Intern ational Introduction to Quickstep

General International Quickstep is in the smooth ballroom category of along with , , Slow and . The Quickstep is a and characterized by movement across the floor, locks and chassiés. Because the is fast the steps are not long and the rise is normally quick. To keep from tiring quickly while dancing the Quickstep, the dancer must be light on the feet and make maximum use of the ankles during rise and fall.

Musical Timing The musical timing for International Quickstep is 4/4 rhythm at 48 to 50 bars (measures) per minute. Most routines, in round dancing, use 46 to 48 bars per minute. Slowing the speed much more than that will cause the routine to become very heavy and tiring to dance. The step timing uses "slows" (S) and "quicks" (Q). A “slow step" uses one half a bar of music or two beats. A "quick step" uses one beat.

Dance Position The dance positions used in the International Quickstep are standard as for all swing dances.

Footwork The footwork for the International Quickstep is standard with the swing dances. A forward step that initiates rise is on the heel then rises to the toe. A step while up or continuing to rise is on the toe. A step with lowering action is on the toe lowering to the heel. A backing step with "rise" normally has no foot rise and is on the toe and rolling to the heel. The rise is through the body.

Rise and Fall These are the general rules for rise and fall in the Quickstep:

Forward Turns: Step 1. Rise at the end of step 1 Step 2. Up on step 2

Backward Turns: Step 1. Rise at the end of step 1 with no foot rise Step 2. Up on step 2 with foot rise

Exception to the above rules: Quarter Turns, Progressive Chassés, Forward and Backward Locks: These steps continue to rise on steps 2 and 3. The dancer is up on 4. This action requires the use of the knees in rise and fall.

Most figures use a quick rise on step one.

The lowering action begins, from an up posture, on the toe of the supporting foot. The dancer lowers to the heel of that foot as the moving foot collects under the body and is about to move onto the next step.

QS - Intro - 1 Introduction (continued) Intern ational Quickstep

As the tempo of the music increases, the bending and straightening of the knees decrease, therefore the rise and fall will be less. When the tempo becomes faster, the steps become shorter. To help with the rise and fall (and the dance) the dancer must maintain the feet and knees compactly under the hips. Develop a feeling of the knees working toward each other so the feet will not spread out. Keep the action on the ball of the foot. Do not get "flat footed". Keep the ankles flexible and springy to add lightness to the dance.

The following is the explanation of some terms used for Rise and Fall:

Rise at the end of 1 (rise E01) The rise begins immediately when transferring the weight to the supporting foot.

Up on 2 - The dancer attains the maximum rise on the second step.

Continue to Rise on 2 - The rise is still occurring and is not complete.

Continue to Rise on 3 - The rise is still occurring and is not complete.

Up on 3 - The dancer attains the maximum rise on the third step.

Up on 4, etc. - The dancer attains the maximum rise on the fourth, etc., step.

Lower at the end of 3, etc. - The foot lowers to the heel as the weight is fully transferred on the third, etc., step and the moving leg collects under the body.

Amounts of Turn There are two amounts of turn noted in the Figure Descriptions. One is the amount of turn made by the foot. If different from the amount of turn the body makes, this information will be in the "Technique" column. The other is the amount of turn that the body makes on a given step. This information is in the "Amount of Turn" column. While dancing some figures, the feet will make more turn than the body on a particular step. Usually the body catches up on the next step. We note this by the term "Body Turns Later".

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed dance position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Back left in CBMP and banjo position. Taking weight, start to rise. [Step 2.] Back right on the toe, with the right shoulder leading. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Lock the left foot in front of the right, on the toe. The right shoulder remains leading. Continue to rise. [Step 4.] Back right, on the toe, with the right shoulder leading. As the left leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

LADY Start in closed dance position moving DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right foot in CBMP and banjo, heel leading. As your weight moves to the toe, start to rise. [Step 2.] Forward left, on the toe, with a left shoulder leading. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Lock the right foot behind the left, on the toe. The left shoulder remains leading while you continue to rise. [Step 4.] Forward left, on the toe, left shoulder leading. As the right leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

When traveling backward, the locking foot will always cross in front. The opposite is true when moving forward.

