From Charlemagne to Hitler: The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and its Symbolism Dagmar Paulus (University College London) [email protected] 2 The fabled Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire is a striking visual image of political power whose symbolism influenced political discourse in the German-speaking lands over centuries. Together with other artefacts such as the Holy Lance or the Imperial Orb and Sword, the crown was part of the so-called Imperial Regalia, a collection of sacred objects that connotated royal authority and which were used at the coronations of kings and emperors during the Middle Ages and beyond. But even after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the crown remained a powerful political symbol. In Germany, it was seen as the very embodiment of the Reichsidee, the concept or notion of the German Empire, which shaped the political landscape of Germany right up to National Socialism. In this paper, I will first present the crown itself as well as the political and religious connotations it carries. I will then move on to demonstrate how its symbolism was appropriated during the Second German Empire from 1871 onwards, and later by the Nazis in the so-called Third Reich, in order to legitimise political authority. I The crown, as part of the Regalia, had a symbolic and representational function that can be difficult for us to imagine today. On the one hand, it stood of course for royal authority. During coronations, the Regalia marked and established the transfer of authority from one ruler to his successor, ensuring continuity amidst the change that took place. -

I certify that this thesis contains no documents previously written or published by anyone except where due reference is referenced in the dissertation itself. i Abstract This thesis is a contribution to two bodies of scholarship: first, the historical understanding of the modernisation process in Siam, and in particular the role of sport in the gradual pacification of violent forms of behaviour; second, one of the central bodies of scholarship used to analyse sport sociologically, the work of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning on sport and the civilising process. Previous studies of the emergence of a more civilised form of behaviour in modern Siam highlight the imitation of Western civilised conducts in political and sporting contexts, largely overlooking the continued role of violence in this change in Siamese behaviour from the pre- modern to modern periods. This thesis examines the historical evidence which shows that, from around the 1900s, Siamese elites engaged in deliberate projects to civilise prevalent non-elites’ aggressive conducts. This in turn has implications for the Eliasian understanding of sports and civilising process, which emphasises their unplanned development alongside political and economic changes in Europe, at the expense of grasping the deliberate interventions of the Siamese elites. -

American Family, Oriental Curiosity: The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S. Society Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joseph Andrew Orser Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, Adviser John Brooke Alan Gallay Copyright by Joseph Andrew Orser 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the cultural and social spaces that conjoined brothers Chang and Eng Bunker occupied, interrogating the insights their lives offer into nineteenth-century ideas of race, class, gender, and respectability. Chang and Eng were conjoined twins of Chinese descent whose stage name, the Siamese Twins, derived from the country of their birth. The brothers toured the United States as “Oriental” curiosities from 1829 to 1839, and then settled in North Carolina as farmers, becoming slaveholders, marrying white sisters, and eventually fathering twenty-one children between them. In 1849, the twins returned to touring, this time taking two daughters along with them; until their deaths in 1874, Chang and Eng exhibited themselves and their offspring, touring as the Siamese Twins and Children. Through promotional literature, personal correspondence, visual images and newspaper reports, this work traces the evolution of public discourse about the twins and their families, contributing to other considerations of the twins and the course of American Orientalism. This dissertation goes further, however, by introducing early Asian Americans to considerations of the turbulent terrain of class and respectability in the 1830s and 1840s; the increasingly divisive debates over slavery, nativism, and sectionalism; and the tensions of national reunion in the years following the Civil War. -

This issue of the Journal of the Siam Society commemorates the auspicious Seventh Cycle Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 5 December 2011. His Majesty has graciously served as Patron of the Siam Society since 1950. The Siam Society wishes His Majesty a long life and lasting happiness. The cover of this issue shows the Royal Crest Commemorating the Seventh Cycle. His Majesty the King’s initials – Pho Po Ro – in the middle are in golden yellow, signifying the day of birth (a Monday) of His Majesty. They are bordered in gold on a blue background, surrounded by a circular frame in golden yellow, signifying that His Majesty the King is at the center of Thai hearts throughout the country. Above the royal initials is the number 9, meaning the ninth monarch of the House of Chakri. The number is under the Great Crown of Victory, one of the royal regalia and a symbol of the reigning monarch. The royal initials are flanked by two lotus-bud tops in gold under the seven-tiered umbrellas of state. On the outside of the lotus-bud tops, and circling behind the initials, is a curved frame with designs in gold on a green background, the color of might, representing the birth of His Majesty and also meaning fertility and peacefulness. Below the royal initials is a white running rabbit, which means the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s Seventh-Cycle birthday anniversary, coinciding with the Year of the Rabbit. The rabbit is featured on a blue background, with a running scroll design, symbolizing the progress of Thailand under the auspices of His Majesty the King. -

