I am lucky to have such a supportive and wonderful son. To the farmers who participated and farmers everywhere, I include this poem written by Marie Laswell to my mother around the time parents were married in the mid 1940s. Who is that Executive in Overalls? By: Marie Laswell What is a farmer? Farmers are found in fields – plowing up, seeding down, rotating from, planting to, fertilizing with, praying for, and harvesting if. Wives help them, little boys follow them, salesmen detain them, meals wait for them, weather can delay them, but nothing can stop them. A farmer is a paradox. He is an overalled executive with his office in his home. He is a scientist who uses fertilizer attachments, a purchasing agent in an old straw hat, a personnel director with grease under his fingernails, a dietician with a passion for fresh fruits and vegetables, a production expert faced with a surplus, and a manager battling a price-cost squeeze. He manages more capital than most of the business men in town. He likes sunshine, good food, country fairs, dinner at noon, auctions, his neighbors, his shirt collar unbuttoned, and above all, an above-average annual rainfall. He is not much for droughts, ditcher freeways, weeds, the eight hour day, dusty roads, development, insects, diseases, freezing weather, or helping around the house. Nobody else gets so much satisfaction out of modern plumbing, good weather, automatic furnaces, electric blankets, and home-made ice cream. Nobody else has in his jacket at one time a three bladed knife, a checkbook, a billfold, a pair of pliers and a combination memo book and general farm guide. A farmer is both Faith and Fatalist. He must have faith to meet the challenge of his capacities amid the ever-present possibility that an act of God (a late spring, an early frost, flood, drought) can bring his business to a sudden halt. You can reduce his acreage, but you can‟t diminish his optimism. Might as well put up with him. He is your friend, your competitor, your customer, your source of food and fiber. He is your countryman – a denim-dressed business-wise statesman of stature. And when he comes in at noon having spent the energy of his hopes and dreams, he can be recharged anew with the magic words…”The Markets Up”!     A NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ray Bradbury has published some twenty-seven books—novels, stories, plays, essays, and poems—since his first story appeared when he was twenty years old. He began writing for the movies in 1952—with the script for his own Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The next year he wrote the screenplays for It Came from Outer Space and Moby Dick. And in 1961 he wrote Orson Welles's narration for King of Kings.     Cambridge University Press 0521834589 - Othello Edited by Julie Hankey Excerpt More information INTRODUCTION Over the last twenty years or so, Othello has leapt into focus as a play for our times. Its story of ‘us and them’ (or rather ‘him’), of brute racism and misogyny, of miscegenation, sexual anxiety and domestic violence – all this seems, with uncanny prescience, to speak directly to us now. At certain moments and places and with certain actors (e.g. in 1943 in the USA with Robeson; in apartheid South Africa with John Kani) the racism within the play has resonated so loudly with the racism outside, that the fit between the seventeenth and the twentieth centuries has seemed complete. ‘Well, I ask you’, wrote Janet Suzman, who directed John Kani, ‘is there a subject on earth which Shakespeare hasn’t thought of first? It is as if he is toying with the theory of apartheid four hundred years before the policy was cooked up.’1 It is often maintained in this way that Shakespeare overturns the racist stereotypes of his day. It is pointed out that the stage Moors that preceded Othello2 would have led audiences to expect a lecherous, crafty,cruel, venge- ful braggart; that the opening ribaldry of Iago and Roderigo plays to these expectations, and that Othello undercuts them as soon as he appears.3 Weare reminded that the play’s ‘demi-devil’ is not the black Othello, but the white Iago. Writing in 1987, the same year as Suzman’s production, the South African critic Martin Orkin was convinced that it was precisely because of this that the play was never taught in South African high schools – that Shakespeare was being censored as an anti-racist before his time.4 But on second thoughts, other resonances jangle.

This project has been pursued though performance and composition and is documented in the folio of recordings and the accompanying exegesis. The folio of this submission is weighted at eighty per cent and the exegesis at twenty per cent. It involves the creation of a new studio album by The Swamp Dandies. For this album the author has been songwriter, vocalist, instrumentalist, arranger, engineer and producer. In recognition of the interdependence of component stages, the exegesis provides an analytical narrative account of the entire compositional journey of the album from pre-tracking songwriting through to mastering. Utilising reflective journals and participant interviews undertaken throughout the process it documents and analyses the deliberate and “intuitive” creative methods involved in all of these tasks.
