MdHi Accession #1846.1.1 Howard received a medal and the thanks of Congress in recognition of his valor during the Battle of Cowpens, January 17, 1781. Howard later served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, as Governor of Maryland (1788-1791), and as United States Senator from Maryland (1796-1803). Several rich collections of Howard family papers donated to the Maryland Historical Society are held in its Manuscripts Division.
