Tracks from Classic R&B and Soul Label Philly Groove Records Now Available Online for Licensed Sampling via Tracklib

Reservoir Turns to Tracklib to Make Iconic Catalog Available for Next Generation of Music Creators

July 19, 2018 – Tracklib, the world’s first and only online crate-digging and music sample clearance service featuring full tracks from popular artists, has signed a deal with Reservoir to bring the iconic Philly Groove Records catalog to the service. Producers, DJs, and other music creators on Tracklib will now be able to search for and find hit tracks from label artists , First Choice, Sound Experience, Coupe De Villes, Ben Aiken, and more; purchase and download full-quality WAV files to use for sampling; and then easily license their new song containing samples via Tracklib’s pre-determined rate structure. Many tracks also feature separate stems for vocals, guitar, drums, and other instruments — including 19 for First Choice’s “I’ll Stay Right Here” alone — and several are previously unheard alternate takes, giving creators exclusive content to work with for their samples.

“The Philly Groove Records catalog is a treasure trove of old-school that is ripe for sampling and reinterpretation by today’s artists,” said Pär Almqvist, Co-Founder and CEO of Tracklib. “Now that they are easily searchable and licensable via Tracklib, these songs are poised to find new life as the bedrock for innovative new tracks in a variety of genres.”

“When we picked up the Philly Groove Records catalog back in 2012, our goal was to ensure that these works would live on and breathe new life for future generations,” said Faith Newman, SVP of A&R and Catalog Development at Reservoir. “We are excited to be partnering with Tracklib to make these recordings available for sampling and are confident that they will remain vital for years to come.”

Founded in 1967 by Stan Watson, Philly Groove Records was instrumental in defining the Soul sound. Its roster, handpicked by famed producer and , scored a run of hit songs in the late ’60s and early ’70s, led by The Delfonics’ “La-La (Means I Love You)” and “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” which both reached the Top 10 on the chart, and First Choice’s “Armed and Extremely Dangerous,” which reached the Top 30. Philly Groove closed in 1974. The label’s catalog was acquired by Reservoir in 2012. Since then, they have released a variety of compilation albums featuring the tracks and teamed with Philadelphia-based Drexel University to host the Uncovering the Philly Groove project, where students were given unfinished Philly Groove recordings to mix and master.

Tracklib brings the experience of finding the perfect sample for an original track to the web, and then solves a problem that has been plaguing producers, DJs, and artists since the rise of sampling in Hip-Hop and Dance music over 30 years ago: how to license and pay for usages in an easy and straightforward manner.
