Under assurance that Australia’s new National Baseball League would definitely commence at the end of 2010, this 2009/10 Claxton Shield was proclaimed to be the last of its kind. Similar to the previous competition, this program was designed to be as close as possible to what the National League might bring as a kind of “forerunner” to the new competition. As another progressive upgrade from the previous year, each of the five major state teams were scheduled to play two three-game weekend series against each other state on a “home & away” basis. The schedule comprised more games than the previous season with the abandonment of the “Showcase Round” from the 2008/09 competition. Standard programming was for a Friday night game plus a Saturday afternoon/night double- header, however, separate games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were scheduled for Perth as a variation to this. Rained-out and/or postponed games were re-scheduled to be added to weekend programs for the return series between the same teams. At the conclusion of the 24 preliminary games played by each team the top placed team on the table was automatically qualified to host the best-of-three Grand Final series.     MEMO TO: Members DATE: 6th AUGUST 2018 FROM: Baseball Victoria SUBJECT: Under 12 State Winter Championships, Monash University, STG Training Sessions with Miranda Frisken, Pat Cronin Foundation Dear Members, 2018 Under 12 State Winter Championships The Under 12 State Winter Championships finished up on Sunday 29th July in Mildura. Seven teams competed across two pools at the Old Aerodrome Ovals. Participating Winter Associations included Bendigo, Geelong, City West, Latrobe Valley, Dandenong, Sunraysia and a combined team made up of players from Ringwood and Diamond Valley (Ring DV). The competitors played hard and the ladder changed multiple times throughout the weekend. In the end Ring/DV came together as a squad and won pool A whilst City West took out the title in pool B. Congratulations to all involved and thank you for all the hard work of the volunteers who made the event possible. That concludes the State Winter Championships for 2018. Baseball Victoria looks forward to seeing everyone again next year. As a tribute to their home diamond and club house of the last 25+ years, Monash University BC are holding a ‘Farewell to the Monadome’ Day on Sunday August 12th.

The lockdown is currently set to expire at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, 17 February 2021 and Baseball Victoria will provide further details as they are made available. The restrictions now in effect across Victoria are: • Only four reasons to leave home (within 5km radius of home unless not available within): o shopping for necessary goods o caregiving/compassionate reasons o essential work o two hours of exercise • No public or private gatherings • No community sport “With the fast-moving COVID situation, it’s so important that our community stays safe. We have done this before and we can get through it again together as a community,” Baseball Victoria CEO Kristie Middleton said. “Please stay home and stay safe while we monitor updates from the Victorian Government.     Flintoff & Dunn’s AUSTRALIAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - 2015 AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE 2015 IN REVIEW! - By Peter Flintoff Section 1 PERTH HEAT JUGGERNAUT MAKES IT 4 FROM 5 ABL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2015! In 2014/15 we enjoyed the fifth season of the "second coming" of the Australian Baseball League. Once again six teams from major capital centres made up the competition, namely Adelaide Bite, Brisbane Bandits, Canberra Cavalry, Melbourne Aces, Perth Heat and Sydney Blue Sox. As usual these teams comprised many of the best local players with the addition of international imports from the USA, Japan, Taipei and Korea mainly. Having said that, some of our very best Australian professional talent either did not play or played only part of the season as a worrying trend. To continue their elected path, only the Melbourne Aces hosted Japanese professional imports for the 2015 season. The remainder of this paragraph is a repeat from last season, but my opinion has not changed and, moreover, it is stronger than ever. The Japanese players had only a modest impact before, as dictated, packing up to return home at Christmas time. 'Flintoff & Dunn' has probably said enough about the overall value of importing Japanese players into our ABL, especially given that they are unable to stay the course of the full season. Regardless of what philosophical advantage there may be for our league to have some Japanese "connection", there is sufficient evidence that the Japanese import players provide very little value to the club(s) that host them. It is more of a detraction and a distraction to replace these players mid-season.

    Flintoff & Dunn’s AUSTRALIAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - 2009 CLAXTON 2009 IN REVIEW! - By Peter Flintoff Section 2 WEST AUSTRALIA WINS BACK-TO-BACK FOR DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY SHIELD With our long-awaited new National League cast aside for at least another summer, the 2008/09 season saw a slightly revamped and upgraded Claxton Shield competition, much along the same lines as the quite successful 2007/08 version. The 2008/09 Claxton Shield would be conducted under the banner of the 75th DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY of the competition. To celebrate this, teams agreed to wear “modified retro uniforms” from their traditional baseball past. The most significant change was the abandonment of the Australian Provincial team that had enjoyed Claxton Shield status since the 2002 competition. Even though ‘Flintoff & Dunn’ have been staunch supporters of the Provincial concept and its place in a balanced six-team competition, we had to accept the reality of the direction chosen by Baseball Australia. In a nutshell, they were doing their best to prepare for the new National League with a similar “Home and Away” style schedule, involving series of games in each state. In order to provide some extra opportunity for “provincial players” to compete in the 2008/09 Claxton Shield, a pre-competition draft was organised whereby each of the State teams could select one “import” player. History would show that Western Australia scooped the pool when they selected ACT slugger Nick Kimpton with the last pick. He went on to win the prestigious Helms Award, while helping WA to secure back-to-back national championships.

The health, wellbeing and safety of all involved in our sport is paramount, as such Baseball Victoria will continue to work closely with the relevant health authorities, both at a national and state level, to ensure we successfully navigate our way to safely resuming activity and play for baseball in Victoria. “Victoria has once again come together to navigate challenging COVID circumstances and keep each other safe. We are pleased to see the easing of restrictions and get back to our beloved baseball, and we look forward to a safe and successful return to activity and play. We understand how disappointing it can be to have our routine and favourite sporting activities interrupted, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we keep our community safe. We thank our associations and club volunteers for their efforts, as we acknowledge it takes time and planning to ensure the safest sporting experience for all.
