Jonathan Peros Introduction.Pdf Jonathan PEros 16637 Hamlin St Van Nuys, CA P: 719.648.7085 E: [email protected] Otherside Entertainment, My name is Jonathan Peros, and I am excited to be submitting my materials for audio on System Shock 3. Until recently I had been working as the Audio Director, Composer, and Sound Designer for the reboot of the classic cyberpunk horror game, System Shock. For over the last two years, I have been completely immersed in System Shock audio. With as much time as I have spent exploring what System Shock means in terms of audio, I believe that I have a large reservoir of specialized knowledge for what it takes to bring System Shock to life. I've worked to define a very unique modern audio direction for System Shock that is both true to the essence of the original games, and fitting for a modern gameplay experience. I've studied all of the music and technologies that defined the musical styles of SS1 & 2, and found ways to modernize and exploit that gritty musical character for the new game. I've been in contact with Greg LoPicollo, Alexander Brandon, and Josh Randall - players who helped to pioneer the audio of the Immersive Sim in the 90s. I've collected an entire studio of specialized audio gear that suits the style of System Shock. My work so far has given me the opportunity to grow a very wide breadth of skills, from sound design chops to implementation. I have strong technical understandings of synthesis, implementation, and audio propagation systems, as well as experience in scripting and VR. Leading audio on many teams has also given me very strong organizational and communication skills, as well as creative problem solving. I am always a strong proponent for audio on teams, using my knowledge to champion a compelling audio experience to the rest of the team. I am an avid gamer myself, who always puts the player's experience before anything else. I am a game developer first, using my specialized skillset to best support making great games. I've spent the last two years in love with System Shock. On my desk sits a painting of SHODAN, next to the large wall of modular synthesizers that I've custom built to properly do justice to System Shock's audio. I would be honored to continue to be a part in bringing the System Shock series to a modern audience. Thank you for your consideration, Jonathan Peros Jonathan Peros P: 719.648.7085 E: [email protected].

  • Female and Evil: the Role Gender Plays for Villains In
2013 University of Utrecht Faculty of the Humanities Author: Terry Guijt Student number: 3622045 Supervisor: Dr. R.H. Leurs Second reader: Dr. J.I.L. Veugen Date: 9-8-2013 [FEMALE AND EVIL: THE ROLE GENDER PLAYS FOR VILLAINS IN ADVENTURE GAMES] Keywords: Philosophy of Evil, Digital Games, Gender, Stereotypes, Feminism __________________________________________________________________________ This research paper examines how female evil is represented in adventure games from 1982 till 2013 and how this representation of female evil can be understood in a cultural philosophical perspective. First, the philosophical growth of the term evil is summarized and the paper describes how media forms, such as art, literature and movies, have represented evil in the past. While these art forms focus on representation through images, sound and text, video games introduce interactivity as a new tool to represent, understand and occasionally even be evil. Observed is that female villains are represented through text, images, sound and extra diegetic material. By examining the female gender role of end bosses in digital games, the portrayal of evil is studied and it is shown that humanlike female end bosses become demonized oral villains as their representation is stereotyped with the use of symbols for evil. Only when the villain is a genderless being the female aspects of the end boss can be said to be of cultural importance. Dear reader, While the King needs to be put checkmate, it is the defeat of the Queen that causes the most relief --- Playing a game of Chess This thesis is written to conclude the master’s degree Media and Performance Studies at the University of Utrecht.

Nightdive Studios Releases New System Shock Remake Demo. While expectations for the System Shock franchise may have cooled a little following last week's report that the much-awaited System Shock 3 had been dropped by its development team and rights sold to Chinese giant Tencent, all is not terrible in the land of Shodan. Nightdive Studios, the actual holders of the franchise development rights, have just dropped a demo for the game on both Steam and GOG - a show of faith on the developers' part regarding their work of love in rebuilding the original game from the ground up. Alongside the demo (which weighs in at a mere 2.3 GB on GOG), Nightdive Studios has also released a 40 minute video showcasing gameplay on the rebooted game, including developer commentary. The developers also coordinated with Shacknews in order to release an in-depth interview regarding the development of the game and its original reception.

  • On Representations and Uses of Artificial Intelligence in Videogames
EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MEDIA STUDIES www.necsus-ejms.org Playing intelligence: On representations and uses of artificial intelligence in videogames Martin Hennig NECSUS 9 (1), Spring 2020: 151–171 URL: https://necsus-ejms.org/playing-intelligence-on-representa- tions-and-uses-of-artificial-intelligence-in-videogames/ Abstract Computer games take up and extend traditional discourses on tech- nology and artificial intelligence (AI). Moreover, representations of AI in computer games include not only narrative aspects but game me- chanics as well. This contribution focuses on what distinguishes this kind of AI representation from other medial forms, and on how dif- ferent types of AI representation can be identified within the com- puter games field. Overall, representations of AI make visible specific aspects and ideologies implied by the gameplay. From this perspec- tive, it is outlined how these representations work either as support for fantasies of self-empowerment or as an emphasis on medial de- termination; moreover, cultural functions and meanings provided in this context are highlighted. Keywords: AI, AI development, artificial intelligence, digital society, games, intelligence, narrative, video games Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining importance in the context of the general digitisation of modern society. Likewise, it is essential for dealing with con- temporary computer games in different ways. AI is used at present as a mar- keting strategy for propping up the sales of both game software and hard- ware.[1] AI is also important for gameplay, and it forms a popular motif in NECSUS – EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MEDIA STUDIES computer game narratives. The latter dimension in particular precedes re- cent technological developments, and the topic of AI has a long tradition in games.

  • A MEDITATION on LOSS WITHIN GAMES by Justin C. Tokarski A
A MEDITATION ON LOSS WITHIN GAMES By Justin C. Tokarski A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Media and Information–Master of Arts 2017 ABSTRACT A MEDITATION ON LOSS WITHIN GAMES By Justin C. Tokarski Failure is something which we are all familiar with, but when we look at games and the rules which govern them failure takes on a different form. This kind of failure, unique to games, is what I term Loss. To be truly unique to games, Loss must be the result of gamic actions taken by the player, must be constrained by the limitations of the game, and must represent a unique occurrence or state within the game. Taking these constraints into account I propose the following as a definition of Loss. Loss is a player state in a game, entered into when a ‘Loss Condition’ has been met by the direct actions of the player, wherein something valued by the player within the game is removed. This definition, upon inspection, leads to several different and unique aspects, or dimension, of Loss which provide useful tools for understanding, analyzing, and creating Loss within games. The Digital Dimension of Loss consists of the binary triggers, Loss Conditionals, which lead the game to enter a State of Loss. The Design Dimension of Loss is the method of translating Loss Conditionals into unique game events understandable to the player. The Value Dimension of Loss consists of the gamic measures of effort that are taken away from the player by Loss.
