We understand the significance of this process and are happy to help and encourage as much as we can. Accidents do happen and policies have been created to ensure a happy and healthy environment for everyone: *Children under the age of 3 and not completely toilet trained, must wear a pull-up diaper and please bring a spare. If you forget and an accident occurs, we will provide one at a charge of $2.00. *Please provide a full change of clothing each time your child visits the playroom. Please feel free to approach us if you have any questions or suggestions.

Sick Children Those who care for your child are concerned about the children’s health and safety. Children should not attend the playroom or programs with the following: • Fever (temperature over 38c) • Respiratory (onset of colds with watery eyes and clear nasal discharge & sneezing colds with yellow/green nasal discharge and/or prolonged cough) • Behavior (if a child looks or acts differently, e.g. unusually tired, pale, lacks appetite, vomiting or diarrhea) • Vomiting or diarrhea. • Rash: undiagnosed rash other than mild diaper or heat rash • Inflamed mouth & throat • Other (Anything else known to be contagious – chicken pox, pink eye, thrush)

Appropriate Behavior: Some children go through a stage such as scratching, biting, pinching, hitting etc. Please notify the staff so that we can provide the best possible care for your child and for the other children in the playroom. If your child’s behavior continues and we are unable to resolve the issue, you may need to postpone visits to the playroom for a short period of time. This postponement will NOT happen without consulting the director or management. Parent Policies & Procedures: In order to provide your child with the best possible care please: • Keep goodbyes short. We have found that crying children usually settle down within a few minutes of their parents leaving. The playroom staff will come and get you if there is a problem. • Clearly label all of your child’s belongings, especially bottles, soothers, food items, jackets, snow pants, bags and boots. Staff is not responsible for lost items. • Please mention any allergies your child may have. • All children must be signed in on the attendance sheet and we ask that you provide a cell phone number. This sheet is very important, as it will be taken with us if we ever have to evacuate the building. • Notify the staff if you wish to make changes to your child’s information sheet. such as: phone numbers, emergency contacts, medical conditions, or an alternate emergency contact person. • Please pack a change of clothes for your child as accidents do happen.

First Time Visits Before booking your child for their first visit to the playroom, it may be helpful to come in for a pre-visit to help your child prepare for the transition. We ask that you complete a playroom registration form so that we have emergency contacts and allergy information on file. When you arrive we will show you how to sign your child in, review account billings and discuss any questions you may have.

If your child is having difficulties with the transition, we suggest starting them off slow. Developing a routine will help your child be more comfortable in their new environment. First two weeks: Bring your child every day for 15 minutes. Third Week: Bring your child everyday for 30 minutes ***As your child gets more comfortable with the new environment you may increase the time by 15 minutes.

Holiday Schedule The Playroom will be closed on the following holidays: September 2 - Labour Day October 14 - Thanksgiving November 11 – Remembrance Day December 25 - Christmas Day December 26 - Boxing Day January 1 - New Years Day

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Instructor: Calvin Yeong Calvin received his blue belt in 2009 and started assisting his instructor and teaching one-on-one private instruction. In 2010 he began teaching his own classes at the Club. He's worked as a teacher for Sylvan Learning Centre and a child care worker for the YMCA before becoming a personal fitness trainer. Much like his journey in jiu-jitsu, he's constantly learning something new about the human body and what we can do to continually improve it. He enjoys jiu-jitsu because you never stop learning and having solid fundamentals can make you a world champion.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu taught under the organization of Behring Jiu-Jitsu strives to preserve the self-defence aspect of the art, while maintaining the relevancy of the training to the sport scene. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches one not to meet force with force, but instead rely on leverage and positioning to put oneself out of harm's way, while providing options to intelligently deal with a confrontation. As such, this art is suitable for people of all ages, physical abilities, and fitness goals.

Children’s Jiu-jitsu Jujutsu has often been described as an art of last resort to be used when reason has failed to resolve a conflict. This makes it an excellent choice for children’s self-defence, teaching children not to hit, but how to avoid being hit. Children are led through a variety of drills, exercises and scenarios designed to help them develop their awareness and ability to successfully escape an attack or confrontation. Wibit Warrior Games Saturday, November 9 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. 7 & under must be accompanied by an adult KARATE Instructors: Sensei Craig Pettie, 4th Dan (degree black belt), Sensei Jason Wlodarcz, 2nd Dan, Sensei Raye Willms, 1st Dan and Sensei Janet Ross, 1st Dan.

Starting with only five students in 2004, the Derrick Karate Club has exploded into a popular program teaching traditional karate, competitive sport karate and modern street self-defense. With numerous instructors, students are taught in small groups in a well-balanced and safe learning environment. Karate is a foundational activity that assists with basic and complicated coordination, balance, strength, endurance, timing, speed, and flexibility. Students gain confidence, respect, and discipline, which are demonstrated in their successes inside and outside the classroom. Combined, the physical and mental training enables students to deal with life’s daily challenges to rare self-defense situations.

Our instructors are skilled karate practitioners with many years of training, competition, and coaching. Sensei Craig Pettie has been teaching youth programs in the University area since 1991. Sensei Pettie started karate in September 1989 and received his Shodan, 1st degree black belt, in August 1992. He has a psychology degree from the University of Alberta, and worked with children for seven years at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in a variety of settings (Psychology, School Rehab and ). In 2004, Sensei Pettie began a new career in computers, and has been working as a Systems Analyst/Developer since.

Sensei Janet Ross achieved her black belt on May 4, 2013. Karate plays a large role in her life — this year will mark the thirteenth year of training, with many more to come. However, she is very busy with her studies to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, at the University of Alberta. Starting the second year of her studies, she is excited for new clinical experiences and opportunities.

Sensei Raye Willms also achieved her black belt this year, after over ten years of training. Kelsey Mramor (previously Ross) recruited her, and Sensei Janet to help her teach the karate program at the Derrick club in 2008, and since then Raye has found a passion for teaching karate to her students. Raye has completed her first year of sciences at the University of Alberta this year and will be continuing in September.

Sensei Jason Wlodarczyk, 2nd Dan, has been training since 1995 with the Bushido Karate Aassociation under Sensei Freeman and Sensei Pettie. He has been teaching since 2004 as a junior instructor, and received the rank of Shodan in May of 2006. Jason taught with Sensei Kelsey Ross at the Derrick Wado- Kai Karate Club since 2006. While continuing his study of karate and achieving the rank of Nidan in May of 2012, he completed a B.Sc. in Nano-Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta in June of 2012.

Radial Shockwave Therapy at The Derrick Spa Radial Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive alternative to surgery. It is the application of a high-energy acoustic pulse transmitted into the tissue of the affected area of the body Each Radial Shockwave treatment works to increase the metabolic activity around the site of pain or discomfort, stimulating the reabsorption of irritative calcium deposits in tendons and stimulating the body's natural healing process, thus reducing pain. Radial Shockwave Therapy is an excellent alternative for people with chronic pain who have exhausted all other treatment avenues. To Book contact Uran directly at 780-668-3260 or [email protected]
