Mormon Literature: Progress and Prospects By Eugene England This essay is the culmination of several attempts England made throughout his life to assess the state of Mormon literature and letters. The version below, a slightly revised and updated version of the one that appeared in David J. Whittaker, ed., Mormon Americana: A Guide to Sources and Collections in the United States (Provo, Utah: BYU Studies, 1995), 455–505, is the one that appeared in the tribute issue Irreantum published following England’s death. Originally published in: Irreantum 3, no. 3 (Autumn 2001): 67–93. This, the single most comprehensive essay on the history and theory of Mormon literature, first appeared in 1982 and has been republished and expanded several times in keeping up with developments in Mormon letters and Eugene England’s own thinking. Anyone seriously interested in LDS literature could not do better than to use this visionary and bibliographic essay as their curriculum. 1 ExpEctations MorMonisM hAs bEEn called a “new religious tradition,” in some respects as different from traditional Christianity as the religion of Jesus was from traditional Judaism. 2 its beginnings in appearances by God, Jesus Christ, and ancient prophets to Joseph smith and in the recovery of lost scriptures and the revelation of new ones; its dramatic history of persecution, a literal exodus to a promised land, and the build - ing of an impressive “empire” in the Great basin desert—all this has combined to make Mormons in some ways an ethnic people as well as a religious community. Mormon faith is grounded in literal theophanies, concrete historical experience, and tangible artifacts (including the book of Mormon, the irrigated fields of the Wasatch Front, and the great stone pioneer temples of Utah) in certain ways that make Mormons more like ancient Jews and early Christians and Muslims than, say, baptists or Lutherans. -

The tannaite and amoraic interpretations of Gen. 1,26 do not differ from other rabbinical expositions of Scriptural passages in that they show us a body of scholars agreeing with each other in all fundamental respects, but-mainly through the works of J. NEUSNER and his students-it has become clear that we cannot trust this picture. In order to recover the original form of the haggadah, we should com- pare the rabbinical evidence with Philonic and Gnostic texts, where the passage plays a very important role. Furthermore, the Samaritan literature must not be left out. CHAPTER FIVE The Name of God The Golem Legend and the Demiurgic Role of the Alphabet Since Samaritanism must be viewed within the wider phenomenon of the Jewish religion, it will be pertinent to present material from Judaism proper which is corroborative to the thesis of the present work. In this Chapter, the idea about the agency of the Name of God in the creation process will be expounded; then, in the next Chapter, the various traditions about the Angel of the Lord which are relevant to this topic will be set forth. An apt introduction to the Jewish teaching about the Divine Name as the instrument of the creation is the so-called golem legend. It is not too well known that the greatest feat to which the Jewish magician aspired actually was that of duplicating God's making of man, the crown of the creation. In the Middle Ages, Jewish esotericism developed a great cycle of golem legends, according to which the able magician was believed to be successful in creating a o ?� (o?u)1. But the word as well as the concept is far older. Rabbinic sources call Adam agolem before he is given the soul: In the first hour [of the sixth day], his dust was gathered; in the second, it was kneaded into a golem; in the third, his limbs were shaped; in the fourth, a soul was irifused into him; in the fifth, he arose and stood on his feet[ ...]. (Sanh. 38b) In 1615, Zalman �evi of Aufenhausen published his reply (Jii.discher Theriak) to the animadversions of the apostate Samuel Friedrich Brenz (in his book Schlangenbalg) against the Jews. -

The Samaritans (al-S miriyy n) and Some Theological Issues Between Samaritanism and Islam Fehrullah Terkan "A Samaritan is like a full Jew." N. Schur I. INTRODUCTION After a period of classical western perspective of Islam and its holy book, the recently redirected interest of western scholarship in Islam appears under a few categories in terms of variety of approaches to it. Some approaches concern themselves with only theological aspects of Islam; some argue against the authenticity of the Qur‟ānic creed while seemingly accepting the historicity of it. Some others approached this “newfangled” faith by questioning its historicity. This last one is basically a historical standpoint that investigates Islamic origins either through the Islamic sources with „fair‟ criticism, or -harboring significant doubts about them- through non-Islamic sources contemporary to the rise of Islam. Such works try to underline the Jewish and Christian factors in the development of Islam, while others prefer to see it as a heresy of the former. Few scholars attempt to better understand the nature of this new religion by studying its historical and cultural background as well as the internal dynamics. Some scholars utter the fact that the volume of the extra-Islamic sources at the time of Islamic emergence is not that sufficient to reconstruct the Islamic history.1 1 For example, F. Harrell: Toward a Mormon Literary Theory Toward a Mormon Literary Theory Jack Harrell ast year I walked into a literary theory course on the campus of L Brigham Young University–Idaho. The teacher was a colleague of mine, Jeff Slagle, a gifted young professor well-versed in criticism and theory. I was auditing the course that semester, revisiting theories and approaches I’d first encountered years before as a BYU undergraduate. The main text for the course was The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, and the names on the reading list were familiar—Cleanth Brooks, Louis Althusser, Wolfgang Iser, Jacques Derrida, Annette Kolodny, Henry Louis Gates Jr. But this was dense material—complex writing, challenging ideas, texts that can forever change the way a person thinks and reads. Just as I had experienced at BYU, taking similar courses from Bruce Young and Cecilia Konchar Farr, I found value in each of the texts Jeff assigned—feminists extolling the roles of women, cultural critics challenging modern material- ism, language theorists writing of the presence or absence of extralinguistic reality. -