The Royal Regalia (22/4/2019) The major royal regalia, or the Five Royal Regalia, are regarded as the most important symbols of kingship presented to the new monarch at the coronation ceremony. They include (1) the Great Crown of Victory (Phra Maha Phichai Mongkut), (2) the Royal Sword of Victory (Phra Saeng Khan Chaisi), (3) the Royal Scepter (Than Phra Khon), (4) the Royal Fan and Fly Whisk (Walawichani), and (5) the Royal Slippers (Chalong Phrabat Choeng Ngon). The Great Crown of Victory is the royal regalia in the category of royal accessories presented to the monarch by the Chief Brahmin, Phra Maha Ratchakhru, in the coronation ceremony. This royal accessory was made during the reign of King Rama I. It is inlaid with gold and studded with nine precious gemstones; the biggest one, embedded on top, is named Maha Wichian Mani. But later, King Rama IV decided to follow the practice of the European royal households; the dignity of the king was recognized when he was wearing a crown. Since then, the Great Crown of Victory has become the most important item in the royal regalia. The Royal Sword of Victory is the royal regalia in the category of royal weapons, presented to the monarch by the Chief Brahmin in the coronation ceremony after the Great Crown of Victory. It represents wisdom in ruling the country. The story has been told that the sword was found in 1784 by a Cambodian fisherman at the very bottom of a lake in Siem Reap. -

BRAND MERIT, HIERARCHY AND ROYAL GIFT-GIVING IN TRADITIONAL THAI SOCIETY Festivals, rites and processions, already the subject of extensive comment in the reports of early travellers and ethnologists, have retained their great importance in the analysis of traditional states. Anthropologists in search of manifestations of political power have continued to focus on "religious" rites, cremations and festivals, i.e., on phenomena which ostensibly have nothing much to do with administration and politics. Though Geertz has complained that in their concern for these matters anthropologists are "like theologians firmly dedicated to proving the indubitable",1 he himself also emphasizes that it is in ritual that we can find "the public dramatization of ruling obsessions",2 inter alia the obsession with specific "secular" social ties. To study "obsessions" or, in different terms, "value systems" via ritual has an obvious advantage: the strength of the obsession, as Norbert Elias has hinted, can be correlated with the length, frequency and elaborate- ness of the ritual.3 When one looks at the numerous festivals which occurred in traditional Thai society with these considerations in mind, an obvious target for analysis springs to the fore, viz. the Thot Khatin festival. Thot Khatin means literally the "laying down of the holy cloth", or the presentation of monastic robes. -

In search of liberalism: Ideological traditions, translations, and troubles in Thailand TOMAS LARSSON University of Cambridge Abstract The history of political thought in Southeast Asia has overwhelmingly focused on nationalism and socialism/Marxism. Little has been written about the fate of liberalism in the region. This is in stark contrast with the literature that in recent years has emerged on liberal political thought in South Asian and East Asian contexts. Seeking to make a Southeast Asian contribution to this literature, this article asks: Is there liberalism in Thailand? To answer the question, it surveys the existing literature on Thai political thought; outlines the history of the reproduction of the Western liberal canon in Thai translation; and takes stock of contemporary political debates. What does it find? First, that while one might find liberals in Thai history, there is no liberalism. Second, that serious intellectual engagement with liberal political thought occurs comparatively late and remains modest in Thailand, but that Thai politics nevertheless has been stalked by the spectre of Rousseau for more than eight decades. Third, and finally, that some Thai intellectual historians and other writers have responded to the country’s recent political troubles – in the form of increasing political polarization, intractable and often violent conflict, two military coups, and the ill health and subsequent death of King Bhumibol – by laying the intellectual groundwork for a liberal form of Thai nationalism. Likewise, in the early stages of the Cold War, when almost all Southeast Asian countries saw the eruption of Communist insurgencies, scholars sought to explain the exception of Thailand (Thompson and Adloff 1950).
