These three fall in love with each other — completely, deeply, and intensely — and begin a shared life together as a threesome. In GHOSTS, three young Europeans from completely different worlds collide: PAUL, the musician from London; BELLA, the beautiful French woman who hasn't yet found her place A bittersweet love, the triangular relationship is in constant danger of falling apart: PAUL, in life; and KÄTHE, the native Berliner, the anchoring nucleus and point of reference for the a man as gifted as he is erratic, can be extremely destructive at times. Aside from music, other two — and as a result, she faces the danger of being crushed... he has one other obsession: he climbs and crosses the roofs high above the city. She wants to save them, their love, and the three-way relationship — but is she able to? When PAUL develops an emotional crisis that threatens to tear the three apart and destroy the relationship, all three decide to undertake a joint journey to much higher rooftops: to the "roof of the world", deep into the mountain landscape of the Himalayas. PAUL has gone there often — whenever he's found himself in the need of regaining his footing. This is the first time, however, that he allows KÄTHE and BELLA to accompany him. There on the roof of the world, in total isolation, without the grounding stability of the familiar, their love is put to the ultimate test. 6 — GERMAN PROJECTS GERMAN PROJECTS — 7 AUGENSCHEIN English title: . .. BAMcinématek presents Indie 80s, a comprehensive, 60+ film series highlighting the decade between 70s New Hollywood and the 90s indie boom, Jul 17—Aug 27 Co-presented by Cinema Conservancy The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/June 11, 2015—From Friday, July 17 through Thursday, August 27, BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present Indie 80s, a sweeping survey of nearly 70 films from the rough-and-tumble early days of modern American independent cinema. An aesthetic and political rebuke to the greed-is-good culture of bloated blockbusters and the trumped-up monoculture of Reagan-era America, Indie 80s showcases acclaimed works like Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984—Jul 18), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986—Aug 8), and Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape (1989—Aug 14) alongside many lesser- known but equally accomplished works that struggled to find proper distribution in the era before studio classics divisions. Filmmakers including Ross McElwee, William Lustig, Rob Nilsson, and more will appear in person to discuss their work. Like the returning expatriate’s odyssey in Robert Kramer’s four-hour road movie Route One/USA (1989—Aug 16), a sampling of 80s indie cinema comprises an expansive journey through the less-traveled byways of America. From the wintry Twin Cities of the improvised, hilariously profane road trip Patti Rocks (1988—Aug 25) to the psychopath’s stark Chicago hunting grounds in John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986—Jul 29) to the muggy Keys of Florida in filmmaker Victor Nuñez’s eco-thriller A Flash of Green (1984—Aug 12), regional filmmakers’ cameras canvassed an America largely invisible to Hollywood.

  • Towards a History of the Serial Killer in German Film History
FOCUS ON GERMAN STUDIES 14 51 “Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen...” – Towards a History of the Serial Killer in German Film History JÜRGEN SCHACHERL Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen, dann kommt Haarmann auch zu dir, mit dem Hackehackebeilchen macht er Leberwurst aus dir. - German nursery rhyme t is not an unknown tendency for dark events to be contained and to find expression in nursery rhymes and children’s verses, such as I the well-known German children’s rhyme above. At first instance seemingly no more than a mean, whiny playground chant, it in fact alludes to a notorious serial killer who preyed on young male prostitutes and homeless boys. Placed in this context, the possible vulgar connotations arising from Leberwurst become all the more difficult to avoid recognizing. The gravity of these events often becomes drowned out by the sing-song iambics of these verses; their teasing melodic catchiness facilitates the overlooking of their lyrical textual content, effectively down-playing the severity of the actual events. Moreover, the containment in common fairy tale-like verses serves to mythologize the subject matter, rendering it gradually more fictitious until it becomes an ahistorical prototype upon a pedestal. Serial killer and horror films have to an arguably large extent undergone this fate – all too often simply compartmentalized in the gnarly pedestal category of “gore and guts” – in the course of the respective genres’ development and propagation, particularly in the American popular film industry: Hollywood. The gravity and severity of the serial murder phenomenon become drowned in an indifferent bloody splattering of gory effects.

A Renewed Perspective on the History of Chinese Islamic Studies in Japan and Relevant Research Characteristics Tuoheti Alimu, Tohoku University, Japan The European Conference on the Social Sciences 2019 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract In Worldwide Chinese Islamic studies are consisted of two schools, “Western” and “Japanese.” I will focus my research “On Western Study on Chinese Islam” and “Chinese Islam in Japanese Study”. This will be a groundbreaking piece of work in Worldwide academia. Western study on Chinese Islam began in the latter half of the 19th century. With the opening of China, western missionaries, ambassadors and merchants entered into the inner China region and encountered Chinese Muslim society and culture. About the Japanese study on Chinese Islam, I have listed four stages of the development. There are representative figures, academic achievements, and different traits for each stage. My research will give detailed comments, so have a fuller understanding of the development of the studies of Islam and Muslims in China conducted by the Western scholars and by the Japanese scholars, including research orientation, foci, traits, and so on. A unique research project on how Chinese Islam was studied and understood in the West and the Japan since the first encounter between European Western and Japanese scholars and Chinese Muslim.
