Doggerland by Jo Bell Doggerland was a land bridge connecting Great Britain to mainland Europe during the last Ice Age which was flooded by rising sea levels over eight thousand years ago. Read through the first stanza of the following poem. As you are reading, make a note of any words or phrases that you don’t understand. How can you find out what they mean? Out from Cromer in an easy sea, Pilgrim Lockwood cast his nets and fetched up a harpoon. Twelve thousand years had blunted not one barb. An antler sharpened to a spike, a bony bread knife from a time of glassy uplands and no bread: Greetings from Doggerland, it said. Once you have found out the meaning of any unknown phrases, have a go at the tasks below: 1) Carry out some research and then create an informative poster or non- chronological report about Doggerland for a 10 year old child. Remember to think about the exciting features that would help to make your poster or report fun to read: bright colours; interesting styles of writing; did you know boxes; lift the flap or pop-ups; and pictures. 2) Write a story that takes place on Doggerland. You could base your story on the flood that left it underwater or on something that happened during an earlier time. Remember that it was flooded during the end of the Stone Age, so your characters would need to be Stone Age hunter-gatherers (no guns or tanks allowed!) 3) Create a comic strip or stop motion animation about the discovery of the sharpened antler harpoon, as talked about in the poem. In order to do this, you will need to find out more about Pilgrim Lockwood, how the antler was found and what its discovery led to. .