Although the figure is traveling DLW throughout, the man's body should be almost COH. The lady is opposite and both should have a shoulder leading.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in SCP DLC. [Step 1.] Softening both knees step thru to DLC on the right foot, heel to toe, a long step. [Step 2.] Lead the lady across toward COH, in response to the lady’s movement, swivel to the left on the ball of the right foot, to , keeping the knees together and the left foot behind the right (no change of weight on this count). [Step 3.] Cross the left foot well behind the right taking weight on the ball of the left foot then rise continuing to turn to the left. Retain Closed Position throughout. [Step 4.] Lower as slip the right foot back past the left towards COH [small step back] continuing the body rotation to Closed Position DLW and leaving the left foot extended forward in CBMP.

LADY Start in SCP DLC. [Step 1.] Softening both knees step thru to DLC on the left foot, heel to ball, a long step. [Step 2.] Step quickly forward and side on the right foot toward COH, crossing in front of the man to Closed Position. [Step 3.] Spin to the left on the right toe in response to the man’s rise and body rotation, closing the left foot to the right without weight (no change of weight on this count). [Step 4.] Continue turning to the left on the right toe [left foot skimming the floor to increase stability] then lower as slip the left foot forward to Closed Position DRC.

GENERAL NOTES

Although this figure only has three steps for each member of the partnership, the asymmetric timing suggests a division in four parts rather than the conventional SQQ or SSS. When learning this figure, it may help the understanding of its asymmetry to think of the actions as “we go, she go, he go, we go”.

[Step 3.] Completing 3/4 LF turn on the ball of the right foot step forward left to Closed Position DRW;

GENERAL NOTES

The Chair may also be danced using SSS timing.

In Round Dancing, the may impose variations in the poise of the “Chair”. The standard poise has the weight distributed evenly over the entire foot but a more forward poise may be requested in which case the weight would be mostly over the ball and toes of the foot. A more backward poise would require a smaller step with the weight mostly over the heel. In all cases however the upper body would remain erect with no lean or sway.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed dance position moving DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, forward left, heel leading. [Step 2.] Continue turning left face and start the right leg forward. The turn will create a right shoulder lead causing the foot to end on the inside edge of the whole foot. [Step 3.] Swivel left face on the right foot and draw the left to it. The inside edge of the left toe should drag across the floor and the foot will end slightly forward of the right. Use left sway.

LADY Start in closed dance position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, back right, toe heel. [Step 2.] Turning left face move diagonally back left, on the toe, then drop to inside edge of whole foot. The left shoulder should be leading. [Step 3.] Swivel on

QS - Fig 13 - 33 Change of Direction (continued) International Quickstep the left foot and draw the right to it. The inside edge of the right toe should drag across the floor and will end slightly back of the left. Use right sway.

GENERAL NOTES

The most common problem dancing this figure is taking the second step side instead of forward. This causes committing the weight too quickly, to the foot, and will limit the amount of turn. You can easily turn a properly executed change of direction, one half. The timing of the figure is also flexible. You can dance it as two slows instead of the three slows shown in the chart and written description. The third slow drawing action takes place during the second step when using this timing. Also note that there is no rise or lowering action.

LADY Start in CP facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Take a small step to the side on ball of left foot. [Step 2.] Close right to left on ball of foot. [Step 3.] Starting a small step side and back on the left toe. Sway to the left and look well left with a roll effect pivoting right fact on the left foot to face LOD.

GENERAL NOTES

The above describes the basic form of the (natural) Chasse Roll.

The figure can also start with the man's left and the lady's right foot, in which case it will turn to the left and is called a Reverse Chasse Roll. QS – Fig 29 – 71 S#6 2002 Chasse Roll (continued) International Quickstep

Each of these figures have a turning variation, the (natural) Turning Chasse Roll and the Reverse Turning Chasse Roll. These variations generally start from an outside partner position and incorporate a turn into Step 1. The amount of turn is normally 1/8 to the right for the (natural) Turning Chasse Roll and 1/8 to the left for the Reverse Turning Chasse Roll.

