Beyond rallying As well as the handful of new closed-road rallies, plenty of speed events - sprints and hillclimbs - are cropping up across the country under the same revised legislation. In September, the Watergate Bay Speed Hillclimb in Cornwall ran over two days for a second year. Each day saw 96 cars contest what might well be the most picturesque hillclimb in the country, the route clinging to the north Cornish coast. “The response across social media couldn’t have been more positive,” says deputy event director and safety officer Dave Brenton. “People said it was epic, amazing, unforgettable… Competitors described it as one of the best national events they’ve done this year while spectators enjoyed it just as much. With the help of the local land owner we created new viewing areas, which were received really well. The stunning location on the Cornish coastline helped as well, of course. We also had brilliant support from the community and local businesses. We’ve got a date agreed for 2020 and we’re hoping to make the course even longer next time around.”
