Christian: Do You Know Who You Are? • Part 3 Ephesians 1:7-14 I. INTRODUCTION A. Alexander 1. Alexander the Great was determined to marry a certain man's daughter 2. The father demanded a huge dowry from Alexander in exchange for her hand in marriage. 3. The ruler consented and told him to request of his treasurer whatever he wanted. 4. So he went and asked for an enormous amount. 5. The treasurer was startled and said he couldn't give him that much without a direct order. 6. Going to Alexander, he argued that even a small fraction of the money requested was sufficient as a dowry. 7. Alexander replied, "No, let him have it all. I like that fellow. He does me honor. He treats me like a king and proves by what he asks that he believes me to be both rich and generous." 8. The Holy Spirit wants you and I to know the greatness and extent of the spiritual treasure that is ours in Christ a. and knowing, he wants us to lay hold of them b. there is no need or reason for us to live like spiritual paupers when in Christ we have all 9. Just as that man asked of Alexander in proportion to Alexander's wealth, we should go to the throne of God's grace and present petitions that express honorable views of the love, riches, and bounty of our King! B. Open Your Eyes 1. This is our third week in this series as we seek to understand who and what we are by virtue of our faith in Christ.

Premise The aim of the present work is to shed some light on a long-standing mistery, the identity of the Sabians. Five years ago, indeed, we published a short study just on the same subject 1 where we presented a theory that nobody else had ever advanced: the substantial equivalence of the Sabians with the loose religious group of the God- Fearers 2 (or, even better, God-Worshippers, i.e. devotees of the Most-High God 3), whose importance and wide 4 diffusion geographically and chronologically is now accepted 5.

  • Lucifer's Only Mention in the Bible Is at Isaiah 14:12. the Marginal Notes Of
LUCIFER, WHO OR WHAT? ROBERT L. ALDEN, PH.D.* Lucifer's only mention in the Bible is at Isaiah 14:12. The marginal notes of many Bibles direct attention to Luke 10:18 where we read Jesus' words: "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." I do not approve of such a connection and will seek to show why in the following paragraphs. The translation of the phrase helel ben shachar in Isaiah 14:12 is not easy. The hen shachar is not the problem.1 It means "son of dawn" or the like. The morning star is the son of the morning. The Hebrew idiom ben —"son" means anything closely related to or dependent on or described by the following word in the absolute state.2 But is helel a name? Is it a common noun? Is it a verb? The word helel appears in Zechariah 11:2 in parallel with a verb whose radical letters are yll. Both thus mean "howl" or "yell" and are apparently onomatopoetic. In Ezekiel 21:12 (v. 17 in Hebrew) we have a similar situation. There helel is parallel to zq which means "cry." Jeremiah 47:2 has a related form (hiph'il) and there the word is rendered "wail." The Syriac version, among others, so understood the word in question. "How are you fallen from heaven! Howl in the morning:.. ."3 More translators and commentators chose to render the word as a noun however. The Greek has heosphoros and the Latin lucifer. Both mean "light carrier." The translators of the Septuagint and the Vulgate along with the leading Rabbins and most of the early Christian writers understood the word as a derivative of hll, "to shine." Hence it means "bright one" or "shining one." This, of course, fits best with the rest of the phrase ben shachar, "son of dawn." Tertullian, commenting on Isaiah 14:12, said, "This must mean the devil..."4 Origen, too, readily identified "Lucifer" with Satan.5 John Milton's Paradise Lost has contributed to the dissemination of this erroneous notion: •Assistant Professor of Old Testament, Conservative Baptist Seminary, Denver, Colo- rado.

  • Church History
Church History While the effects of slavery was still fresh in the minds of many African American people, a small group of dedicated Christians who trusted God to release them from the bounds of captivity, began to seek a proper place in which to praise God for ail the mighty works they had celebrated. Out of the small house gatherings, arose the idea of a central house of worship. A place where God's people could gather on the Lord's day and sing, pray, and hear God's word. This worthy endeavor took the strength and courage of the entire community as the church began to move from vision to reality. Land was purchased by the trustees in 1876 and again in 1917. The trustees listed on the deed that is dated April 3, 1876 are Lawson Wright and Berry Williams of Granville County. This first tract was for the erection of a one room structure that was called Saint Peter's Methodist Episcopal Church. This first church was located on Hillsboro Street in Oxford, North Carolina next door to the present BP gas station. The other tract of land may have been purchased for future expansions or parking. During Reverend Newsome's pastorate the church was remodeled and two wings were added to the sides of the church. There was an active Epworth League Club, which was an organization for young people. In the absence of a Missionary Circle, the women met with other church women in the area. Some of the ministers who served in the first structure were: Rev.

