT LEGACY FUND

In 1983, Calgary hosted its largest amateur sport competition, the Western Summer games, for which Talisman Centre was designed and built. At the conclusion of the successful event, a Legacy Fund of $250,000 was established to support amateur athletes and amateur sport. Inspired by this commitment to amateur sport, in 2012, a second Legacy Fund was established with the goal of raising $750,000 thus increasing the value of the combined funds to $1million.

The Legacy Fund was renamed The John Currie Amateur Sport Legacy Fund in honour of John Currie, community champion, President of the 1983 Western Canada Summer Games and a key figure in the development and funding of Talisman Centre, the flagship facility of the Games.

In 2013, The John Currie Amateur Sport Legacy Fund provided $10,000 in bursary awards to 12 amateur athletes with financial need training in Calgary, to support their training and competition needs in pursuit of their athletic goals.