GENERAL NOTES

It is important that the man carefully controls the amount of his body turn making sure not to turn more than the lady can and to keep her in front of him. For the same reason the lady’s last step should be a long one. On the next step the man will increase his body turn slightly in order to take his forward step outside his partner.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position ready to move diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Forward left using CBM, heel leading and rise to the toe. [Step 2.] Swaying to the left step side right on the toe. [Step 3.] Maintaining the left sway close the left foot to the right on the toe. As the right leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next figure.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position ready to move backing to diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Back right, using CBM, toe heel. There is rise on this step but as with most backing steps there is no foot rise, only through the body. [Step 2.] Swaying to the right, step side left, on the toe. [Step 3.] Maintaining the right sway close the left foot to the right, on the toe. As the left leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

[Step 4.] Complete a 1/8 left face turn on the right toe and cross the left foot in front of the right on the toe and end facing DRC. Lower to the heel as the next step begins.

GENERAL NOTES

The starting position of the figure will vary as will the amount of turn depending upon the figures preceding and following the Double Reverse.

MAN - Amounts of turn for Seven Eighths and a Full Turn (Three Quarters): 1/4 between 1 and 2. 1/2 between 2 and 3 (Seven Eighths): 3/8 between 1 and 2. 1/2 between 2 and 3. (Full Turn): 3/8 between 1 and 2. 5/8 between 2 and 3. (Full Turn): 1/2 between 1 and 2. 1/2 between 2 and 3.

Maintain body braced upward as the weight is taken on the 2nd step (right foot). Hold lady firmly on the right side throughout the figure.

LADY - The amount of turn may vary for Seven Eighths and a Full Turn. (Three Quarters): 3/8 between 1 and 2. 1/4 between 2 and 3. 1/8 between 3 and 4 (Seven Eighths): 1/2 between 1 and 2. 1/4 between 2 and 3. 1/8 between 3 and 4. (Full Turn): 1/2 between 1 and 2. 3/8 between 2 and 3. 1/8 between 3 and 4.

Maintain body braced upward throughout the figure.

The turn on the ball of the left foot (2nd step) is continued as the right foot (3rd step) is made. The common error is to start moving the right foot forward without continuing the turn on the ball of the left foot.

It is important that the lady create and maintain her own rotation, consistently, throughout the figure.

The next step should be outside partner in Banjo.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position backing DLC. [Step 1.] Turning slightly to the right, back left, on the toe, in CBMP and Banjo. Check the backward movement slightly to change direction. [Step 2] Turning right face cross the right foot in front of the left, on the toe. Use a slight amount of left sway. [Step 3.] Still turning right, back and slightly to the side left, on the toe, a small step. [Step 4.] Back right, on the toe, turning to a right shoulder lead. [Step 5.] Lock the left foot in front of the right, on the toe. There should be the feel of a right shoulder lead. [Step 6.] Back right, on the toe, right shoulder leading. Lower to the heel preparing for the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure progresses DLW. Dancing the figure toward DLW with no turn is also an option. Although there is a checking of movement on step one, it should not stop dead. There is forward movement over the complete figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position moving DLW. [Step 1.] With a slight turn to the right, forward right, heel toe. The foot ends in CBMP outside partner in Banjo. [Step 2.] Maintaining the body position, forward left, on the toe. Left shoulder should now be leading. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Lock the right foot in back of the left, on the toe. There should still be the feel of a left shoulder leading. Continue to rise. [Step 4.] Forward left, QS - Fig 14 - 35 Forward Lock Step (continued) International Quickstep on the toe, then lower to the heel to begin the next figure. Keep the left shoulder leading. The next step should be outside partner in Banjo.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Turning slightly to the right, back left, toe heel. The foot will end in CBMP and Banjo. There will be body rise at the end of the step with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Maintaining body position, back right, on the toe. Right shoulder should now be leading. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Lock the left foot in front of the right, on the toe. There should still be the feeling of a right shoulder leading. Continue to rise. [Step 4.] Back right, toe, then lower to the heel to begin the next figure. Keep the right shoulder leading.

GENERAL NOTES

The figure preceding the forward lock step should end on the left foot with the left shoulder leading for the man. The lady would be opposite. Sometimes we dance this figure beginning with step two. We can do that if the preceding figure ends up on the right toe for the man and left for the lady, turning to the right. Omit step one and dance two, three and four. Remember, step two must have a shoulder lead that you maintain throughout.

[Step 3.] Allowing body to catch up on turn close left continuing to rise and maintaining R sway. [Step 4.] Step side and slightly forward right lowering and dissolving sway at end of step.

