MEDIA RELEASE Onefootball and Manchester City Launch Exciting MEDIA RELEASE Onefootball and Manchester City launch exciting content cooperation Editorial content from official club website now also available on Onefootball BERLIN, 9th of April 2020 – Manchester City Football Club is the first club worldwide to distribute its editorial content on the world's largest football media platform, Onefootball. What started as a soft launch with the club in 2019, now marks the global kick-off of the Onefootball Club Network. The content cooperation between Onefootball and Manchester City sees the club’s editorial content, which is published on mancity.com, natively integrated into the news stream of Onefootball users, which makes the content easily accessible in the Onefootball app and website. This is made possible through a bespoke technical setup, which connects the Onefootball platform to City's Content Management System and ensures that all club news appear automatically and simultaneously on both the club website and Onefootball. The content integration applies to six languages made available by the club (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Indonesian) and every article is clearly earmarked as official club content through the incorporation of the Manchester City logo. Through a close cooperation between the editorial teams of Manchester City and Onefootball, significant articles such as breaking news or new signings may instantly be sent by push notification to all Onefootball app users or segmented user groups (e.g. exclusively to Manchester City fans). Thanks to this creative partnership, Onefootball is, for the first time, adding original club content to its comprehensive content offering and enables Manchester City to reach the generation of “mobile-first” City fans wherever they are. Lucas von Cranach, CEO and founder of Onefootball, commented: "We are extremely pleased that we were able to launch this project with a partner like Manchester City, a leader in the field of digital innovation. The integration of official club content in our app is a milestone in the evolution of our product. We will keep on innovating and look forward to welcoming more clubs to our network in the near future.” * * * About the Onefootball Network The integration of external content partners is part of Onefootball's vision to create a holistic user experience. The Onefootball Network offers various rights holders (e.g. clubs, broadcasters) through a technical connection, the opportunity to automatically and natively embed their editorial or audio-visual content into the Onefootball app and website. Over the past six months, more than 200 independent content creators have successfully been added to the platform. Since then, more than 13,000 news articles in six different languages are published on a weekly basis by Onefootball Network partners. About Onefootball Onefootball reaches more than 60 million football fans worldwide every month, making it the most popular media platform for young football fans. With a 24-hour Newsroom operating in six languages and its own video studio, Onefootball provides the young generation of football fans with football news, breaking news, live scores, live streaming, features and videos on its own Onefootball platform and on social media channels such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Founded eleven years ago and one of the world's first 1,000 applications in the Apple App Store in 2009, the company now has 220 employees at its headquarters in Berlin and regional offices in London, New York, Mexico City and São Paulo. The Onefootball app has been awarded several times, most recently in 2017, as the best app product by Apple and Google. • A Case Study of Strategic Failure in Professional Team Sports
The Triumph of Vanity over Sanity? A Case Study of Strategic Failure in Professional Team Sports Bill Gerrard Leeds University Business School, UK Research in strategic management often tends to focus on competitive success - how organisations utilise their resources and/or market position to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. However cases in which organisations suffer strategic failures can be equally illuminating. This case study focuses on a leading English professional football club, Leeds United, and investigates how sporting success was transformed into sporting and financial crisis within a 21-month period as a consequence of a series of strategic financial decisions by the senior executive management. It is argued that Leeds United represents a classic example of the Icarus phenomenon of flying too high and getting burnt - an organisation that over-extended itself in pursuit of its overly-ambitious growth objectives and suffered a financial meltdown when it failed to maintain a high level of performance. The research objectives of the study are: (i) to explain the proximate financial causes of the sporting and financial crisis; (ii) to investigate the governance structure of the organisation to locate the fundamental causes of the current crisis; and (iii) to use the research findings to actively influence the organisational changes required to resolve the crisis. The study draws on three principal theoretical frameworks: the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, stakeholder theory and corporate finance. The RBV (e.g. Barney and Arikan, 2002) explains sustainable competitive advantage as the consequence of the firm's deployment of its strategic endowment of rare and valuable resources that imperfectly imitable or substitutable.

  • Theory of the Beautiful Game: the Unification of European Football
Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 54, No. 3, July 2007 r 2007 The Author Journal compilation r 2007 Scottish Economic Society. Published by Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford, OX4 2DQ, UK and 350 Main St, Malden, MA, 02148, USA THEORY OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: THE UNIFICATION OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL John Vroomann Abstract European football is in a spiral of intra-league and inter-league polarization of talent and wealth. The invariance proposition is revisited with adaptations for win- maximizing sportsman owners facing an uncertain Champions League prize. Sportsman and champion effects have driven European football clubs to the edge of insolvency and polarized competition throughout Europe. Revenue revolutions and financial crises of the Big Five leagues are examined and estimates of competitive balance are compared. The European Super League completes the open-market solution after Bosman. A 30-team Super League is proposed based on the National Football League. In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team. FSartre I Introduction The beauty of the world’s game of football lies in the dynamic balance of symbiotic competition. Since the English Premier League (EPL) broke away from the Football League in 1992, the EPL has effectively lost its competitive balance. The rebellion of the EPL coincided with a deeper media revolution as digital and pay-per-view technologies were delivered by satellite platform into the commercial television vacuum created by public television monopolies throughout Europe. EPL broadcast revenues have exploded 40-fold from h22 million in 1992 to h862 million in 2005 (33% CAGR).

  • Beitar and Beyond: the United Arab Emirates and Qatar’S Use of Football As Soft Power
POLICY OUTLOOK POLICY OUTLOOK DISCUSSION PAPER Beitar and Beyond: The United Arab Emirates and Qatar’s use of Football as Soft Power Anna Murphy (Howard Walker - Anadolu Agency) In 2008, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, formed the City Football Group as a branch of the private investment and development company known as the Abu Dhabi United Group to facilitate the purchase of English football team Manchester City F.C.. In 2012, Qatar Sports Investments, a subsidiary of the Qatar sovereign wealth fund, purchased the French team Paris Saint-Germain. In the decade since these acquisitions, Manchester City and PSG have become fascinating and lucrative examples of soft power for the two Gulf states. In September of 2020, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, a lesser-known member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, purchased a 50 per cent stake in Beitar Jerusalem F.C, an Israeli football team. This investment has shed light on the shifting economic relations between Israel and the UAE and highlighted the unique influence of football in Israeli politics. This policy outlook examines the UAE and Qatar’s investment in football clubs in Europe and Israel as two distinct and developing modes of soft power.
