Executive Council of Australian Jewry Text of complaint to ABC Radio National interview of Orly Noy and Sara Saleh on Monday 8 July 2019 at 7:06pm The interview can be listened to via: https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/drive/a- new-narrative-for-a-peaceful-resolution-to-the-israel-palesti/11289604 This was an interview that touched on the status and circumstances of Mizrahi (‘eastern’) Jews in Israel. The presenter was Jonathan Green, and the Executive Producer was Claudette Werden. The interviewees were Orly Noy, an Israeli born in Iran and Sara Saleh, an Australian citizen of Palestinian background. Ms Noy is presently on a tour of Australia promoting “an Arab and Middle Eastern alternative to Zionism”. The interview and the program could fairly be categorised as an “analysis of current events” for the purposes of the ABC’s Code of Practice 2019, and the accuracy standard therefore applies. The interview failed to meet that standard. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the factual errors that went unchallenged: 1. Ms Noy described Mizrachi Jews as “the Jewish communities who immigrated to Israel mainly in the early 1950s after the establishment of the State of Israel”. In fact most of the Jews who immigrated to Israel in the early 1950s were Holocaust survivors from Europe. Mizrachi Jews are Jews who were born in countries in the Middle East, including Israel. There is some debate about whether this includes Jews who came from North African countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Libya and Tunisia, but Ms Noy missed this nuance completely.

Speakers & Members of the Board * Mr. Ammar Abdulhamid Founder and Director of the Tharwa Foundation and a leading Syrian human rights and pro- democracy activist. He is a former Fellow of the Saban Centerfor Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute and co- founder of the Hands Across the Mideast Support Alliance (HAMSA). A known poet and author, he was a Fellow at the International Institute for Modern Letters in Las Vegas. He holds a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Aharon Abramowicz Former General Director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Currently a partner in the law offices of Lipa Meir and Co., he previously served as General Director of the Israeli Ministry of Justice. He was General Director of the Jewish Agency. He served as legal advisor to a number of organizations, such as the Jewish Agency, the World Zionist Federation, the World Jewish Restitution Organization and the United Israel Appeal. Cordesman Co-Director, Middle East Program Center for Strategic and International Studies April 28, 1998 Delivery Systems • The Soviet-designed Scud B (17E) guided missile currently forms the core of Iran’s ballistic missile forces -- largely as a result of the Iran-Iraq War. o Iran only acquired its Scuds in response to Iraq’s invasion. It obtained a limited number from Libya and then obtained larger numbers from North Korea. It deployed these units with a special Khatam ol-Anbya force attached to the air element of the Pasdaran. Iran fired its first Scuds in March, 1985. It fired as many as 14 Scuds in 1985, 8 in 1986, 18 in 1987, and 77 in 1988. Iran fired 77 Scud missiles during a 52 day period in 1988, during what came to be known as the "war of the cites." Sixty-one were fired at Baghdad, nine at Mosul, five at Kirkuk, one at Takrit, and one at Kuwait. Iran fired as many as five missiles on a single day, and once fired three missiles within 30 minutes. This still, however, worked out to an average of only about one missile a day, and Iran was down to only 10-20 Scuds when the war of the cities ended. o Iran's missile attacks were initially more effective than Iraq's attacks. This was largely a matter of geography. Many of Iraq's major cities were comparatively close to its border with Iran, but Tehran and most of Iran's major cities that had not already been targets in the war were outside the range of Iraqi Scud attacks.

The Conference’s deliberations reflected the major issues and dilemmas on Israel’s national agenda in the fields of foreign policy, defense, economics, social policy, governance and Jewish peoplehood. The Conference took place during the period prior to the general elections. The traditional Herzliya Address was delivered by Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and he, like the other prime ministerial candidates, highlighted the principles that would govern his policy. The Conference also took place on the eve of the Palestinian elections that won Hamas the majority needed to establish a Hamas government. This development, along with others, led to the assessment that arose from the sessions on national security and foreign policy that 2006 would be a year of significant developments and critical decisions regarding the strategic threats facing Israel – the strengthening of Hamas and the looming confrontation with Iran over its nuclearization. Much of the rest of the Conference was devoted to the key domestic issues in Israel, particularly the maintenance of economic growth, welfare policy and the rule of law in the present political system.