GENERAL NOTES

It is important to note that the initial Forward step is not part of the Tipple Chasse. It is only used to allow the figure (steps 2, 3, 4 QQS) to be danced from an initial man’s left (lady’s right) foot lead. Correspondingly, if backing with man’s left (lady’s right) foot free; then a a Back step would be used, and normally cued, prior to the Tipple Chasse.

As the rise and the sway develop progressively in the Tipple Chasse, the head will generally be turned toward the direction of the sway (man and lady).

QS - Fig 20 - 53 S#6 2002 Hesitation Change (continued) International Quickstep

GENERAL NOTES

This figure is a linking figure used to change without changing the lead foot. This figure normally follows a Natural Turn. The amount of turn may vary from 1/8 to 3/8.

MAN Hold body braced upwards on steps 1 and 2 with lady held firmly on the right side. Step 1. The left knee is bent as weight is taken on the left foot. (The right knee is also bent) Step 2. The right knee is retained bent as the right foot is placed in position. Step 3. Both knees are bent. Straighten gradually as the left foot moves forward into the next step. The man’s feet are approximately 8 inches apart and parallel on step 3.

LADY Hold body braced upwards and keep hips well towards man on steps 1 and 2. Normal Closed Position is regained by a slight swivel on the ball of the left foot as the right closes toward left. Step 1. The right knee is bent as weight is taken on the right foot. (The left knee is also bent) Step 2. The left knee is retained bent as the left foot is placed in position. Step 3. Both knees are bent. Straighten gradually as the right foot moves back into the next step.

QS – Fig 49 – 1 S#9 2005 Hinge (continued) International Quickstep

GENERAL NOTES

By using the body rise during count two the man leads the lady to continue the body movement past the right foot and back onto the left. This is opposed to continuing the body rotation on the right, as in a Throwaway Oversway. The Hinge can be danced from various facing directions and from Semi-Closed Position. In the latter case the man, after stepping forward on the right foot, would attempt to turn the lady as square to him as possible before completing the Hinge.

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position backing LOD. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, back right, toe heel. Start to rise; however, the rise is slow over the entire figure. [Step 2.] Continue the left turn with right sway and step side and slightly forward left, on the toe. The toe points so that the foot has turned 3/8 to the left while the body has turned 1/4 left. Continue the slow rise. The right foot will not move toward the left. It will remain almost in place. [Step 3.] Finish the left face turn so that the body catches up with the left foot. Recover back right, on the toe, moving away from the left foot with a right shoulder lead. Lower to the heel to begin the next figure. Usually the next step will be in Banjo with the lady outside partner.

QS - Fig 16 - 39 Hover Corte (continued) International Quickstep

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position moving LOD. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, forward left, heel toe. Follow the man's lead for the amount of rise. [Step 2.] Continuing the left turn with sway to the left start the right leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side on the toe. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Swivel on the right toe to complete the turn and step diagonally forward left, on the toe, left shoulder leading. After taking weight, lower to the heel to begin the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES

Although the rise for this figure begins on step one, it will be gradual and spread over the entire figure. An attempt to stay very low until almost taking weight for step two will make this easier to accomplish. Do not try to complete the rising action above normal dance height or step three will end with a "dropping action". Step three should not be a definite drop, but a lowering or compression into the next figure. The figure, as depicted in the chart, calls for dancing it "SSS". We could dance it over more beats of music by slowing the turning and rising action, e.g., "SSSSS". We could also speed it up and dance it "SQQ". Depending on the rising action, used by the man, the lady's left foot could brush toward the right. This action would happen between the second and third steps. The man's feet should not brush. This action would cause a "popping up" on step two or a "dropping" on step three.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot with a heel lead and start rising. [Step 2.] Step forward and side right continuing to rise, allowing, if tempo permits, the left foot to brush to the right while turning right face from 1/8 to 1/4. [Step 3.] Leading the lady to turn to SCP step forward and side left to end, depending on the amount of turn, in SCP LOD or SCP DLW.

LADY Start in closed position facing DRC. [Step 1.] Step back right, toe to heel and start body rise. [Step 2 .] Step back and side left gradually rising to toe and allowing, if tempo permits, the right foot to brush to the left while turning right face from 1/8 to 1/4. At end of step start turning head slowly to right. [Step 3.] Completing opening of head step side and forward right to SCP LOD or SCP DLW, depending on the amount of turn.

