But from the 14th to the 19th century Norway was considered by other Europeans to be remote and belonging to the backwaters of Europe. Some daring travel- ers came in the Romantic era, and one of them wrote: The fantastic pillars and arches of fairy folk-lore may still be descried in the deep secluded glens of Thelemarken, undefaced with stucco, not propped by unsightly modern buttress. The harp of popular minstrelsy – though it hangs mouldering and mildewed with infrequency of use, its strings unbraced for want of cunning hands that can tune and strike them as the Scalds of Eld – may still now and then be heard sending forth its simple music. Sometimes this assumes the shape of a soothing lullaby to the sleep- ing babe, or an artless ballad of love-lorn swains, or an arch satire on rustic doings and foibles. Sometimes it swells into a symphony descriptive of the descent of Odin; or, in somewhat less Pindaric, and more Dibdin strain, it recounts the deeds of the rollicking, death-despising Vikings; while, anon, its numbers rise and fall with mysterious cadence as it strives to give a local habitation and a name to the dimly seen forms and antic pranks of the hol- low-backed Huldra crew.” (From The Oxonian in Thelemarken, or Notes of Travel in South-Western Norway in the Summers of 1856 and 1857, written by Frederick Metcalfe, Lincoln College, Oxford.) This was a typical Romantic way of describing a foreign culture.

Contemporary organ repertoire An introduction to the organ works of Kjell Mørk Karlsen By James D. Hicks lessed with a natural environment of Bstunning, rugged beauty and a cul- ture rich in poetic expression, Norway is also celebrated for its musical heritage. A country that could produce a composer of the stature of Edvard Grieg can also claim composers who have made a sig- nifi cant contribution to the repertoire for the organ. A vibrant school of new music fl ourishes in Norway, and the Oslo-based composer Kjell Mørk Karlsen has fash- ioned a diverse and notable body of work over the course of a distinguished career. Karlsen is a prolifi c artist whose output includes ten orchestral symphonies and eleven oratorios, along with numerous cantatas, concertos, and chamber music. Andreas, who was born in Oslo (Norway) but grew up in Hamburg (Germany) and San Francisco (California), and who made his living as a writer/journalist traveling around the US, Asia, Spain and the Caribbean while composing his ‘comeback’ The Guest, has seen himself as a global citizen since childhood. The album’s title grew out of his steadily growing concern for the world around him, and for where we’re all headed. As the pandemic hit, the title suddenly became all the more relevant, with the urgent need for safety while chaos rages outside. However, this music is not about the physical dimension, for those lucky enough to be able to provide themselves with walls. It is about building a good place for listeners to exist and/or escape to, wherever they may be. MARISS JANSONS Mariss Jansons ranks among the outstanding podium personalities of our time. His orchestral work is recognized not only because of his busy touring activities but also because of television and radio broadcasts world-wide, also documented by a sizable number of recordings. Mariss Jansons has been the Chief Conductor of the Chor und Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks since 2003. After six exceptionally successful seasons, his contract was renewed until 2015. Mariss Jansons succeeds Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis and Lorin Maazel as the fifth Chief Conductor of these two eminent ensembles. In 2004, Mariss Jansons also assumed the post of Chief Conductor of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam as the sixth Chief Conductor succeeding Willem Kes, Willem Mengelberg, Eduard van Beinum, Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Chailly. Born in 1943 in the Latvian capital of Riga, Mariss Jansons grew up in the Soviet Union as the son of conductor Arvid Jansons. He studied violin, viola and piano and graduated with honors from the Leningrad Conservatory with a degree in conducting. Studies in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky and in Salzburg with Herbert von Karajan followed. In 1971, Mariss Jansons emerged as a prize winner from the conducting competition of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation in Berlin. He was decisively influenced by the legendary Russian conductor Evgeny Mravinsky, who brought Mariss Jansons to the Leningrad Philharmonic as his assistant in 1971. Thereafter Mariss Jansons was closely associated with this orchestra, today’s St. Petersburg Philharmonic, until 1999 as regular conductor and led the orchestra during this period on tours world-wide.
