The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

The research conveys Melanchthon’s mediating influence in disputes between Reformation churches, in particular between the German churches and King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1539. The political background to those events is presented in detail, so that Melanchthon’s place in this history can be better understood. This is not a study of Melanchthon’s overall theology. In this work, I have shown how the Saxons and the conservative and reform-minded English considered matters of conscience and adiaphora. I explore the German and English unification discussions throughout the negotiations delineated in this dissertation, and what they respectively believed about the Church’s authority over these matters during a tumultuous time in European history. The main focus of this work is adiaphora, or those human traditions and rites that are not necessary to salvation, as noted in Melanchthon’s Confessio Augustana of 1530, which was translated into English during the Anglo-Lutheran negotiations in 1536. Melanchthon concluded that only rituals divided the Roman Church and the Protestants.

Lilienthal 14 December 2018 I want to express appreciation that these questions were actually brought to me, rather than allowed to fester and cause disruption in the Church. St. Paul wrote to St. Timothy, “Remind [the people] of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers…. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels” (2 Tim. 2:14, 23). When we refer to things that are a matter of choice or tradition, things neither commanded nor forbidden in Scripture, we call these things “adiaphora” (AH-dee-ah-for-ah). The form of worship (or liturgy) as well as the hymns, the rites and ceremonies, the vestments and paraments and church decorations and furniture, are all just such adiaphora. However, using the term “adiaphora” does not mean we should be indifferent about such things. Calling a thing “adiaphoron” is the beginning of the conversation. Once a thing is determined to be adiaphoron, it is the responsibility of the church to decide the best way to do a thing, so that God’s Word and Sacraments may be given central importance in communicating Christ and his grace to the people of God. For this purpose, the office of the pastoral ministry is put in place, to lead the congregation by preaching the Word and administering the Sacraments. When questions are asked about “why” a thing is done a certain way, it is important for the Pastor to be able to answer that question.