GENERAL NOTES

The timing SSS (1 1/2 measure) can also be used to dance this figure.

In Round Dancing, the Hover Telemark, by default, turns to the right and ends in SCP. In ballroom it is frequently used as a left turn to change the direction of progression. The Hover Telemark can also QS - Fig 33 - 79 S#7 2003 Hover Telemark (continued) International Quickstep end in CP with the man ready to step outside the lady. In this case the last step for the lady is side and back with no head turn.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position moving diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Using CBM, forward right, heel leading, starting to turn right. Taking weight, rise to the toe. [Step 2.] While continuing the turning action started on step one, start the left foot forward. The turning action will cause the foot to end side. Take weight on the toe with sway to the right. [Step 3.] Swiveling to face reverse line of dance, close the right foot to the left, on the toe. The sway is still to the right. As you take weight with the leg collecting under the body, lower to the heel and allow the sway to dissolve. [Step 4.] Turn strongly right face, opening the door for the lady to go through your position. Step back left toeing in to pivot 1/2 turn right face to line of dance. Do not step back on the left and then turn, but turn on the right then step back left with a toe, heel, toe action. Maintain the feet in CBMP. It might appear that the left foot ends forward of the right because of the turn before the step.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position backing diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Using CBM, back left, toe heel, starting to turn right. Use only body rise at the end of the step. [Step 2.] Continuing the turn started on step one, start the right foot back but end with it pointing to line of dance as a side and forward step. Take weight on the toe with sway to he left. [Step 3.] The body will complete the turn to line of dance as the left foot closes to the right, on the toe. Sway is still to the left. As you take full weight and the right leg collects under the body, allow the sway to dissolve and the foot to lower to the heel. [Step 4.] Forward right through the place being vacated by the man. This is an aggressive heel lead turning to the right in a pivoting action keeping the feet in CBMP. The footwork will be heel, toe, heel.

GENERAL NOTES

As with all turns, the actual turning is between the beats. In the chart, we show the turn completed at the end of the beat, but more accurately the turn happens between the steps. The body flight is on a single line that moves diagonal to line of dance and the wall until the pivot. In such figures the leg swing is forward (or backward) but the foot arrives side. The lady's second step is an inside-of-turn action where there is initially more foot turn than body turn. A common method of expressing this action is "body turns less".

GENERAL NOTES

Remember to use the standard inside and outside turn actions. Step six could be modified to become the first step of the next figure. If rise and CBM were used, on step six, it would be the first step of a reverse figure, as an example. Often, in standard choreography, only the first three steps of this figure are used.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Commencing a left turn step back on the right foot, toe heel rising slightly with (NFR). [Step 2.] Close the left foot to the right, heel turn on the right turning left face 3/8. Transfer weight to the left foot heel to toe still rising. [Step 3.] Continue turning the body slightly left, step diagonally forward on the right toe completing the rise in SCP. Lower into the heel with light pressure.

GENERAL NOTES

The man rises at the end of step one and maintains the rise on step two for the rotary action, left face. Step three is to the side and slightly forward with the toe pointing DLW for the man and LOD for the lady. The lady should keep her head closed throughout her heel turn. She should not turn it to the right until she feels the man start to take the third step in SCP. This will allow them to maintain a good SCP. It also will allow the man to decide where the figure should end. A major mistake made by the lady is to open her head on the heel turn and then walk straight forward. Not only has she taken the direction away from the man, she has taken herself out of dance position. You may overturn this figure to nearly DLC, depending upon what is to follow. Do not emphasize the sway.

For both man and lady step 3 the actual footwork will be Toe, Ball, then lower to heel with light pressure

Your toe will be pointing diagonal line of dance and center of the hall. [Step 3.] Maintaining the left sway close the left foot to the right. There will be no foot swivel, only body turn. Continue to rise. [Step 4.] Maintaining the left sway, step side and forward right, on the toe, slightly between man's feet and lower to the heel, allowing the sway to dissolve. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, forward left, heel to toe, beginning to rise. [Step 6.] Turning left face start the right leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side on toe. Continue to rise. [Step 7.] Swivel left face on the right foot and close the left to it on the toe. Continue to rise. [Step 8.] Side and back right on toe with a right shoulder leading. Taking weight, lower to the heel. [Step 9.] Back left, toe to heel, to end in banjo diagonal reverse line of dance and center of hall.

