Any errors, of course remain my own. 1 Filming female desire: Queering the gaze of pop music videos Abstract This paper examines the queer gaze within pop music videos. It contends that the contemporary US musician Hayley Kiyoko can be seen as a queer music video auteur who has transformed what the ‘gaze’ can mean in mainstream pop music through directing her own videos. The paper asserts that through her performance within and, arguably even more significantly, via her direction of videos, Kiyoko has produced a new and complex portrayal of how female sexual desire is represented even when, on the surface, it may not necessarily appear to disrupt normativity. Reaction videos made by Kiyoko’s fans have also queered the gaze whereby the ‘watcher’ becomes the ‘watched’. The paper concludes that online spaces and digital technologies are radically reshaping understandings of queer sexuality in music videos.

Girls disregard their teacher’s advice about academics because they rightly perceive that their school’s in-class academics have little or no influence on their chances for success on university and junior college entrance exams. Girls argue that their high school education is tedious because it relies on rote memorization, and boring in-class lectures that bear no explicit relationship to the college entrance exams that determine their futures. Girls pursue educational opportunities outside of their school in the form of cram schools, self-study, one-on-one tutoring, and group study. The school reinforces the girls’ negative views of in-class education by offering after-school cram classes focused upon entrance exam materials, and by allowing seniors in-school time to prepare for university entrance exams.

A straightforward, constant reminder of how few gay men there are around me. Even if I expand the mileage radius, even if I say I’m down with dating an 80-year-old, the message is the same: “There’s no one new around you.” I’ve been staring at these words since I moved to Blacksburg over two years ago. After some time, they began to shift around and create new meaning: There’s no one new around you. There’s no one around you. There’s no one. There’s you. There’s you. You are here. You exist in this heteronormative realm of Virginia Tech. But how? How do you exist? How do you date on campus (pg. 29)? How do you find safe spaces (pg. 24)?     To the uninitiated, the whole story might seem unexpected… Closing out 2016 and kicking off 2017, singer, songwriter, director, actress, and rising popstar Hayley Kiyoko headlined the two-part “One Bad Night” Tour in support of her critically acclaimed debut EP, Citrine. Even though it would be her first proper headline run, every single date sold out. In cities across the country, lines stretched around the block as fans signed rainbow flags to share with the artist during meet-and-greets where they took copious notes and asked deep questions about her vision—down to color palette choices and production. Just under the radar, a welcoming community rallied around her art and only blossomed bigger by the show. “What I realized is it’s bigger than me,” she says. “The fans care about each other, they care about me, and they also care about the art.
