  • John Prine by Dave Hoekstra July 20, 1986
John Prine By Dave Hoekstra July 20, 1986--- NASHVILLE Blue has turned to gold in the rearview mirror of John Prine's new Corvette. "Maybe because it's been 15 years now, but the questions I got asked all the time about how me and Steve Goodman got started - it seems in the last couple of years they've become a bit more special than they seemed to be," Prine says after a thoughtful pause toward the end of an interview under the poolside veranda of the Sheraton Music City Hotel. "Now it seems like another time - back a ways - and real special. It's funny. You work real hard and then getting out (of Chicago) wasn't like getting out of a little town, it was just calling for a different music scene. "All the things that went down the first four or five years seem real special to me now," Prine says. "It's almost like they're painted a special color when I think back at them. It's more than a pleasant memory - it's just real nice. Sometimes things have to change and move along before you can put them in some kind of proper perspective. Once something is done, you can't change it, so I'm glad it's a real pleasant memory rather than not." The 38-year-old Prine is reminiscing while sharing a dozen chicken wings with me and Angie Varias, his drummer for the "Pink Cadillac" and "Storm Windows" albums. Kicking back in blue jeans, a black untucked T-shirt and bare feet, John Prine is content.

  • Grammy Winner John Prine Brings Singer-Songwriter Act to Cal Poly
California Polytechnic State University Sept. 2, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 Grammy Winner John Prine Brings Singer- Songwriter Act to Cal Poly Sept. 25 SAN LUIS OBISPO, -- Considered “a songwriter’s songwriter” throughout the music industry, Grammy-winner John Prine brings his craggy voice, biting guitar and deadpan humor to the Christopher Cohan Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2004. Opening for John Prine is popular alt country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier. Cal Poly Arts presents Prine -- whose genius lies in his lyrics and the stories he tells -- as part of the new 2004/2005 season. “My brother Dave taught me a chord...and from there, it was me sitting there alone in a room singing to a wall,” Prine remembers. He then adds with his characteristic style of understatement, “The wall seemed to like it.” Loyal audiences and music critics around the country have been “liking” his style for decades. With the encouragement of fellow musician Kris Kristofferson, Prine penned his 1971 self-titled debut album for a national label. The release was praised by critics around the country. Throughout eight albums and two record companies, Prine continued refining his voice and attracting fans who closely identified with his emotional sharp shooting. Says Prine: “It’s a great feeling when you put something in a song and other people say that’s exactly how they feel. That’s the most gratifying thing about songwriting for me.” Among the songs that Prine wrote are such classics as “Please Don’t Bury Me,”