GENERAL NOTES

*If danced from CP DLW with man's L and lady's R foot free, then the number of measures, timing and initial step would be as follows: 4 measures - SS QQS SQQ SS MAN: Fwd L (no turn), -, ... continue as described. LADY: Bk R (no turn), -, ... continue as described.

The figure consists of the first four steps of "Quarter Turns" (a quarter turn to the right) followed by a "Progressive Chassé" and completed by a slow step to banjo.

Care should be taken not to turn too much when dancing the chassés, keeping the body practically square to the wall the whole time. Also note the gradual rise on the chassés.

GENERAL NOTES

Note that the lady rises earlier than the man.

On step 1 the man has the choice of turning either on the heel of the right foot (TH) or on the ball of the right foot with the foot kept flat (THT). In either case the turn of step 2 is completed on the toes of both feet with the weight taken finally on step 3 to the right foot (TH).

The figure is normally followed with the man stepping back, lady forward to BJO.

In round dancing the Reverse Corté has become rare, the Hover Corté being a more popular substitute.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot with a heel lead toward DLC starting a left face turn using CBM. Rise at the end of the step. [Step 2.] Step back and to the side, toward DLC, on the right toe. The right shoulder is leading starting to blend to Fallaway Position. [Step 3.] Step back on the left toe, in Semi-Closed, toward DLC turning body strongly left face starting to lower. [Step 4.] Step back on the right toe toward COH with the toe turned in, pivoting left face into Closed Position DLW, lower at end of step. Keep the left foot extended forward during the pivot.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot with a toe to heel action using CBM and rising at the end of the step with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Step back and side on the left toe with left shoulder lead starting to blend to Semi-Closed Position. [Step 3.] Take a small step back toward DLC on the right toe in Fallaway Position, strongly pivoting left face to end facing toward COH, starting to lower. [Step 4.] Continuing to turn left face (body turns less), slip the left foot forward toward DRC on the left toe to CP, lower at end of step. Keep the right foot extended back throughout the step.

GENERAL NOTES

The ladies normal head changes are from the left to the right between steps 1 and 2, still right thru the start of step 3, then to the left as the pivot is started (late on step 3).

To achieve the full degree of turn necessary for both the man and lady they need to remain “up” on steps 3 and 4 until the turn is nearly completed, lowering through step 4 and down at the end of step 4.

The timing “QQQQ” is sometimes used for this figure.

The toe will point with more turn than the body will make. [Step 3] With no swivel of the right foot turn right face with right sway and close the left foot to the right, on the toe. Taking weight, dissolve the sway and lower to the heel for the next step. [Step 4] With strong CBM start a right face pivot by stepping forward right, heel leading. Keep the left foot behind, in CBMP with no weight. [Step 5] Using CBM to continue the right face turn, back left, toe heel. Start pulling the right foot towards the left as the man starts rising to lead a heel turn. [Step 6] Continue turning to the right with right sway on your left foot as the right closes to it. When completing the turn and the heels are together, change weight to the left foot and continue to rise. [Step 7] Continue the right turn and sway and step forward left, on the toe, with a left shoulder leading. Taking weight on the left toe, lower to the heel and dissolve the sway to begin the next step. [Step 8] Using CBM, forward right, heel toe in CBMP and Banjo outside partner. Taking weight, start to rise. [Step 9] Continuing the right face turn, sway to the right and start the left leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side, on the toe. [Step 10] Continue the left sway and right turn to a right shoulder lead and step back right, on the toe. Taking weight, lower to the heel and dissolve the sway to begin the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES

