Arizona State Vice President for University Athletics and Athletics Director Ray Anderson signed Jones to a contract that will keep him at ASU until 2021. A former Sun Devil, Jones was a three-time All-American and national runner-up as a collegiate wrestler, as well as a member of the 1988 ASU national championship team. An Olympic silver medalist himself, Jones served as head coach of the United States Freestyle Wrestling Team, coaching U.S. Olympians in the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2016 Olympic games. Jones led his alma mater to its 18th Pac-10/12 championship (20th conference title including two Western Athletic Conference titles) in 2018 behind six individual champions in Ali Naser (133), Jason Tsirtsis (149), Josh Shields (157), Anthony Valencia (165), Zahid Valencia (174), and Kordell Norfleet (184). The Sun Devils also earned their highest finish (10th) at NCAA’s since 2011 in 2017-18. He has won four World Cup Gold medals and was selected The World’s Most Technical Wrestler, one of only three Americans ever to receive the award, by United World Wrestling, the international governing body for the sport of wrestling. Jones was Anderson’s first coaching hire, starting a long line of highly touted coaching hires at Arizona State that includes the likes of Bob Bowman (men’s and women’s swimming), Bobby Hurley (men’s bas- ketball), and Cliff English (women’s triathlon). “It is important we retain our high-caliber coaching hires and, without a doubt, Coach Jones has made a huge impact in his three years at Arizona State,” says Anderson. Already building an impressive resume at the ASU helm, Jones’ first full recruiting class, including heavy- weight Tanner Hall and brothers Zahid and Anthony Valencia, was tabbed the No. 1 recruiting class by D1CollegeWrestling.Net, FloWrestling, Intermat, and WIN Magazine. He continues to attract the nation’s top student-athletes, adding for 2018-19 the likes of Jacori Teemer, five-time New York state champion and Mason Smith, two-time NCAA qualifier from Central Michigan. In just three and a half years, he has also signed five No. 1 recruits in their perspective weights and eight that were ranked in the top 10 pound for pound. In addition, the Sun Devils have added eight cadet and junior world team members since Jones arrived. Academics have also been a high priority with Jones at the helm as several members of the current roster are part of Barrett Honors College, one of the nation’s top honors colleges. 6 Coaching Staff LEE PRITTS CHRIS JAMILL KELLY ASSISTANT COACH PENDELTON ASSISTANT COACH ASSISTANT COACH - Named assistant coach on July 30, - Joined Sun Devil staff in May 2018 - Named assistant coach on Sept. 4, 2014 2012 - 2004 Olympic silver medalist in Athens, - Served as USAW assistant coach at Greece - Served as USA Wrestling assistant Women’s Freestyle Pan-American Cham- pionships coach at 2017 and 2018 Cadet World -Two-time World Team member, four-time Championships US National Team member - Coached six conference champion teams - Considered one of top recruiters in the - US Open Champion, two-time Pan country American Games silver medalist - Coached 2017 Women’s Senior World Runner-ups - Previous coaching experience: NC - Competed for Oklahoma State (1997- - Two-time NCAA Champion, State, 2000) Missouri, Old Dominion three-time All-American (174 lbs) at Okla- homa State - Most recently coached at Stanford and - Two-time team captain (118 lbs) at NC State Eastern Michigan, made 3 appearanc- - Top-10 wrestler of 2000’s (Intermat) es at NCAA championships, earned All-America - Big-12 All Century Team, 4-time NCAA Team Champion honors (1996) - 3-time USA National Team member 7 2018 International Competition Zahid Valencia competed in Final X in State College, Chad Porter represented the USA on the Greco-Ro- PA, a new set of competitions to decide who will rep- man Junior World Team while Brandon Courtney was a resent the United States on the Senior World Team. finalist for the Junior World Freestyle Team. • Cultivating Identity and the Music of Ultimate Fighting
CULIVATING IDENTITY AND THE MUSIC OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING Luke R Davis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Megan Rancier, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2012 Luke R Davis All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Megan Rancier, Advisor In this project, I studied the music used in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events and connect it to greater themes and aspects of social study. By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding. Lastly, this project built upon the above- mentioned issues of identity and nationality to appropriately discuss aspects of how the UFC attempts to depict fighter character to create a “good vs.

  • Dos Santos Has a Chance to Grow, Develop from Loss
dos Santos has a chance to grow, develop from loss Author : Robert D. Cobb Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos learned a lot in his title fight with Cain Velasquez at UFC 155. I hope dos Santos paid attention because Velasquez put the blueprint to regaining his title right in front of him. Velasquez dominated from start to finish -- he won every round convincingly. Dos Santos learned he needs to become a better all-around fighter -- Velasquez is a better grappler, wrestler and, Saturday, was a better striker. Velasquez was able to mix up his strikes to take dos Santos down at will. The latter was the most-surprising; until this fight, dos Santos was widely-regarded as the best striker in the division. He has 10 victories by TKO or KO. Simply put, Velasquez proved himself the better fighter by showing more diversity in his game. Against most heavyweight fighters dos Santos doesn't need to be great at more than one aspect of the cage but against top-level fighters, heavy hands aren't always enough. He became champion without becoming a great wrestler -- partly because the depth of skill set at heavyweight is not as good as other divisions and partly because his striking is so dynamic. He showed that in the first fight with Velasquez, when he knocked him out early in the first round. 1 / 2 In a bout with talented submission artist Frank Mir and a separate fight with Roy Nelson, dos Santos stalked them around the ring with his fists. This time, Velasquez did the stalking.
