‘The Madehurst Pavilion’

Fundraising for a community/cricket building

The village Madehurst is a West downland village near and with a population of 120, 45 houses, a church and a cricket club. There is however no village/community hall or pub.

The Cricket Club Cricket has been played at Madehurst since 1946 and the cricket club was re-formed in its current guise in 1994. Since then it has grown steadily drawing players and social members from both Madehurst and neighbouring villages attracted by the rare beauty of the ground, the high standard of cricket and the friendly atmosphere. There are adult matches played every Sunday from April to September and there is a playing/social membership of 45.

The Colts section In 2003, a Colts section was created for children from 8 running every Saturday morning throughout the season. This concentrates on teaching the basics, making cricket fun and arranging matches with other clubs. It has been very successful and now has 35 members split into 2 age groups: under 10 and under 12. Already several of the first batch of Colts (now aged 16) are playing for the adult team on Sundays so helping to ensure that cricket continues to be played at Madehurst long into the future.

The need for a new pavilion The previous ‘pavilion’ was a 30 year old portacabin that served the club and village well for many years. However it rotted and became unusable. Given the success of the cricket club and the real need for a village community building, a plan has been devised to raise funds for a new building that will serve multiple purposes. • New larger pavilion for adults and Colts to use throughout the summer at weekends fulfilling all necessary roles: changing, showers and toilets, kitchen, bar and eating area • A centre for all village activities e.g. the Afternoon club (previously WI), the Church (meetings, courses & harvest suppers), mothers and baby club, Horticultural club, whist and bridge club etc

The proposed community building Planning permission has been granted and the fundraising to finance this building has begun in earnest to reach the £120,000 it will cost. There are several initiatives currently underway.

1. Fundraising to local businesses with 3 package options – Gold: £5000 – free use of ground and pavilion (e.g. for corporate cricket match, away day etc) 1 x year for 5 years, name on honours board, – Silver £1000 – free use of ground and pavilion once in the next year, name on honours board, – Bronze £500 – name on honours board. This has already proved quite successful and has raised £30,000 mainly through 5 Gold options being taken up.

2. Events organised by the cricket club - A pop concert and 20/20 weekend organised during the summer, and a bonfire party in the autumn have boosted funds by £8,500.

3. Grant making funds and trusts - Applications are in the process of being made.

4. Some of the work is being undertaken for free by village and cricket club members. Appendix 5

The Madehurst Pavilion

Dear Members

Madehurst Cricket Club has taken the initiative to build a community pavilion to serve the wider community and provide for the needs of Madehurst Cricket Club (weekends April-September).

The need for such a building is supported by the village, and it will address the problems of rural isolation for both the elderly and the young and provide for cricket facilities into the future. There is currently no community building in the village apart from the church, which has no modern facilities.

This application is to fund a shortfall of £35,000 for a timber building that has received planning permission and ground work started at the end of 2010 cricket season.

Funding for this £100,000 project so far has come from personal donations and pledges from local businesses £30,000; cricket club events £9,200; a generous ‘cost plus 10%’ for timber from Covers in Chichester and pledges of work to be undertaken free of charge by members of the village and the Cricket Club estimated £25,000.

Madehurst Church, The Afternoon Club (previously the W.I.) and the Mother and Baby group are all keen to use the facility and even wider use can be envisaged by other educational and social groups bearing in mind that it will be within the National Park.

Madehurst Cricket Club was resurrected in 1994 and since then it has grown steadily, drawing its playing and social membership from both Madehurst and neighbouring villages. They are attracted by the rare beauty of the ground, the friendly atmosphere and the high standard of cricket. There are adult matches played every Sunday from April to September, and a growing and enthusiastic Colts section which is now split in to 2 age groups, which will ensure that cricket is played in Madehurst well into the future.

Yours Sincerely

Annie Simson