Although this is a book figure, it is made up of parts of, or other complete figures. Steps one, two and three are the first three of a Natural Turn. Four and five are similar to the first two steps of a Spin Turn. Five is modified to cause the lady to do a heel turn instead of a spinning action. Eight, nine and ten are a Running Finish. Putting them all together makes for a good sequence for a Quickstep routine. Once the turning action to the right has begun it must continue to the completion of the figure.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Turning the body right face step back to LOD and pivot 3/8 RF on the toe of the left foot keeping the right leg forward in CBMP. [Step 2.] With a heel lead step forward on the right foot between the lady’s feet toward LOD, heel to toe, as transfer weight to toe pivot 3/8 RF. [Step 3.] With a left side lead step forward on the left toe toward LOD continuing to turn body to right to end backing toward DLC. [Step 4.] Quickly place the right toe behind the left foot to open a path for the lady to run around the man. [Step 5 & 6.] No actual step here but an unwind action on both feet using the heel of the left foot and the toe of right foot. At the end of step 6 the weight should be fully transferred to the right foot and a rise to the toe should start. [Step 7.] Complete the RF turn high on the R toe in Closed Position and step back on the left foot towards DRC, toe to heel.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Turning the body right face step forward on the right foot between the man’s feet towards LOD, heel to toe, and spin 3/8 RF. [Step 2.] Step back towards LOD on the toe of the left foot turning 3/8 RF. [Step 3.] Close the right foot with slight heel turn and rise to right ball of foot. [Step 4.] Starting to circle around man step forward on the ball of the left foot. [Step 5.] Continue around man stepping forward on the ball of the right foot. [Step 6.] Continue around man on the ball of the left foot turning to Closed Position as rise to toe. [Step 7.] Brush the right foot to the left in a hover action and step forward right on toe between the man’s feet. Lower to heel.

GENERAL NOTES

The Twist turn should be swift with legs almost straight and no sitting action. It can end in Semi-Closed Position in which case the man will turn the lady to Semi-Closed between steps 6 and 7. Note that the first three steps are on the line of progression.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed dance position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Using strong CBM, back left with a right face pivoting action. The right foot remains in a forward position in CBMP. [Step 2.] Still down from the 1/2 pivot, forward right, heel leading, rising to the toe and spinning to the right. [Step 3.] Continuing the right face spin, side and slightly back, a small step, left. This is a "collecting" step on the toe, then lowering to the heel for the next step.

QS - Fig 9 - 23 Spin Turn (continued) International Quickstep

LADY Start in closed dance position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Using strong CBM, forward right with a right face pivoting action. The left foot remains back in CBMP. [Step 2.] Still down from the 1/2 pivot, back left, on the toe with a soft knee. Rising with the man, spin to the right. Allow the right foot to brush toward the left foot. [Step 3.] Continuing the right faced spin, side and slightly forward, a small step, right. This is a "collecting" step on the toe then lowering to the heel for the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

The spin turn is structurally an interrupted pivot so we must use some basic rules for pivoting action. Although the first step is back for the man, there is a strong body rotation (CBM) right face before taking the step. The left foot might start moving slightly forward and allow the turning action to cause it to finish moving back. This turning action clears a path for the lady's forward step. The turn, though described as so many eighths of a revolution per step, is continuous with the greatest amount completed in the first beat. We spread the remainder across the final two beats. The rise in the figure is unusual in that the man and lady rise late and at slightly different times. She rises later than normal by taking step 2 on a very soft knee and awaits the man's rise. He rises later (at the end of count two) because his initial forward step on a pivot is a heel lead. You must take care not to "pop up" but to make the rise gradual through the remaining time. A result of the delayed rise is that the lady's free right foot is able to move toward her supporting foot - a brushing action. The rise with absence of sway causes this brush. The man should be careful to "post" the lady (dance to keep the lady vertical over her supporting left foot) by rising upward to her. Eagerness to take the third step is usually a common problem that pulls the lady off the "post" position. You must dance the third step on the toe and be quite short, lowering at the end of the third count but only as the weight comes over the foot.

GENERAL NOTES

Timing . The timing described is the same as the most common timing used in the Foxtrot. Other possible timings better suited to fast tempo Quicksteps might be SQQ& SQQ or even SSS& QQS.

Ending position . Semi-Closed is the most common ending position, however ending in Banjo is also possible, the lady stepping side and back on step 7 and both slightly increasing the amount of turn.

[Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward right, heel to toe, starting to rise at the end of the step. [Step 2.] Continuing the right turn as step side on the left toe and continue to rise. The leg will start forward and the turn will cause the foot to end side. [Step 3.] Still turning to the right, close the right foot to the left, on the toe. [Step 4.] Still turning right, step side and back on the toe of the right foot. The direction of movement should now be diagonal line of dance and the wall.

