3 1 Refinery and Petrochemical Processes 1.1 Introduction The combination of high demand for electric cars and higher automobile engine effi- ciency in the future will mean less conversion of petroleum into fuels. However, the demand for petrochemicals is forecast to rise due to the increase in world popula- tion. With this, it is expected that modern and more innovative technologies will be developed to serve the growth of the petrochemical market. In a refinery process, petroleum is converted into petroleum intermediate prod- ucts, including gases, light/heavy naphtha, kerosene, diesel, light gas oil, heavy gas oil, and residue. From these intermediate refinery product streams, several fuels such as fuel gas, liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, auto diesel, and other heavy products such as lubricants, bunker oil, asphalt, and coke are obtained. In addition, these petroleum intermediates can be further processed and separated into products for petrochemical applications. In this chapter, petroleum will be introduced first. Petrochemicals will be intro- duced in the second part of the chapter. Petrochemicals – the main subject of this book – will address three major areas, (i) the production of the seven cornerstone petrochemicals: methane and synthesis gas, ethylene, propylene, butene, benzene, toluene, and xylenes; (ii) the uses of the seven cornerstone petrochemicals, and (iii) the technology to separate petrochemicals into individual components. 1.2 Petroleum Petroleum is derived from the Latin words “petra” and “oleum,” which means “rock” and “oil,” respectively. Petroleum also is known as crude oil or fossil fuel. It is a thick, flammable, yellow-to-black mixture of gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons formed from the remains of plants and animals. -

They work with the processes of • Phase changes and the many energy transformations and transfers involved in that physical change; • chemical change and the energy it releases. LESSON OVERVIEW: The fractional distillation of crude oil is featured. This major fossil fuel of the modern age is viewed as an example of stored chemical energy. Alcohol and water are separated and recaptured by taking advantage of the differences in the two substances’ boiling points. The many components of crude oil are explored and students are introduced to organic chemical formulas, characteristics of changes in phases, and laboratory distillation procedures. GRADE-LEVEL APPROPRIATENESS: This Level II Physical Setting, technology education lesson is intended for students in grades 5–8. MATERIALS (per group) Safety goggles (per person) Lab apron (per person) Bunsen burner Ring stand with utility clamp Metal pan 3 medium test tubes Test tube rack Boiling chip 2-hole stopper 10 cm glass tubing with 90o bend Thermometer 15 mL of isopropyl alcohol–water mixture nyserda.ny.gov/School-Power-Naturally Stirring rod Graduated cylinder Grease pencil or marker 4 paper strips, 10 cm x 1 cm 60 cm rubber tubing SAFETY Students should be made familiar with proper laboratory safety procedures including the location of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and safety showers (where available). Instruct students regarding the proper and safe use of Bunsen burners and matches, and stress the importance of keeping the volatile components of the fractional distillation away from the flame during the collection of distillates. -

The Drake Well Memorial Park
THE DRAKE WELL MEMORIAL PARK BY PAUL H. GIDDENS Curator, Drake Well Memorial Park, Titusville, Pennsylvania O N AUGUST 27, 1859, Colonel E. L. Drake completed the first v well ever drilled for petroleum about two and one-half miles south of Titusville, Pennsylvania. The completion of this oil well marks the beginning of the petroleum industry, not only in the United States but in the world, and Titusville became its birthplace. From the time Drake completed his well until 1914 various movements originated in the northwestern Pennsylvania oil region to honor Colonel Drake and to memorialize this epoch-making event. In the main, these movements have taken three forms; one proposed to erect a monument to Colonel Drake; a second pro- posed to preserve and mark the site of the Drake well; and the third contemplated something more than simply marking the site of the well with an inanimate marker. The first movement realized its goal on October 4, 1901, when a magnificent monument to the memory of Colonel Drake, the generous gift of Mr. Henry H. Rogers, was unveiled and dedi- cated in Woodlawn Cemetery, Titusville. Within a short time, the body of Colonel Drake was exhumed at Bethlehem, Pennsyl- vania, and removed to Woodlawn Cemetery. The second movement, one for preserving and marking the site of the Drake Well, was inaugurated by Canadohta Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Titusville. The first prob- lem in connection with this movement was to secure the land upon which the site of the Drake Well was located. Mr. David Emery, a pioneer oil producer and one of those interested in erecting a suitable monument on the site, had bought the land, and drilled the hole down to the third sand. -

CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a five-year preservation plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW Imagining Our Future: Preserving Pennsylvania’s Collections, published in August 2009, includes an in-depth analysis of conditions and needs at Pennsylvania’s collecting institutions, a detailed preservation plan to improve collections care throughout the state, and a five-year implementation timetable (2010-2015). The analysis concludes that many of Pennsylvania’s most important historic holdings must be considered at risk. Millions of items comprise these collections, and the financial resources available to care for them are limited and shrinking. Pennsylvania is a state vibrant with world-class art museums, libraries, historic sites. Arts and culture play a substantial role in creating business, jobs, and bringing revenue into the state and stewardship of its artifacts is too important —to the state, to the people, to the history of country—to be ignored. This call to action is a rallying cry for all future generations of Pennsylvanians. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in close partnership with three leading preservation organizations, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations (PFMHO), and LYRASIS, the Conservation Center for Arts & Historic Artifacts organized and led the assessment and planning process. The project was capably guided by a Task Force with representatives from the Office of (PA) Commonwealth Libraries, the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council, the Pennsylvania Caucus of the Mid- Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, Pennsylvania State University, the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. -

Prevention policies and control measures that may explain changes were surveyed. The aim was to evaluate how the application of of Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series OHSAS 18001.04 principles as well as Environmental protection Agency EPA and European Oil Company Organisation for Environment, Health and Safety CONCAWE practices have influenced air concentrations. Benzene air concentrations declined in 11 of 17 units, six of which were associated with declining exposures. Benzene air concentrations declined across all units on average by 46%. This amounts to an average yearly decline of 1.7%. TPH air concentrations declined in 10 of 17 units, seven of which were associated with declining exposures. The average decline in TPH air concentrations was 49%, corresponding to 1.3% per year. As a result, average working day exposure in 10 of 17 units have declined significantly and today, benzene and TPH exposure in most units are well below 10% of the current Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL8h:s). -

PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL AND MUSEUM COMMISSION MARCH 4, 2020 MINUTES The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission met on March 4, 2020 in the 5th Floor Board Room of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The following Commissioners were present: Nancy Moses – Chair, Ophelia Chambliss, Andrew Masich, Philip Zimmerman, William Lewis, Robert Savakinus, David Schuyler, Glenn Miller (Department of Education) and Representative Robert Matzie. Fred Powell, Kate Flessner for Senator Joseph Scarnati, Senator Andrew Dinniman and Representative Parke Wentling participated via conference call. The following staff were present: Andrea Lowery, Howard Pollman, David Bohanick, David Carmicheal, Andrea MacDonald, Brenda Reigle, Beth Hager and Karen Galle.
