23. Paddle Raise

The paddle raise is a chance for you to help provide students with an opportunity to participate in Goodman’s Education and Community Engagement programs. The funds raised from the paddle raise will help provide:

• One Chicago Public High School class the opportunity to participate in one Goodman Theatre Student Subscription Series matinee • One college student the opportunity to participate in Goodman’s internship program • One young woman the opportunity to participate in the Cindy Bandle Young Critics Circle

Here’s how it works: The auctioneer will call out funding levels of $1,500, $1,000, and $500. When you hear the amount that you wish to donate, simply raise your paddle until the Auctioneer calls your number.

Student Subscription Series As the centerpiece of the Goodman’s Education and Community Engagement initiatives, this program partners with more than 30 Chicago area high schools to provide professional development in arts integration techniques to teachers and to expose over 2,700 students each year to live theater. Offered free of charge, the program has served as a national model for arts in education for over 25 years.

InteInteInternshipInternship Program College students and recent graduates join the Goodman’s staff each season and are mentored by leaders in the field. Through hands-on learning in production, literary, stage management, development, education, marketing, and casting, interns develop self-efficacy. Weekly forums with staff members and guest artists allow interns to explore both the structure of the Goodman and the theater’s place in the local and national theater community. The Goodman mentors approximately 45 interns annually and over the last several seasons approximately 50% of Goodman new hires have been former Goodman interns.

Cindy Bandle Young Critics Designed to increase participation in arts journalism among 11th grade girls, 25 Young Critics annually join professional journalists on opening nights, interview Goodman artists and publish reviews and features online and in community newspapers. Through a partnership with the Association for Women Journalists, the young women are mentored by working journalists throughout the school year who critique their writing, help develop professional portfolios, and introduce the craft of broadcast and written theater criticism.