GENERAL NOTES

Figure starts in Closed Position and ends in Closed Position. A sway to the right with man’s head to right (lady’s to the left) is commonly used.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in semi-closed position DLW. [Step 1] Starting to turn to the right, forward right, heel to toe with soft right knee. At end of step 1 rise quickly and strongly on R toe to create a light spring action onto the next step. [Step 2] Continuing to turn land side L towards wall, toe to heel with left sway. Immediately lower relaxing left knee. Head stays left. [Step 3] Continuing to lower and increasing the sway touch right toe to floor, with no weight, well behind L, head still to left.

LADY Start in semi-closed position DLW. [Step 1.] Turning slightly to the right, forward left, heel to toe with soft L knee. At the end of Step 1 rise quickly and strongly on L toe to create a light spring action onto the next step. [Step 2.] Land side R towards wall, toe to heel, QS – Fig 24 - 61 S#5 2001 Tipsy Point (continued) International Quickstep with R sway. Immediately lower relaxing right knee. Head stays right. [Step 3] Continuing to lower and increasing the sway touch left toe to floor, with no weight, well behind R, head still to right.

GENERAL NOTES

An illusion of "semi-closed position throughout" is created by the of the head throughout. On the second step however the man and lady's shoulders are practically parallel. Exit from this figure generally requires straightening the knees and dissolving the sway at EO3 for a back lock figure towards DLC. The amount of the turn may vary.

The figure can also be executed starting from BJO DLW, in which case the lady's first step is bk L and her third step is crossing left in front of right with toe only touching the floor. She may turn her head to the right or leave it to the left.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position backing DLC. [Step 1.] Turning slightly to the right for a right shoulder lead, back right, toe. Start to rise. [Step 2.] Maintaining the right shoulder lead lock the left foot in front of the right. Continuing to rise. [Step 3.] Still with a right shoulder lead, back right, on the toe then lowering to the heel. [Step 4.] Back left, in banjo and CBMP. Banjo requires a slight body turn to the right. Begin to rise. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left turn, back right. Use the toe to continue the rise. [Step 6.] Continuing the left turn, side and forward left with left shoulder leading. Take weight on the toe lowering to the heel. The next step will be in Banjo outside partner.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position moving DLC. [Step 1.] Turning slightly to the right to a left shoulder lead, forward left, on the toe and begin to rise. [Step 2.] Maintaining the feel of a left shoulder lead, lock the right foot behind the left, on the toe. Continue to rise. [Step 3.] Still with a left shoulder lead, forward left, on the toe, lowering to the heel. [Step 4.] Forward right, heel toe, outside partner in banjo. Banjo requires a slight body turn to the right. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left turn, step forward on the left toe. Begin to rise. [Step 6.] Continuing the left face turn, step side and back on the right foot with right shoulder leading. Take weight toe heel. The next step will be in Banjo.

QS - Fig 8 - 20 S#6 2002 V - 6 (following a Spin Turn) (continued) International Quickstep

GENERAL NOTES

For the man, all backward steps are backing DLC except step six. Step six establishes a new direction of travel toward DLW. The lady is moving in the same direction only forward on the first five steps and backward on step six. This change of direction creates a "V" pattern on the floor, hence the figure name. You may enter the V - 6 from other figures, e.g., an under turned natural turn. In such cases the figure must end with a right shoulder leading for the man (left shoulder leading for the lady) to start the back lock.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed dance position facing and moving line of dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM, forward left, heel to toe. Use enough rise to cause the lady to close her feet on the next step. [Step 2.] Turning to the left start the right leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side, on the toe. Taking full weight, lower to the heel as the left leg collects under the body. The foot should turn more than the body so that it almost ends in a back step. [Step 3.] Turning slightly to the right, back left in banjo and CBMP. [Step 4.] Continue turning to the right on the left foot as you pull the right past it, on the heel and end with a small side step. [Step 5.] Compressing slightly, forward left.

LADY Start in closed dance position backing line of dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM, back right, toe heel. [Step 2.] Pull the left foot to the right, turning left slightly then changing weight to the left. [Step 3.] With a slight turn to the right, forward right, outside partner in CBMP and banjo, heel lead. [Step 4.] Still turning to the right start the left leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side, toe heel. [Step 5.] Back right.

GENERAL NOTES

The man uses a strong body turn to the right on step three. The lady turns slightly more than he does on steps one and two to finish on his right side. On step three she keeps her left hip toward the man. On steps three, four and five she makes more turn than the man to return to closed dance position.
