Pest Profile Photo credit: Tom Murray, Bugguide.net Common Name: Lilac Leafminer Scientific Name: Caloptilia syringella Order and Family: Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae Size and Appearance: Length (mm) Appearance Egg -Found in between leaf layers, may appear as small raised spot on the leaf Larva/Nymph -Pale yellow or green in color 5-7mm -Dark green stomach and light yellowish brown head Adult -Bodies have some light and dark brown striping 6-7mm -At rest the moth will fold its wings tube-like over its body -Wingspan of 10-13mm -Forewings: golden brown or bray with various dark edged whitish-yellow markings -Hindwings: dark brown Pupa (if applicable -Can be found buried 1-2” in the soil Type of feeder (Chewing, sucking, etc.): Chewing Host plant/s: Lilac bushes but occasionally Ash trees. Description of Damage (larvae and adults): The lilac leafminer larvae will produce a blotch mine on the foliage and when older they will roll and tie the leaf with silk. The larvae and adults will continue to feed on the leaves from within the tied leaf. Occasionally, leafminer populations will get to damaging numbers but typically they only infest a few leaves.
