There are a batch of reviews on Amazon written by parents of two-year-olds, and in Guess Again! reviews, those parents are a bit up in arms about the way that this book misled their children. Guess Again! is what separate kids from little kids, and subversion of expectations is one of the fundaments of humor. You ever notice how little kids can't make up jokes? Until small children develop a Guess Again! vocabulary of expectations and consequences, they don't really understand humor. Although - don't email me - they are certainly funny people. And laugh at funny things. It's just that they're busy populating their cause-and- effect encyclopedia, and when you get in the way of that, they don't. I remember Guess Again! extremely pissed off at Pippi Longstocking and ooh, that's a nice edition of Pippi, illustrated by Lauren Child? Match made in heaven! But once they are well on Guess Again! way to getting a firm grasp on what you can expect from the universe, you get a little leeway. Bark, Georgeis my favorite example of a funny book for a three-year-old. Guess Again! the first book of subverted expectations that a little kid will "get". The vet asks puppy George to bark, and George says "Quack. Did you see that? Dogs don't say 'quack,' they're supposed to say 'woof'! And he says 'quack' because there's a duck down his throat! How did that duck get down there! Wow my mind is totally blown right now. Read it again. But little kids are like Mork, I swear. But a six-year old, and certainly a seven year old? Oh crap did I forget to compliment the art? I love the art. It's Adam Rex, people. Composition, color, watercolor technique, expression Adam Rex can paint an argyle sweater and give it personality and depth.

    CONCORDANCE OF TRANSLATIONS AND VERSIONS OF RUMI’S QUATRAINS PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH By Ibrahim Gamard www.dar-al-masnavi.org February 2008 This concordance is the result of many years of study of the Quatrains of Jalaluddin Rumi. It is designed for use on computer word processing programs which have word- search capacity. It includes quatrains rendered into English from 48 published works. Quatrains can be most easily found via a search for the opening words of the first lines, which are include here. Other renderings of the same quatrain can then be found by a search using the quatrain number (usually “F xxx”-- meaning “Foruzanfar xxx”). If an “F” number is not found, then a check should be made using another system of quatrain numbers (commonly used in popular books containing quatrains attributed to Rumi: “Isf xxx”-- meaning Isfahan xxx”). In 1985, I began a collaborative translation of the Quatrains of Rumi together with Prof. Ravan Farhadi, an Afghan scholar of classical sufi texts. This was finally published in 2008 as “The Quatrains of Rumi”, a book of 754 pages that includes the Persian text, explanatory notes, and translations of the nearly 2,000 quatrains in Vol. 8 of Foruzanfar’s authentic edition based on the earliest manuscripts of quatrains attributed to Mawlânâ Rumi. Over the years, I have been collecting and adding references to previous translations and versions into English. In cases where no references were listed for quatrains in some of the popular books, I did English word searches using our complete translations on my computer, and succeeded in finding links to Persian texts for most of them.

    Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption.
