[‘95] 9 8 7 PREFACE Sometime in the second half of 1944, as the war in Europe drew to a close, Jean-Paul Sartre noticed that in discussions about postwar France, the imminent return of French Jews deported by the Nazis was never men tioned. Some of the speakers, he guessed, were not pleased by the prospect; others, friends of the Jews, thought it best to he silent. (Neither they nor Sartre knew how many of the deported Jews would never return.) Thinking about these discussions, Sartre decided to write a critique of anti-Semitism. Both the occasion and the subject of the critique were French. -

My inquiry is twofold: First, drawing on the resources of Merleau-Ponty, I argue that the conceptual reworking of habit as bodily orientation helps us to identify the more subtle but fundamental workings of racism, to catch its insidious, gestural expressions, as well as its habitual modes of racialised perception. -

It was taught by John Dreher at Lawrence University. Professor Dreher introduced me to philosophy and has continued to be a model for me of what a philosophy teacher should be. He was funny, demanding and caring. It is because of him and that course that I have always thought of John Dewey as an important philosopher, and it was because of him that I wanted to be a philosophy professor. I have known Sandra Peterson and Doug Lewis for more than 20 years now, and they continue to be my teachers. It is because of them that I love the history of philosophy, and it is in comparison to them that I continue to see how much more I have to learn. Sandra opened my eyes to a different way of reading Plato, and her insights and scholarship have emboldened me to question the traditional ways philosophical texts have been read. The many hours Doug spent with me talking about this dissertation, and about his experience as a philosophy professor, and then this year with Yi talking about the history of logic, have been the highlight of my education (and that's saying something, because I've been in school for a long, long time). -

How Sartre, Philosopher, Misreads Sartre, Novelist: Nausea and the Adventures of the Narrative Self Ben Roth1 Besides, art is fun and for fun, it has innumerable intentions and charms. Literature interests us on different levels in different fashions. It is full of tricks and magic and deliberate mystification. Literature entertains, it does many things, and philosophy does one thing. Iris Murdoch (1997, p. 4) If there is something comforting—religious, if you want—about paranoia, there is still also anti-paranoia, where nothing is connected to anything, a condition not many of us can bear for long. Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow (p. 434) Both those who write in favor of and against the notion of the narrative self cite Sartre and his novel Nausea as exemplary opponents of it. Alasdair MacIntyre, a central proponent of the narrative self, writes: “Sartre makes Antoine Roquentin argue not just [...] that narrative is very different from life, but that to present human life in the form of a narrative is always to falsify it” (1984, p. 214). Galen Strawson, a critic of narrativity, writes that “Sartre sees the narrative, story-telling impulse as a defect, regrettable. [...] He thinks human Narrativity is essentially a matter of bad faith, of radical (and typically irremediable) inauthenticity” (2004, p. 435). I think that this type of interpretation of Nausea is blindered and bad and relies on an impoverished approach to reading fiction typical of philosophers: of taking one character at one moment as mouthpiece for both a novel as a whole and author behind it. Beginning as it does in description, the novel challenges these conceptual orders rather than taking one side or the other; it thus invites us to rethink the terrain of narrativity. -

By Cecilia Cissell Lucas Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Berkeley Professor Patricia Baquedano-López, Chair This interdisciplinary study examines the question of decolonizing the white colonizer in the United States. After establishing the U.S. as a nation-state built on and still manifesting a colonial tradition of white supremacy which necessitates multifaceted decolonization, the dissertation asks and addresses two questions: 1) what particular issues need to be taken into account when attempting to decolonize the white colonizer and 2) how might the white colonizer participate in decolonization processes? Many scholars in the fields this dissertation draws on -- Critical Race Theory, Critical Ethnic Studies, Coloniality and Decolonial Theory, Language Socialization, and Performance Studies -- have offered incisive analyses of colonial white supremacy, and assume a transformation of white subjectivities as part of the envisioned transformation of social, political and economic relationships. However, in regards to processes of decolonization, most of that work is focused on the decolonization of political and economic structures and on decolonizing the colonized. The questions pursued in this dissertation do not assume a simplistic colonizer/colonized binary but recognize the saliency of geo- and bio-political positionalities. -

From the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy Jean-Paul Sartre Christina Howells Biography Sartre was a philosopher of paradox: an existentialist who attempted a reconciliation with Marxism, a theorist of freedom who explored the notion of predestination. From the mid-1930s to the late-1940s, Sartre was in his ‘classical’ period. He explored the history of theories of imagination leading up to that of Husserl, and developed his own phenomenological account of imagination as the key to the freedom of consciousness. He analysed human emotions, arguing that emotion is a freely chosen mode of relationship to the outside world. In his major philosophical work, L’Être et le Néant (Being and Nothingness)(1943a), Sartre distinguished between consciousness and all other beings: consciousness is always at least tacitly conscious of itself, hence it is essentially ‘for itself’ (pour-soi) – free, mobile and spontaneous. Everything else, lacking this self-consciousness, is just what it is ‘in-itself’ (en-soi); it is ‘solid’ and lacks freedom. Consciousness is always engaged in the world of which it is conscious, and in relationships with other consciousnesses. These relationships are conflictual: they involve a battle to maintain the position of subject and to make the other into an object. This battle is inescapable. Although Sartre was indeed a philosopher of freedom, his conception of freedom is often misunderstood. Already in Being and Nothingness human freedom operates against a background of facticity and situation. My facticity is all the facts about myself which cannot be changed – my age, sex, class of origin, race and so on; my situation may be modified, but it still constitutes the starting point for change and roots consciousness firmly in the world. -

Alaina Long “The Oppositional Gaze” by bell hooks I. Article Summary Purpose of Research What investment does the author have in this issue? What is the goal of the article? How do you know? Hooks is a black feminist writer and theorist who focuses on race, class, gender and sexual oppression in all facets of society, in addition to media outlets and representations of black women. Hooks addresses how this affects black women’s lived experiences and in this article, their spectatorship of media portrayals of them. The goal of the article is to address the necessity of black female spectatorship to represent our lived experiences through our gaze and allow us agency over our representations in the media and how society views us as a whole. Part 1 gazing outward The Spectrum of Feminist Reception history In many ways, one might say that feminist film history begins in 1975 with Laura Mulvey’s essay “visual Pleasure and narrative Cinema.” Certainly, it could be argued the essay generated cinema/feminist studies’ historical turn in response to Mulvey’s focus on the “male gaze” and her declaration of visual pleasure as essentially masculine, thereby seemingly eliding or erasing women’s actual experience in the movie theater. But I would argue Mulvey’s essay was in itself the moment of a “turn” to history, at least within feminist film studies. While there had been other noteworthy examinations of the representation of women in film, especially Mollyh askell’s From Reverence to Rape and Marjorie Rosen’s Popcorn Venus (both published in 1974), the need for a historical approach, that is, an effort to explain as well as describe events1 in cinema’s development from a feminist critical perspective now became crystallized around Mulvey’s essay. “visual Pleasure and narrative Cinema” adds gender to the idealized spectator of 1970s film theory, there- by immediately inserting the concept in a social/cultural context. hence, I would argue that Mulvey’s essay functions as a metahistory, but a history nonetheless, since it outlines a larger social/cultural category as the driving internal mechanism of cinema. Whether or not we label this as history, Mulvey’s close textual analysis of the politics of looking, which made women solely objects and never subjects of the gaze, generated a search for women’s agency elsewhere than on the screen itself.