JSJ 37,2_334_241-259 3/22/06 6:19 PM Page 241 EARLY CHRISTIAN AUTHORS ON SAMARITANS AND SAMARITANISM: A REVIEW ARTICLE1 LEAH DI SEGNI The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Samaritan studies have known a very great increase in the last twenty- five years, both in the quantity and in the scope of published research. The boost that began in the Sixties and Seventies of the last century, with the publication of a number of basic works dealing with Samaritan history, philology and theology, and with the first timid appearance of archaeological evidence of the Samaritan ethnos, broke out into a ver- itable flood of scholarly works in the Eighties and Nineties and in the first years of the Twenty-First century. Partly this is due to a natural process of fructification: scholars who made their first steps in the field in the third quarter of the last century now yield the mature fruit of their work; but it is also apparent that not a few students and scholars have become interested in the various aspects of Samaritan studies, if only because the newly published researches have suddenly brought the Samaritan phenomenon into their consciousness. Students of late antiquity, who until recently viewed the history or the theological strife of the period as a confrontation of pagans, Jews and Christians (or at most of pagans, Jews, Christians and “heretics”), now identify another contestant in the arena, one whose character, social status, motivations, and general Weltanschauung, are far from well known. Therefore, there was a keenly felt need for a collection of texts that would put at the disposal of the public, in accessible form, as many relevant sources as possible, and the present book worthily fulfils that desideratum. -

Of Many Hearts and Many Minds: The Mormon Novel and the Post-Utopian Challenge of Assimilation by Scott Hales A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English & Comparative Literature APPROVED: Jay Twomey, Chair Jennifer Glaser Leland S. Person March 26, 2014 Cincinnati, OH For much of their nineteenth-century history, Mormons rejected the novel as worldly entertainment that corrupted the young and propagated offensive Mormon stereotypes. This changed, however, when Mormons began to recognize the form’s potential for promoting social betterment, teaching wholesome moral values, and using its popular appeal to draw people to the Mormon fold. Interestingly, this shift in attitude toward the novel came at a time when the Mormons, once a militantly separatist people, sought greater assimilation with the American mainstream by abandoning overt utopian practices, like polygamy and communal living, for practices that would no longer alienate them from the nation’s Protestant majority. In my dissertation, I explore the relationship between this transitional period and the development of the Mormon novel, arguing that Mormons embraced the novel as a cultural site for mediating their paradoxical desire to separate from and participate in the American mainstream. Indeed, I show how the novel allowed Mormons to express their utopian principles—if not their utopian practices—as mainstream America compelled them to take what I call a “post-utopian” stance toward society. Moreover, I show how adopting the novel form also enabled Mormons to contribute to and engage American literary culture, construct Mormon identities, and explore their ambivalent encounters with others from inside and outside their ranks. -

Parker Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2011 Abstract Since Mark Leone’s landmark 1979 study Roots of Modern Mormonism , a scholarly consensus has emerged that a key element of Mormon distinctiveness stems from one’s subscription to an alternate narrative or experience of history. In the past generation, scholarship on Mormon historical thought has addressed important issues arising from these insights from anthropological and sociological perspectives. These perspectives have joined a rich and venerable controversial literature seeking to “debunk” Mormon narratives, apologetic scholarship asserting their epistemic harmony or superiority, as well as fault-finding scholarship that constructs differences in Mormon historical thinking as a problem that must be solved. The lacuna that this project begins to fill is the lack of scholarship specifically in the field of intellectual history describing the various alternate narratives of the past that have been and are being developed by Mormons, their contents, the methodologies by which they are produced and the theories of historical causation that they entail.