Greek texts and English translations of the Bible: a comparison and contrast of the Textus Receptus Greek New Testament of the 16th century and the Alexandrian text of Westcott and Hort (19th century) and Aland and Metzger (20th century) concerning variant texts that pertain to the orthodox Christology of the Council of Nicea, A.D. 325. Master of Arts (History), December 2002, 155 pp., 149 titles. The argument of this paper is that certain salient passages in the New Testament concerning Christology, as it was defined in the Nicene creed in A.D. 325, reflect such orthodoxy better in the Textus Receptus Greek texts and the English translations made from them than do the Alexandrian texts. Arian theology, which was condemned as heretical at Nicea, is examined. Patristic quotations, historical texts, and arguments of the scholars are cited and traced, along with a comparison of Christological verses.

  • Epistles of Apostle Paul
Epistles of Apostle Paul Bishop Alexander (Mileant). Translated by Seraphim Larin Foreword Of all the New Testament holy authors, Apostle Paul - having written some 14 Epistles - stands out as being the most prolific in expounding instructions on Christian living. Because of the significance of their contents, they are rightfully regarded as the "second Gospel," attracting attention from both thinkers-philosophers and the ordinary faithful. The Apostles themselves did not ignore the works of their "beloved brother," who was last to convert to Christ, yet equal to them in spirit and sanctified gifts (2 Pet. 3:15-16). Presenting themselves as an important and necessary appendix to the teachings of the Gospel, the Epistles of the Apostle Paul should be the subject of an attentive and earnest study of every person that seeks a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. These Epistles are outstanding in their remarkably elevated religious thoughts, reflecting the Apostle Paul's extensive knowledge and scholarship of the Old Testament, which were equal to his profound understanding of Christ's New Testament teachings. In trying to express his deep thoughts and not finding the necessary words in the contemporary Greek lexicon to do this, Apostle Paul was compelled to create his own expressions by blending existing words to give them a new meaning. Later, these new words were widely used by Christian writers in their literary works. Correlation between Apostle Paul's teachings and his life The Epistles of Apostle Paul are the fruits of his Apostolic endeavors to uncover the teachings of Christ. They are remarkable because the Apostle does not do this in an abstract manner, but rather through a close link with the development of the churches established by him, and through his personal Apostolic labors and personal sufferings.

  • Spiritual Warfare Intro
Class: Spiritual Warfare Lesson: Introduction & Our Sovereign God Date: August 6, 2017 Term: Summer 2017 Professor: Walt Alexander INTRODUCTION What comes to your mind when you hear the words spiritual warfare? • C.S. Lewis wisely guides us in the preface of his classic book The Screwtape Letters: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”1 • So, far from being parochial subject, Clinton Arnold reminds us: “Spiritual warfare is an integral part of the entire Christian experience.”2 FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS FOR (STUDYING) SPIRITUAL WARFARE • As theologian Peter Bolt has written: “The Old Testament is practically silent about demons, then an explosion of references as Jesus appears in the biblical story—at least according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke; then there is a tiny demonic dribble into the period of history recorded by the Acts, and only an occasional drip elsewhere in the New Testament.”3 1 C.S. Lewis, Screwtape Latters, 9. 2 Clinton Arnold, Three Crucial Questions about Spiritual Warfare, 2–3. 3 Peter Bolt, “Towards a Biblical Theology of the Defeat of the Evil Powers.” !1 Class: Spiritual Warfare Lesson: Introduction & Our Sovereign God Date: August 6, 2017 Term: Summer 2017 Professor: Walt Alexander • As David Powlison wisely concludes: “God seems to think we don’t need to know all the details. God tells us what we need to know . so that we can live faithfully, courageously, and fruitfully.”4 I.
