Cardinals have begun calling as the days grow longer; they respond to increased daylight more than warmer temperatures. They may be in uenced by increased articial light as well. A snowy owl visited North Mayfair in November, and in February an unidentied owl rested in a red cedar in my yard. Watch for owls at dawn and dusk. Cooper's hawks have been very active in the neighbor- hood, offering good photo ops, as they aren't shy when hunting. A large coyote hybrid (perhaps a dog or wolf hybrid) occasionally passes through LaBagh, and other coyotes walk our streets at night from time to time. February and March are the crunch time for squirrels, as their food stashes are buried in snow or used up, and tender shoots aren't yet sprouting. Expect fewer squirrels this spring. March Watch: if the snow is gone, red-winged blackbird males arrive to stake claim to territories. Females will arrive a few weeks later to choose the best nesting sites; other early birds, like migratory robins, thrushes, kildeer, fox sparrows, and sandhill cranes; cardinals, mourning doves, starlings and sparrows calling and nest-building; Çanada geese and mallards pairing up; crocuses blooming, willows greening up; painted turtles mating if it's warm; Vernal Equinox on the 20th, when the sun crosses the equator, so days and nights are of equal length. April Watch: millions of birds migrate through the Chicago area; our winter juncos y north, but are replaced by many other species, such as song sparrows and the rst ickers; early woodland owers bloom (trout lilies, spring beauties, bluebells); the wetland and lagoon come alive, with Ameri- can toads calling, carp mating, water insects active again; the rst dragon ies and butter ies; blue herons return, along with migrating coots, wood ducks, blue winged teal, and other aquatic birds. Flashback Fact In March 2010, North Mayfair was named one of the “Best Old House” neighborhoods in the Midwest by This Old House magazine. The magazine’s website says: “Like Polish sausage and deep-dish pizza, the Craftsman bungalow is both ubiquitous and beloved in Chicago. And one of the few places you can still score one for a reasonable price is North Mayfair.” 4129 W. LAWRENCE AVE.
